The National Lottery
The National Lottery
Does anybody do it ?
I have a little flutter every now and then, as I'm sure we all like to dream about hitting the big one.
I know there is little chance of winning anything other than a fiver ! But when doing a lucky dip and nos.1 & 59 come up not a prayer of anything, I'm sure Camelot give you them nos. on purpose.
Why can't they give me the right nos.for a change.

If you buy your ticket from a shop, there's more chance of you dying on your way there, than there is of winning.

You do realise that the numbers 1 and 59 have the same chance of being drawn as all the others, don't you?

I used to do the Lottery fairly regularly, began losing interest and hope and packed in completely when they started fannying around with the format.

When it was first launched, back in the '90s, it may well have been Private Eye that described it as a Tax on the Poor, the Stupid, and the Hopelessly Optimistic.
Re: The National Lottery
And there's me thinking all the other nos.had a better chance of coming in than 1 & 59.!
Yes you're right Tall Paul definitely a mugs game and me being a mug will keep on dreaming.

Did you know the most commonly chosen 6 numbers are 1,2,3,4,5,6 - if these numbers ever came up (just as likely as any other 6) there would be thousands sharing the dosh....... Re: The National Lottery
I jacked in when they doubled the price of a ticket. We also ran a syndicate and jacked that too. A couple of quid a week, fair enough, but £4.00 a week - £16.00 a month, no thanks.

Yep. There's things you can to give yourself a greater chance of winning more money (bigger share), if your numbers do come up.Sutton-Claret wrote:Did you know the most commonly chosen 6 numbers are 1,2,3,4,5,6 - if these numbers ever came up (just as likely as any other 6) there would be thousands sharing the dosh....... Avoiding 1-31, as people select them due to the date of their birthday, and/or the month. Although, if you do, select 13 - a lot avoid due to it being 'unlucky'.

I was in a syndicate at work nearly 20 years. One of the bloke's who was in it was a complete bellend; he'd go mad if we ever did a lucky dip (he was convinced that there was less chance of winning with a lucky dip).
If we ever really wanted to wind him up we'd copy his numbers for our lines - he couldn't follow the logic that if his numbers won, we'd win two or three times!

Surely if you picked the same numbers on multiple tickets you’re reducing your chances of winning?TheFamilyCat wrote:I was in a syndicate at work nearly 20 years. Yep. You'd increase your share %, but taking into account the number of people who also get the same numbers, which is normally low, I doubt the numbers stack up for it to be worth duplicating the same lines.Rileybobs wrote:Surely if you picked the same numbers on multiple tickets you’re reducing your chances of winning?

Re: The National Lottery
Yeah, but like I said, we did it to wind him up. Our "reasoning" was that by copying his numbers, which he thought had more chance of winning than a lucky dip, instead of doing a lucky dip we would win and win multiple times.Rileybobs wrote:Surely if you picked the same numbers on multiple tickets you’re reducing your chances of winning?
He was a bellend and it wound him up so I always thought it was a pound well spent.

Re: The National Lottery
Mates mum lives in Largs where that couple won £150 million.
They put some money into things for the town, looked after friends and family etc and shop in the same places.
They also read every begging letter they get, and they used to get a lot and decide which they want to donate too.
They've also had grief in Largs for splashing the cash and grief from others for not splashing enough of it.

Best to do that sort of thing anonymously. Only last week I donated to charity and I didn't tell a soul and I certainly wouldn't publicise my act of kindness on a local forum.

Same here, too many draws now & price increase. Lots of people lost interest, still get the occasion scratch card when I'm flush.evensteadiereddie wrote:I used to do the Lottery fairly regularly, began losing interest and hope and packed in completely when they started fannying around with the format.

I used to do it regularly also, but there is too many numbers now they have increased to 59,and the prizes are too confusing.evensteadiereddie wrote:I used to do the Lottery fairly regularly, began losing interest and hope and packed in completely when they started fannying around with the format.
I got excited one week as i had the first 4 numbers drawn, but no more after that,i don't think it was a lot for 4 that week either, about 20 quid or so.

Re: The National Lottery
I’ve never understood the multitudes of people who get excited and only buy a ticket when there is a big rollover.
I’ve always thought that people like that must think it’s not worth me walking 250 yards to the Newsagents for £3million but it’s definitely worth it for £18million.

Re: The National Lottery
I still do it. When my 2 kids were little (in their 30s now) and the lottery just started, we picked a line of numbers each and I did them every draw. I'd previously done "the pools" so basically just switched what I was spending on that.
When the price moved £1 to £2 I stopped doing "my" line but I just daren't drop the other 2 lines as, clearly, they would come up bigtime if I did.
We've had a few wins but I'm £thousands down overall & "the pools" was a more participative type of gamble.

A mate of mine won £2.2m about 7 years ago.

Re: The National Lottery
eventually someone has to win big, people can decide what is big to them and whether they have the odd two pounds to send.
I do it for 4 weeks at atime usually Euro Tuesday/Friday, but I go weeks without checking, even whenI got mail from them telling me it's good news, that way I dream a little longer after there mail Biggest win yet 10.70 in years and years, but as said before I just know if I stop my numbers will come out of the hat.

That way, you won't know if your numbers will have come out or not if you happen to see the results when you haven't entered.

Re: The National Lottery
Friends of my parents won we think 5-6m about 10 years ago. The wife used to run a syndicate at work plus they did their own numbers too. It was their own ticket that won and out caused no end of problems for her, work colleagues accusing her of fraud and even calling in the Police. After a brief investigation they found no wrong doing.
A lot of people she worked with for years and called friends turned on her. I guess they found out who their real friends were after that. Still the same couple, just have a nicer house, car and stuff but remain friends with my parents.
