Why are you sacking Virgin off out of interest?

I've had them for 10 years or so and never had any issues except intermittent service faults.

It's always interesting to hear other people's experiences with companies.

My service is coming to an end with them in three months so might look elsewhere but as far as I know they are literally the best for Internet.

If you want better service then Talk Talk isn't the way to go.

We've been on cable tv ever since it became available in our area and to be fair we have been quite happy with the service over the years.
The Broadband is top notch so I might keep that.

The main reason we're looking to get shut is the loss of the uktv channels which are available on freeview anyway.

Interested in this thread as we are also considering sacking Virgin off, mainly for cost rather than service reasons though not happy with the loss of the 5 UKTV channels which we actually used to watch!

Now that the discount period has ended we're paying an eye watering £116 a month although we are on the 'XL' package (Sports, Movies etc.) with HD, Multiroom, phone, broadband etc.

Been looking at alternatives like BT, Vodaphone and Now TV and other streaming services and Sky currently have a package with everything we get now except the premium Sports and movie channels and a slower broadband speed (12 meg)for around £50 a month which might suit us.

Going to ring Virgin anyway and see if they will cut us a better deal but in the meantime have ordered an Amazon Fire stick with 30 day free Amazon Prime trial and see what goodies are on there (maybe even try that Kodi thingy I keep hearing/reading about ;)

Check the terms and conditions. See if it's 14 days from when your service starts.

Never mind. It's 20 days.

Edit: Call them and tell them you want to raise a complaint about this policy. Tell them that the only resolution you'll accept is a cancelling of the contract. If they refuse tell them you want to escalate the issue and have them issue you with a Deadlock letter.. Chances are they'll suddenly find that they have no problem with cancelling the contract. If they don't then you'll have cost them money just by their issuing of the deadlock letter and the referral to Ofcom even if Ofcom end up upholding TalkTalk's side of things.

Thanks I T. I didn’t write my full story above.
In the end I said I was happy to go to court and at that point they ‘let me leave’. A truely mind boggling company.

If you like Amazon Prime video you can get that through BT's tv service without the need of the firestick. But you'll probably need fibre broadband to get their TV packages. Likewise with Sky as they're moving towards providing TV through the fibre broadband because their satellites are gonna start falling out of the sky soon, but i don't think their Q boxes have Amazon or Netflix (could be wrong)

I've been with Virgin for a long time. Can't fault the service. I don't think there is a better broadband. Its just the cost. Mine is due for renewal. I'm ringing up tomorrow to see what they can do. Haven't tried the firestick route. Lots seem to use them now and pay a lot less than me. I don't need a landline but they insist you have one and charge a fortune for it. All our friends and relatives call our mobiles. The only people ringing the landlines are cold callers. All we need from Virgin is WiFi and the sports channels.

When it works - great they are good - but their customer service is criminal. Shockingly bad.
The tv add ons are poor in comparison and their billing is often wrong. Trying to sort any issue out is time you will never get back and so frustrating as "help" staff are clueless and send you round and round in loops. I could go on..........

I would not recommend anyone to talk talk for this reason alone.

Avoid

The problem with budget broadband companies like Talk Talk is that the price looks amazing, but they've got to save money somewhere and that's why there are so many people saying to avoid them like the plague. They're not saying that the broadband is spotty or poor quality, that's not the problem with budget providers. The problem with budget providers is that they're saving money on customer service. The premium providers like Virgin and BT will still have their individual horror stories where everything just goes tits up, but they're the exception where as with cheap providers they're much more the rule.

Ironically I'm posting this from a talktalk connection. :p

I've had talk talk fibre broadband for over a year without any problems at all. In fact I recently received a random flyer in the post offering a £5 discount code for new broadband customers on TT. I rang customer services to ask if the code could be used for existing customers. No problem she said and applied it there and then. Guaranteed never to increase prices during your contract too.
Good router , never had a drop out of any significance. Always get what I pay for. I am happy with the service.

I sacked virgin off 18 months ago. Best decision i ever made. To all you who think you are getting value for money install speedtest app on your phone, test your connection in the morning, then in the afternoon when they give you what they say they are giving you then again after 6pm when they slow you down to a ridiculous speed (5mps from 175mps in the day). I only noticed when i tried steaming. Anyway i went with plusnet and it is spot on. Very good price too.

Or    Ringo who passes you on to a version ablue who then passes you to a version of KR... (I could take this further :D ).

TALKTALK Bottom line - do you need the potential hassle?

It's a good service when working which is most of the time - get any issue at all -- expect pain.

You're paying the rent the physical line from the exchange to your home. You don't have to use the telephone or even have one plugged in.

The crazy thing is, I pay 35.99 a month for Broadband and phone line with Virgin, 26 quid of which is the line rental. If I cancelled the phone line, my broadband package would go up....

Used to have the Talk Talk TV package thing but it was crap, Sky Sports came through the internet so was always a bit delayed and would sometimes buffer. Can't fault their Fibre Optic broadband though. Stream 4k content with no problem.
