What do we want to achieve next season?

Post by Mala591 » Wed Jul 18, 2018 9:57 am

1. Top ten PL finish
2. Europa League quarter final
3. Play more exciting and entertaining football and score more goals

SD's reply might be

Ok. Then I want/need player A @ £20 million, player B @ £15 million and player C @ £10 million.

So, our 'business plan' for next season is sorted. Let's get on with it...

I suspect the management team and board are beyond that point.

The Chairman has already said that Premiership survival is the most important target. Whilst we stay in the Premier League, the club will continue to grow. The big challenge is how we would deal with relegation. I could say the same for about 12 other clubs in this league

A full house against Aberdeen.

One game at a time an all that.

Buy your bloody tickets.

Top 10 in PL would be great, but it's going to be interesting to see what happen. Really hoping there are some moves in the transfer market soon or I think we will struggle.

Agree with Lancaster, 17th or above will be fantastic. If we have a bit of a run in Europe, that would be great, if we don't, so be it.

Survival, no serious long-term injuries and any decent cup run. The first two will do at a pinch.

Definitely to stay in the division again and continue to build. Anything beyond that is a bonus. I would be delighted with a top half finish but it won't be easy.

The Premier League, FA Cup and Europa Cup treble winners.

And if we don't achieve it, I will scream and scream until I'm sick.

7th-12th in the Premier League (can`t quite believe what I`m typing!!! :D )
A non-embarrassing exit from the FA Cup.
An enjoyable Europa League Experience somewhere other than Scotland.
A few more goals at home against the `lesser lights`
Excellent streams with non-annoying commentators.

Good point regarding dealing with relegation and I hope it's something we can avoid, at least for a while.
Equally, though, dealing with remaining in the Premier league is also a massive challenge for a club of our stature. Our inability, so far, to land our targets suggests that acquiring the 'right player' is not going to get any easier in the future. Finishing 7th and the 'lure' of European football, we thought, would improve our chances of recruitment but it doesn't appear to be the case so far. It really is a monster that's been created and requires constant feeding. Can we realistically continue to feed it less and not expect it to devour us?

Very nicely put, Silky, and some very interesting points. I'm not sure where we are with our "targets", I'll leave that to Mr. Dyche, but much of our future will hinge on how shrewd we are financially. There's no doubt PL and cup success is a wonderful thing but at what cost ?

Mid-table league placing.
I hope but doubt we will give the league cup more of a go,we don't enter till round 3 so only need 3 wins to reach the semi-final,this is a competition that any of the sides outwith the top six have a shot at winning.
Europa-tough to say how much priority this has,it would be great to be in Europe beyond Christmas though.
FA Cup-will depend on the draw and where we sit in the Premier League and other comps.

I'd be happy with a bottom half finish and some good cup runs, particularly in the Europa. I'll be really disappointed if we don't even make it to the group stage.

1. Midtable finish

Not asking for 7th again, but I think with our experience and resources we should certainly be aiming for better than "just surviving". 10th give or take a couple of places.

2. Europa League Last 16

In other words I want us to take the competition seriously. That means not playing a Walters-Wells strike partnership with Kevin Long launching it up to them.

In order to do that we need to add creativity to the team. Our defence put us in 7th last season, but we still scored less goals than we played games. Agree with the OP that it would take a £20m player. And yes, we can afford that.

EDIT: Yeah, also not getting knocked out by a team many divisions below us in the domestic cups, that would be nice...

I think what he means is stay in the PL to keep the bank balance growing though for what at the moment I don't know. We had a positive balance on players in/out last season and we have just made another wedge last season. I think the 'business' mentality has overtaken the football club mentality. I'm sure it is always well intentioned and I wouldn't swap our board and certainly not our manager, but the 'baby steps to growth' has turned into something of an obsession. There is no trophy for the richest cash positive club in the country as far as I know.

At last, a post with some level of ambition other than the old 'staying in the PL' or '17th'.
I think we should embrace the Europa league with open arms and try to win the damn thing. Play our strongest possible team in every game, in EVERY cup competition and actually have the ambition to WIN something. We're not going to win the PL so concentrate on that which we at least have a chance at.

It’s not small time mentality, it’s realism. Of course we could win the Europa League, in the same way that we could win the Premker Leaghe. But the chances of either happening are very small. We have a better chance of winning the FA cup than either but I wouldn’t prioritise that tournament above the league at the beginning of the season.

As always, it’s a balancing act. We should play a strong team in the Europa League, and I’m sure we will. But we shouldn’t compete in that tournament to the detriment of our league performance. As much as we should aim to win things we are unlikely to win anything at this level so we should aim to do as well in each tournament collectively as we can.

For example, we could have got a round further in each of the League Cup and FA cup last season by playing a stronger side but finished 1 place lower in the league and not qualified for Europe. Would that have been a bigger achievement?

Six teams are guaranteed to stay in the prem every season. Other 14 are in a relegation struggle from the start.

Last year three established premier league teams went down.

Every year our aim is survival, because we need the prem TV money to compete.

I honestly cannot see how this isn't ridiculously obvious to every Burnley fan.

Of course Premier League survival should be our number one aim,but if we aren't going to treat these competitions with some respect, what is the point of earning the right to compete in them,i can understand the League Cup being at the back of the queue, but surely the Europa League, should we advance a good stage into the later rounds, will raise the profile of the club and also the town.

Now if we have a poor start to the Premier League campaign, say we are in the bottom 4/5 come October/November time then we may have to reconsider the eleven we play in Europe,if we are still active in the tournament by then,it's entirely plausible we could be knocked out of all the cup competitions in the opening round we play, and still be relegated, there are no guarantees.

I suspect if we were to lose against Aberdeen then another PL season is pretty much assured with our current squad.

To beat Blackburn again in a cup tie. Then all will be fine. As long as we stay in the Premier League.

Feels like a big underestimation of the challenges of the PL. There are multiple examples of where a team's fortunes change completely from one season to the next.

Why not? Most of the clubs in it are of a similar level to us or worse. Yes some are bigger but hey ho, let's give it a go and not field weakened sides.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Sevilla, Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen, Leipzig, Marseille, Villarreal, Fiorentina, Real Betis, not to mention all the clubs that drop in from the Champions League group stages.

Our chances of winning it are close to zero.

The real fear would be Arsenal or Chelsea. Lazio are a big club of course but some you mention have only finished at similar levels to us in leagues that, if you believe the hype, are inferior to the PL. In Italian terms Fiorentina are probably the same as Leicester these days. Similarly Betis, Villareal, and Leipzig are not considered to be major clubs in their own countries.

Look I'm not saying we will win it but with strongest teams out we can give it a go, we have to get past this 'we are not worthy' thinking or we have gone as far as we will ever go. Look bravely up not fearfully down.

It's not fear it's realism. I'm not saying we shouldn't give it a go, I'm saying that even if we do we've got very little chance of winning it.

All of those clubs mentioned have plenty of experience of European football, we have none.

Europa League is a cup competition. Which means if we take it seriously (which I expect), the aim is to win every tie. Regardless of opposition.
