West Ham's spending

Post by ecc » Sun Jul 15, 2018 11:10 am

The Seedy Ones are splashing the lolly.

£41m on Felipe Anderson
£22m on Diop
£18m on Yarmolenko
£7m on Fabianski
£3m on Balbuena

And Wilshere will have a nice signing-on fee.

Fabianski is a good signing. Felipe Anderson looked good at Lazio but that's a lot of money. Yarmolenko is a real gamble. Dortmund got rid (at a loss) after just one season.

The eel-eaters will be invading the tax payers' turf come September if they're not winning.

Penny for David Moyes thoughts!

Didn't they have an 18m profit in the January window?

They’re spending it because the fans kicked off last season.

Also with very little if any running costs, they have it to spend.

Can see it going one way or the other.

They’ll have a season like us last year or be in relegation trouble. Hopefully the latter.

You'd think that they'll be letting a few go. I guess Hart & Collins will be off the payroll but they need to get rid of 3/4 more (and maybe recoup a few £mill in the process).
Antonio is the favourite but Kayoute got a lot of criticism last year as well. (I see they have Carroll injured already & out for a couple of months).
Like a fair few on here, I hope they are fighting in the "relegation zone" come next spring.

I was just about to make a thread on this. How can they afford to spend those obscene amounts? They were in the Championship not so long ago and could quite easily have gone back a few times since. I hope they go the way of QPR

Transfer fees are spread over length of contract, so 3 to 4 years in most cases.

If they made a profit last year on transfers and keep getting premier league money, then it would be easy to finance these deals.

Wage bills Vs money coming in is where clubs come unstuck. But West Ham should be raking it in at the new stadium.

As quickenthetempo stated, the fees will not be lump sums, rather spread over the contract (like we do). Also, their owners have a lot to spend and they’ve faced a backlash over the lack of spending. Fees aren’t the worry - it’s the wages. Javier Hernandez, who spent last season mostly on the bench, is on £140k a week.

None of those names look like they will rip up the PL and not sure they will help make a team. Add Dawson at £20 million plus £75k a week wages and it could go horriblly wrong for the porn barons and that mutton Brady.

See, pitch invasions DO work.

Those Rovers gaylords could only muster up the occasional chicken thrown on the pitch and graffitied Staffie and that’s why nowt changed.

They made £43m last season, but £28.4m of that was from player sales and £8.7m was from the sale of their ground. So they actually made about £6m from general operations. If you take into account their ongoing debts and substantial wage bill they aren't as rich as many people think.

https://www.whufc.com/news/club-account ... or-2016-17" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The link to their actual accounts is at the bottom, although they are nowhere near as transparent and user friendly as our own accounting statements.

In addition to the current round of spending they also have a £30m short term loan to pay back at the end of July and the terms for offshore loans have been changed recently. They also have the backwash transfer payments from previous windows to cover.

It's rumoured that they are spending in response to fan pressure, but I'm guessing the primary reason for their lavish spending is that Gold and Sullivan are putting a risky exit strategy in place.

It wasn't too long ago that Gold and Sullivan owned Birmingham City. The fans kicked off, although not to the extent that the West Ham ruffians have, and after voicing their displeasure they quickly sold off their interest in the club. I think the same thing could have crossed their mind in response to the abuse and coin tossing of the West Ham fans.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... ghamcityfc" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Unfortunately, after dancing around the relegation zone, difficulties over the stadium, scenes of near rioting from fans and broadcast abuse of their owners (in tandem with our glorious 3-0 victory, well behaved fans and exemplary conduct from our players) they can't have looked like an attractive investment.

Buy this club and you too could experience these results, these problems and this level of abuse.

So I'm guessing they have gambled and spent big to secure a position further up the table which will appease the fans, settle the unrest and make the club more attractive. They will then look towards selling the club and moving on after the penalty payment clause attached to the stadium expires in 2021.

Fatten the cow, leave on a high, dump the stress and make a very big profit.

If it all goes tits up the fans can't really complain because Gold and Sullivan have done exactly what the fans have asked them to do, spend every penny they have (and possibly don't have) in the pursuit of match day success.

Tend to agree that the owners are throwing everything at success this season in a bid to appease the fans and then probably put the club on the market. They are a so different to us in every respect and two figures stand out on the P/L account. Income is £183m (Burnley £121m) and Wage bill is £95m (Burnley £61m).

As regards the Income difference, they are light years ahead of us in terms of Matchday Income, catering, retail and other commercial activities. Their figure is a whopping £64m compared to our £16m, so a lot of catching up for us to do in terms of sponsorship etc.

However, in the financial year just ended our Broadcast Income will exceed theirs based on our improved league position compared to them.

They finished 7th in '15/'16 but it hardly improved stability at the club.

You can't buy a team, it takes time.
They can splash the cash, but unless success is instant it will all unravel. Just as it always does with West Ham.

Just been announced that almost half a million pounds of tax payers money has been spent on two marketing companies in a failed attempt to get a sponsor and naming rights for the London Stadium. Apparently there might be some sort of investigation.

Managers pay is nothing compared with the players fees etc, I think Mourinho is on around £13M a year.

Really irritated me last season when their fans were kicking off over lack of spending despite 140k wages for Hernandez, 25m for Arnautovic etc. Would give me great pleasure to see them flop again this time, I give it until October until they’re crying for more spending.

Apparently, if London Legacy manage to find a naming sponsor for London Stadium half the money goes to WHU after the first £4 million to the stadium owners. So, far £450,000 has been spent to find a sponsor - all at taxpayers expense - and no one has signed up.

Because their spending is enabled by getting a spanking new stadium for free, and they are bunch of jumped up East End wide boys,FGS look at their pin-up boy Danny Dyer says it all.

I know it used to be a (sort of) joke on here (well on CM actually) when someone at the club (I think, or was it an urban legend?) - Edmundson (?) - spoke about the "Five-Year Plan", well West Ham could do with one. Or even a "Five-Minute Plan", come to that. If the DBs do actually have a business plan it's hard to make it out. Regular changes of manager, scattergun recruitment and with "fan alienation" seemingly their core business (oh and ripping off taxpayers).

They are really pushing the boat out this time but I doubt it will work.
