Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Solid performance. Aberdeen clearly fitter as expected. Phantom penalty though. Hope Pope is ok.
Watched tonight and went to Macc. Everything is ok in terms of fitness and performance. BUT
Tarky- looks to be struggling post his op
Wood - has been shocking in both games. A real worry
Pope N/A
Lowton 6 - crossing poor
Tarkowski 5 - looks v rusty
Mee 5 - not up to his usual standard
Ward 6 - ok
JBG 6 - looks a threat
Cork 6 - ok
Westwood 6 - solid as per
Hendrick 5 - really struggling to see what he offers against teams who sit back. This is the key area that we need to strengthen
Wood 4- needs to shape up
Overall happy. Let’s stuff them next week
Lindergaard 6
Vokes 7*
Should have brought Sam on at half time

Looked very exposed at the back a few times tonight.
Doesn't bear thinking about what a more clinical side could have done.
Well short of ideas going forward.
But we dug in, earned a respectable draw against a tough, up for it side.
Early days. Good work out though.
Said on the match thread, the physio will be easier his/her crust this week.
After 51 years away, happy with 1-1.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
All 5 except Lindegard and Vokes who I’d give an 8
Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Lindergaard 7 - not a foot wrong.
Lowton 5 - crossing was so poor
Tark 3 - All over the place
Mee 3 - All over the place
Ward 6 - probably the less clumsy of the back 4 tonight.
JBG 7 - thought he had a good game 2nd half, picked up some nice positions.
Lennon 7 - good first half, made some nice runs with good end product.
Cork 6 - battled for every ball, worked hard, unlucky not to score.
Westwood 5 - tried to find killer balls forward but just didn't work for him tonight, I like to see him trying forward balls though.
Hendrick 5 - didn't do much at all, left Wood isolated by dropping so deep to get on the ball, neat and tidy on the ball though, i'd much rather see him deeper.
Wood 4 - given absolutely no service at all, isolated for the first half and little to attack in the 2nd.
Overall a typical Dyche performance in the Cup, expected to win, given all the possession, a lot of huff but no puff. We should never find our striker isolated and lacking service against Aberdeen when they're allowing us possession. Really really poor.

Lindegaard - 7 was worried when Pope went off but seemed okay.
Lowton - 7 decent
Tarkowski - 6 mistakes. Not penalising him for the non foul penalty.
Mee - 6 again made mistakes and wasn't dominant in the air
Ward - 6 quiet in second half. Where did he go?
Gudmundsson - 7
Cork - 7
Westwood - 6
Hendrick - 5
Lennon - 7* full of energy. Faded a bit.
Wood - 5
Vokes - 7

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope N/A
Lowton 5 - crossing awful
Tarkowski 4 - looked really shaky but got no protection from the referee who decided to just let Cosgrove consistently foul
Mee 5 - looked shaky on Monday v Preston...bit better tonight.
Ward 4 - crossing awful
JBG 7 (MOM) - our best player tonight
Cork 5 - just needs to get sharper
Westwood 4 - some nice passing but got caught 2 or 3 times which is exactly what happened v Preston
Lennon 6 - played well and looked lively
Hendrick 4 - gave away ball too often
Wood 4 - played poorly until Sam came on and then improved
Lindergaard 6 - did well.
Vokes 7 - we played much better when Sam came on and great finish for goal.
We did not look any fitter tonight than we would at this time for a normal season which with Aberdeen a couple of weeks ahead of us in training showed in the game.
We were still the better team. They were physical and dirty. They should have had at least one red card.
The penalty was pathetic - disgrace of a decision.
Hope Nick Pope is ok.
Hope we thump the dirty Scottish bas-tards next week and they go back playing in their sh-ite tinpot of a Sunday League.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
It's a cup-tie did you just expect Aberdeen to roll over,of course they tried to make it a battle,we lacked the urgency required in the first half, don't know what Sean said at H/T,but we rolled our sleeves up and deserved the equaliser in the end.
I would make the Clarets slight favourites at t'turf, but we'll need to cut out those sloppy defensive errors, could have proved costly against a more ruthless side.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Watched it in the Lounge Bar in Benalmadena with plenty of holidaying Clarets and local Clarets. I honestly thought we were he better footballing team by far, but far from up to speed. For the life in me, I can not understand why we still persist playing Hendrick out of position in this so-called number ten role. It didn't work well last season and I would be disappointed to see it taken into the new season. Also, thought Tarks had a poor game, giving away too many silly fouls, he needs to get back to basics.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope 5. Much like Heatons injury last year it was Popes own mistake and clumsiness that led to the injury.
Lowton 6. Got forward well but didnt cross as well.
Ward 5.
Tarkowski 3. He was absolutely abysmal. His distribution was terrible. Constantly trying the holywood ball (to no avail) when a simple pass was on.
Mee 3. See above less the the hollywood balls.
Jbg 6. Tried.
Lennon 7. Was constantly in good positions and in space but too often nobody played him in. Tried hard. Made some decent chances when he had it.
Cork 5
Westwood 5
Hendrick 5 - yet more proof we need a proper number 10 (not his fault btw)
Wood 3. Anonymous. And on the rare occasion he got it he instantly lost it.
Vokes 8 as is often the case madea real difference and scored a vital goal. How Hendrick started ahead of him up top is beyond me

