Still going with a Gouldman-centred line-up. Yes, clearly it would be better if Eric Stewart was involved but it's still a great night out.

Missed a chance to see gouldman locally last year.. Didn't realise who he was at the time..

OK.. Maybe they aren't that good.. I think some I've heard is OK.. I thought they were likely southerners..

I think most of us just laugh at them these days.

Doubt we'll be seeing them at Burnley mechanics then..

They did some good pop tunes. Their "very best of" album is worth listening to every couple of years for a breezy singalong hour+ (Donna, Rubber Bullets, Wall Street Shuffle, Life is a Minestrone, I'm not in Love etc etc).
Not a band Ive ever gone to see (or ever would go to see) though.
They're coming to my local 1000+ venue in October & probably will pretty much sell out @ £38+ per ticket- so there are plenty who dont agree with me re watching live.

I saw them in Preston in the 80s and it was a great do - the Things we do for Love is one of the top pop songs of all time.
My first concert, a few weeks earlier, Saxon at King Georges Hall was brilliant, but the girls in skoo didn't want to go.
So 10cc was better...

Saw them live. I thought they were very good. Gouldman has penned some good songs for other artists too, notably, the Hollies.

Their catalogue is much stronger than just the singles. The tour where they do 'Sheet Music' in full (maybe they're still on that) proves that.

Originally called themselves Hotlegs and released Neanderthal Man which strangely became a hit in 1970 in various countries as the track was intentionally a play around with drum layering. Changed their name to 10cc in 1972.

I'd never heard this song, 'Wings', which apparently was influenced by Buffalo Springfield's 'Expecting to Fly'. Of course Graham Nash later went off to join Stephen Stills from that band, and Dave Crosby, and later Neil Young who wrote and sang that song.

It would have been interesting if Nash had stayed with The Hollies and had had more influence on their direction.

A couple of them were in the Mindbenders, Wayne Fontanas backing band. Who were regulars at the Astoria in the 60s. Still don’t get the local link, they were a Manchester band to me and I hope you are not calling that local.

Think local means Nelson..still play 'expecting to fly' haunting sound.not long enough though!

Unlike the Hollies, three of whom ( Tony Hicks, Bernie Calvert and Bobbie Elliot) were local boys from the Nelson area, none of 10 cc were local. They all came from the Prestwich and Droylesdon areas of Manchester. One of them, Eric Stewart did form the Mindbenders together with Rick Rothwell on drums and Bob Lang on bass: I knew them slightly in the 60s, having played on the same bills as them. The three Hollies local boys played in a band called Rick Shaw and the Dolphins, whom I was saw live in Barnoldswick, supporting Joe Brown and the Bruvvers: this would have been about 1960/61.

Barnoldswick has changed a bit since then...not as much dog sh!t about I believe.

Personally I consider the Manchester area local when compared with coming from down south..

Correct Vino. I was at school with Tony Hicks, though he is 3 years older. Bernie and Bobby were not original members but replaced Eric Haydock and Don Rathbone respectively. The former due to family commitments and the latter because Rathbone's playing was thought to be limited. Bobby provided both power and flair. As a drummer, Bobby was my biggest influence. I couldn't play like Jon Bonham but could copy Bobby's licks and fills.

Stockport. Basically owned Strawberry Studios there. Very inventive and original, if you want a good listen try the album The Original Soundtrack, a great mix of intelligent pop and more experimental stuff.

Saw Supertramp on the COTS tour - amazing band live. The title track is still haunting to this day.

As a little aside their support that night was a then unknown Joan Armatrading and the Movies - I was amazed at liking an unknown so much. She actually went off-stage at one point and left her band to play for a while without her, they were unbelievable musicians.

What about Graham Nash who left the Hollies and was part of Crosby, Stills and Nash

Back in the mid to late 70's my aunt was a 'live-in' nanny to Graham Goldman's son, Louie. They lived in Norden. She had no idea who they were to begin with and just informed us she was looking after 'one of those pop singers' children. She turned down the chance to tour the USA with them preferring to stay in Norden and look after Louie. All of the band found her dry wit amusing especially when she apparently constantly urged Lol Creme to get his hair cut and for Kevin Godley to 'get rid of that beard'. Got tickets from them for their concert at Belle Vue in 1977, sitting amongst their families and friends which we thoroughly enjoyed. Very pleasant, down to earth people and Graham Gouldman especially was politeness personified. My aunt didn't attend the concert; too much long hair,beards and 'noisy guitars' for her. Sometimes wonder whether his son,Louie, got involved with music in any capacity. Anyone heard of him?
