Missed opportunity?
Missed opportunity?
NO..
This is one of the least talented and youthful england sides possibly ever, and they've done wonderfully well.
PROUD.

I don’t think they are mutually exclusive.

Chin up mate. A young side is bound to have some inconsistency.. Even with a 90 minute performance(or 120)Bordeauxclaret wrote:I don’t think they are mutually exclusive.

Experience won the day.
Re: Missed opportunity?
Least talented I agree, weakest group of players on paper we've had in a while but least youthful? not sure how you work that out.

Tunisia. Panama. Belgium. Colombia. Croatia.
Would you put ANY them on a list of the Worlds best 5 teams?

I can see all them proclaiming 'its coming home' are now gonna come out slagging them off.. Likely the same ones pre tournament not giving them a hope.

Top 5?
Not before the world cup you wouldn't
Edit: I'll give you Belgium, but only based on names, not by reputation (as a team)

Apologies. Add sweden to the listJapebe43 wrote:Sweden?
Re: Missed opportunity?
I actually would consider Croatia a top 5 team based on names alone, I don't think you will find a better midfield in the world. Kovacic, Rakitic, Modric and Perisic are all superb and would walk into every World Cup squad.starting_11 wrote:Top 5?

Belgium are about to finish at least 4th. Croatia at least second. And sweden knocked out 2 of the last 3 winners Germany and Italy. And one of the recent finalists Holland. So yeah.starting_11 wrote:Tunisia. Panama. Belgium. Colombia. Croatia.

Re: Missed opportunity?
Thinking about it, who would you consider the top 5? I wouldn't put England in there at all, Croatia potentially. France and Belgium have to be 2 of them, Germany? Brazil? Spain? I think the standard of International football is low right now, Spain, Holland, Italy, Argentina, Portugal, Germany and Brazil have been much better in the past. Croatia and Belgium have their strongest squads in a long time while the rest decline in quality.starting_11 wrote:Bet u wasn't saying that a week ago

Re: Missed opportunity?
I'd have put us in the top 5.
Didn't take account the "Sean dyche" effect of caving into "slightly less than parochial teams" that he seems to be a pro of instilling in the players.
Must "of bin" what Southgate has gotten out of his time at Turf observing Sean

Re: Missed opportunity?
France are as good as any team of any generation.
Kante and Pogba vs Rakitic and Modric. Has there been a final with a midfield battle of that quality before? Not in my memory.
MBappe could be as good as the original Ronaldo.
Lloris is an excellent goalkeeper.
Umtiti and Varane are top drawer.
We are witnessing something special with france's team. Lets just appreciate it.
Germany - said at start always going to fail. Nowhere near enough pace, passion or pride.
Spain - sacked manager on eve of tournament. Again never going to do anything.
Brazil - should have done better. Much better.
Belgium - outstanding eleven who failed to an even better team.
Argentina. No midfield and no defence.
Croatia - as always showed what individual genius coupled with pride, passion amd belief can achieve. Ironically of all the teams this is the one we should aim to emulate.

Re: Missed opportunity?
Why did we drop so deep, particularly in the first half when under no particular pressure to do so? Was it a management decision? It seemed to me that we thought it a good idea to draw them on to us and hit them with long balls...didn't work.
1-7 on shots wasn't it? You get what you deserve.
Still I think that over all we've exceded expectations.

Re: Missed opportunity?
It was an opportunity to get a final under our belts. I think either France and Belgium would have torn us apart.
What is clear to me, is that refusing to let the opposition get into your heads during a game is vital to this squads development. That squad was always most solid tearassing at the opposition, with a solid back foundation and more than a threat from set piece.
I think at time far too much emphasis has been given to containment when making the opposition panic was the way to go.

Re: Missed opportunity?
I think we were good at set pieces but think only got 3 goals from outfield play and one was a fluke deflection. In the final analysis we did better than most of us thought but failing to do better in open play cost us a final game against the the French

Re: Missed opportunity?
In the main we did. Remember the World Cup lasts the best part of two years including qualifying and is competed for by over a hundred countries . At 7pm last night all but two of those countries would have swapped places with us.starting_11 wrote:NO, just expected us to "margially" beat those we played
F you think Sean Dyche and Gareth Southgate are under achievers in their field you must be an extremely rich successful powerful person in your profession.