I think Ben needs to wake up and smell the coffee if he thinks he's going to hit pay dirt anytime soon.
Pre season or not, that was poor........if I were him I'd get my pen out before the club have a re think.
He's a good lad for sure..and a real warrior...but in ability terms he's a long long way from top 6.

A word on Pope. Not convinced he was ready for the game mentally given he had been back for 2 days. I don’t think the injury happens if he’s at his usual level of sharpness and he looks like he will be out for a good stint. Bad decision to start with him imo

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
How many of you actually watched the game before giving those marks.
We were away from home in Europe in the first competition of the year.
We dominated the game passed the ball really well
Yes up front we were a bit static and the service was poor to wood
Vokes took his goal really well.
We lost Pope early and readjusted very well with Lindegaard making a brilliant save and looked composed through out.
What exactly are you expecting this early in the season.
And we have 4/5 first team players out.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
I think you are a bit blinded by the late equaliser Blyclaret. Until that goal it was a terrible night all round. We are not allowed to panic because the "serious" stuff starts in just over two weeks but to me last night WAS serious stuff and we were seriously undercooked and far too many players were no more than 4's. We barely won a ball in any area of the park in the first half. In the second we passed the ball about without creating much apart from Corks near miss and Vokes creating his own chance!Blyclaret wrote:How many of you actually watched the game before giving those marks.

Lindegaard 7 - Not a huge amount to do but his composure in difficult circumstances was admirable
Lowton - 5 woeful crossing but at least competed
Tark & Mee - 4's - Deary me.
Ward - 5 Bit anonymous and found myself wishing for Charlie Taylor to be in there as an attacking threat
Cork - 4 Looking like the player Swansea sold
Westwood 4 Looking like the player Villa fans told us he was
JBG - 6 Huffed & Puffed and one of the better players on the night but still disappointing
Lennon 6 Also huffed and puffed but end product not great but admittedely with little to aim for
Hendrick 5 We got our wish for him to play deeper but of course that left Wood isolated and what he did do was not overly impressive but better than Cork & Westwood
Wood 4 Game plan didnt and doesnt suit him but barely put a foot right.
Vokes 7 MOM Turned my evening round big style. Thanks Sam.
The "premier League you are having a laff" chant was bang on the money for the bulk of the game and I would have been fuming if we had not got a goal as we would have been facing a humuliating exit from a competition we have been incredibly proud to get in to on the back of for me poor preparation. We didnt cover ourselves in glory at all in our trip to Scotland apart from the fans but Sam has given us a better than even chance of getting to Istanbul. Play like that again though and you can put your passports away. Hopefully Garlick will pull his finger out and get some quality recruitements in.
Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Your in for a long season Woody if you react like that to the first competitive game.
Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
I know what you mean Blyclarets but I'm a bit miffed we didnt prepare as if this WAS the start to our season and personally dont feel why we should cut them any slack. Add to that the fact that the thin squad that does not look like being added to anytime soon and yes it could be a long season. Could all change very quickly of course but I am reacting to what I saw last night and it wasnt great.

