Well, even amongst the more reasoned posts against Clucas (and they do exist I agree, and they're not really where I'm directing my complaint) I've not seen anyone make a credible case for why 4 midfielders is sufficient, given we often play with a midfield 3. You can make a decent argument it is more of a priority than centre forward, where we have 4 for a maximum of 2 positions at present, 3 of whom have decent Premier League goalscoring records.Duffer_ wrote:There have been many reasonable posts expressing concerns that we are paying too much for a squad player. We don't have infinite resources so it reduces our ability to improve the first team where we need it most, i.e. centre back and a different option up top.
Caricature, hyperbole and reductionism don't suit you Spice.

But irrelevant of that, the point once again is that none of us have an idea of what the overall plan in terms of targets is, or what the overall budget is. That's really up to Dyche. If he thinks he needs a midfielder, he needs a midfielder. And once you've reached that point, all that's left is that he's a bit expensive for a squad player. Which given that £12 million is not especially expensive these days for a midfielder who has played 50 top flight games and done well enough at one point to be linked with an England call up, pretty much translates to he's a bit good for a squad player. Which is in stark contrast from the complaint last season.
Nothing wrong with fans wanting to be excited and having their pulses set racing. But the problem is when folk become blinded by that and appear to want that to be a greater priority than maintaining the success we've had in recent years by signing the sorts of players who have given us that success.Paddy1882 wrote: The managers job is to win football matches which is easier to do with reliable players and a solid formation E.G big Sam and obviously the gaffer has done a great job, but as a fan what’s wrong with wanting to be excited? I’d be very very surprised if signing Sam Clucas gets many pulses racing.