As I've said on another thread, you can't play Hendrick and Wood together as they're too powderpuff. Their CB's had the easiest game of their lives until Vokes came on. Wood was particularly poor - he gets +1 for winning the header for Vokes' goal, but other than that he was utterly useless. I hope Barnes is back next week!
The back 4 were all at sea as well which is very unlike them. Ward picked up from where he left off last season; he's not been the same player since his injury last season. I'd like to see Taylor given a shot next week to be honest.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope - N/A - such bad luck for the lad, I hope Dyche is wrong and it proves to be "less serious rather than more".
Lowton - 6 - Got up and down OK, but his delivery was well below his usual high standards.
Ward - 7 - Much like Lowton but with better delivery. One of our best players on the night.
Tarkowski - 5 - Looked a bit off the pace, and (whilst its hard to know how much he was impacted by the lack of movement ahead of him) his passing was awful and put us in harm's way more than once - although it was a peach of a long diagonal for the goal.
Mee - 6 - Generally OK, although his ball-watching nearly cost us when Lindegaard saved 20 minutes from time.
Cork - 6 - Really poor in the first half when we utterly failed to get a toe-hold in midfield, but much better after the break and one of the reasons we largely controlled the second half.
Westwood - 5 - One or two nice, incisive passes, but a lot that were under-hit, forced players to check or simply went to opposition players.
Hendrick - 6 - The pick of the midfield 3 in the first half, with a number of neat, prompting passes - notably to get Ward in at the by-line from which we should have scored.
Lennon - 7 - Very bright and effective in the first half when he had to feed on scraps, and continued to be a threat even after Aberdeen doubled up on him after the break.
JBG - 6 - Another to be well off the pace before the break, but improve after it and he looked much happier once he got a run on his preferred right hand side.
Wood - 4 - Against teams like this when there's no space to run into either behind or down the sides, his all round game leaves a bit to be desired (apart from goals, which is admittedly a big caveat). He doesn't bring the attacking midfielders into the game, and he doesn't really create space for others, nor hold the ball. Our attack lacked a focal point at times last night until Vokes came on.
Lindegaard - 7 - Couldn't really be faulted. Some keepers might have claimed the ball Mee let drop after 70 minutes, but not all would, and it was a good, alert save. Distribution was crisper and more precise than any other Burnley player in the first half, which says something about him and lots about his teammates.
Vokes - 7 - Gave us a focal point, and should have been on earlier (arguably for Wood, rather than alongside Wood).
Care needed in summing up that performance. Particularly in the first 45 minutes, we were the football equivalent of a teenager who has been woken up too early - a bit crotchety, a bit careless, generally sluggish and otherwise unprepared for a game of football that was about 10 days earlier in the year than the players are used to. We were OK when we got ourselves time on the ball but we were too often hustled out of it.
Perhaps that was inevitable given that Aberdeen are much more used to playing in July than we are, but that doesn't completely explain the performance. The 4-5-1/4-3-3 system didn't particularly work because we neither had the midfielder capable of orchestrating the play, nor a forward with the guile and touch to provide a focal point for the midfielders to play off. As a result we had the problem we had at times in the second half of last season - against a defence willing to sit deep, we looked a bit disjointed and stilted. In the end we resolved this by going 4-4-2 and playing a very direct game, which hardly feels like a triumph for the technical superiority of the Premier League.
That suggests a bigger role for Vokes, a desperate need for Defour (on this evidence even if we beat Aberdeen, Besiktas away will be a huge ask if we cannot protect the ball better, and Defour is much better at manipulating it than Westwood, solid citizen though Westwood is) but also a need for reinforcements in the middle of the park - not just for Europe, but for the Premier League too.
But a 1-1 draw isn't a bad result, and its definitely one I'd have taken pre-kick off, so all in all its hardly a bad night's work.

Agree totally with Spice, we seem a long way off from that win against Chelsea in the first game last year, and I don't believe 10 more days training gets us to that point, but more to do with missing players that were in that team. that said we managed to play out the end of last season with this team, so again questions need to be asked. However great to see the Clarets back in action, and a fantastic night to savour.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
More like 2 weeks shy of the Chelsea game though - that was 12 of August. That's the best part of half a pre-season.
The 10 days thing is charitable, its based on the fact most of our lads have played in the Championship when you start a week earlier. Fitness and match-readiness (and the mentality of when players are ready for the season (which is what I likened to an early alarm call) was a huge factor last night - but certainly not the only factor.

Rarely have I been so grateful for the late leveller. Plenty of effort but little sharpness, apart from mainly the guys who had some summer international action (JBG and Sam). Dyche made an error pulling them back only 2 (?) days early despite a game 16 days early. I think he expected an easy draw then we drew Aberdeen.
The defenders struggled at times. Lindegaard giving his captain Mee an absolute dressing down for ball watching was the highlight of the game - says a lot for his confidence, a guy who must have huge splinters in his bum for only playing around 120 games in a 15 year career (file this under “beware of signing for Man Utd”).
Terrible luck for Heaton, then Pope, whose mistake seemed to lead to the injury when he fumbled the ball. In hindsight an error to play a guy after 1 day training.
Aberdeen were plucky, but my heck, their fans have a bigger inferiority complex than I have ever seen. All this 1-0 to the Sunday League stuff. They revel in their misery. A friendly bunch but get some positivity lads!
Btw - heart goes out to those affected by the accident on the A96. May have been locals returning from the game, but whatever, horrendous.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Better team, certainly on the ball but too sloppy at times and very ponderous in the build up (but certainly when we fizzed it about a bit quicker and switched play we looked a lot better) but I said 1-1 before kick off and I'm pleased that we got the away goal. Should have won really, and though Aberdeen absolutely worked their socks off, they wouldn't have scored without some serious help from the ref.
Quick additional point, We needed more players in the box, especially first half when three balls came in and there just wasn't enough in there.
Pope - hope its not as bad as it looks, but looked like what happened to Tom
Lowton 6 - poor delivery to be honest
Tarks 5 - good pass for goal but far too sloppy
Mee 5 - you can't do what he did in the box without being 100% sure the keeper is coming for it
Ward 6 - did well, someone needs to be in the box though when he puts his ball in
JBG 7 - did well I thought
Cork 6 - better second half, but still completely missed a kick which put us in trouble
Westwood 6 - got caught on the ball twice, which if he's going to play there, is going to cost us going on. Has to move it quicker and more accuately
Hendrick 6 - one I had to think about. Thought he wasn't great to be honest at the game, but he did link together well in the first half but he does need to get into the box more
Lennon 7 - did well
Wood 4 - poorest player for us to be fair
Lindegaard 7 - did all you can ask
Vokes 8 - scored a peach and made us into a better side

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
Pope - looked like he's broken something but he'll be out a while
Lowton - 6 works well with both wingers
Tarkowski - 6 a couple of poor choices of pass that put us in danger but otherwise fine. Bizarre decision for the penalty but to book him as well was a travesty, especially as he spent the rest of the 90 mins wi5h cosgrove clattering into him with impunity.
Mee- 6 fine
Ward - 6 also fine, got forward well
Westwood - 7 retained and recycled the ball really well and got us moving across the park.
Cork - 7 similar to westy and denied a goal by a superb save
Lennon - 6 Aberdeen were terrified of him and doubled up throughout. We've got a bit of a problem here as Lennon is clearly better on the right and so is
Gudmundsson - 6 it doesn't quite seem to work for him on the left, can cut in and threatens more on the right.
Hendrick - 6 plays probably the most difficult role in our set up and he didn't do badly at all, a couple of lovely through balls. Better when he drops deeper and doesn't have his back to goal.
Wood - 4 pretty poor overall although he got an assist, no space to run into and didn't gamble in the box enough
Lindegaard - 7 pressure cooker debut for him and he handled it well, albeit he wasn't really tested. A couple of good claims under pressure, a routine save to his left and a very good stop from the header.
Vokes - 7 his goals to mins on the pitch ratio over the last season must be right up there and this goal was one of his best. We looked a lot better when he came on even if we did start going long.
Said elsewhere that in the context of what this game was, a competitive pre-season game, this was a decent performance. As long as we can keep everyone fit it should stand us in very good stead for the season proper.
And as an experience, my first Burnley game in Europe is right up there. Glad it was Aberdeen, a Kazakhstan backwater wouldn't have been quite so fun. Full stadium, two noisy sets of fans, all good natured but passionate. Top drawer.

We rallied in the second-half, albeit briefly; overall we were below par and my ratings reflect that. Vokes scored a wonderful goal and I was really impressed by Lennon tracking back to intercept a pass which might well have led to an Aberdeen goal on the counter. I doubt the lads are 100% fit; if Lowton can defend against Mané, Hazard and Sanchez, then I don't think he's getting done by a change of pace from one of the Dons' wingers. That said, I thought they were good opposition: defended well, were a threat on the counter but just lacked the quality.
Tactics were wrong today in my view, as they have been in the past against lower league sides. We play the underdog role a lot in the league and that means we're physical, niggly and hard to beat. That works for us against Man City when we're outclassed, but doesn't when we are against Aberdeen. Hoofing it up was playing into their hands today, we should have kept it on the ground and let our quality show. I think we might need another technician if Defour is not going to be regularly available.
P.S. ClaretTony, I enjoy doing the player ratings but it would be good if you could just list all the players who played 20 mins or more in the first post: then people could just copy and paste the names and add their ratings.

Re: Aberdeen v Burnley - Player Ratings
It was Aberdeen's first game of the season, they were missing a bunch of their best players from last year and they simply allowed us to ''dominate the game'' on the possession stat, we had alot of possession in the midfield area while Aberdeen dropped off but what did we create? Other than the Cork header I'm struggling to name another shot on goal we had against a League One calibre side.Blyclaret wrote:How many of you actually watched the game before giving those marks.
