The Captains Armband
The Captains Armband
With Ben Mee flatly refusing to sign a new deal, should he be stripped of the captaincy?
Should Jack Cork be given the honour or could it be used as a carrot to dangle in front of a potential new signing?

I’m sure Heaton will have something to say about that

Would hope that last night's indifferent performance from Ben Mee was just a blip and not that his mind was on something else.

Re: The Captains Armband
To a certain extent I don't think it matters who the captain is for a Burnley side under Dyche.
Although whilst he is here, Heaton is the main man.

He considers himself a left-hand now.

Re: The Captains Armband
If Ben Mee is flatly refusing to sign a new deal, then that’s hardly the right example to be setting, and captains really should be leading by example. But that’s ‘if’. Don’t suppose any of us REALLY know what’s happening here.
And to be honest, Tom Heaton can say what he likes, the captain should really be in the heart of the team, communicating with all the players. Yeah, I know he was the captain during our promotion season, but we all know who REALLY did the job don’t we.
So in answer to the OP, if Ben wants away, then yes, give it to jack cork. Guaranteed starter if fit, and always puts a shift in. Even tarky might be an option.
I would actually prefer Ben to stay AND be captain, but not at any cost.

Who says he’s refusing?
Could still be negotiating.

Strange one but this year Brentford are not havjng a captain this year as such. Each game the players are going to nominate one another for the role in each game. Bonkers idea

Bobinho, surely you've heard Tom's voice booming across Turf Moor during a game.bobinho wrote:And to be honest, Tom Heaton can say what he likes, the captain should really be in the heart of the team, communicating with all the players. No communication problems with this lad.

As above Heaton is easily our most vocal. I can hear him in the CFS... when he is in front of the jmc!

Re: The Captains Armband
Brentford's manager has refused to name a captain this season - he reckons everyone that goes on the pitch should be a captain and give their all. I agree with him

Re: The Captains Armband
Cork certainly looks like the natural leader in the team.
Injured keepers and "want away" outfielders shouldn't be in the reckoning...only a simpleton (see above) would plump for a captain who wasn't 100% on board.

Until he expresses his desire to leave, I think he should remain captain, he has been a loyal and excellent player for us these past few years.
Re: The Captains Armband
It's quite obvious what he is doing, he's running his contract down which of course is his prerogative.burnleymik wrote:Do we know for sure he is refusing a new deal?.
You crack on then Ben but whilst you're doing it get that armband off, give it to super Jack and take Matty 'Loyal' Lowtons dog for a walk whist he signs autographs for our kids in the Club shop.

Re: The Captains Armband
If you're running your contract down, you're basically saying I want to move to pastures new.
Your performance will be effected as you're thinking about the future, your head and mind is already looking forward.
As with Ings, this often shows in your performance at some point.
For that reason I wouldn't think giving the above person the honour and responsibility of leading a team forward, is the best option.
I'm not saying that the above person is Ben Mee, only Mr Dyche will know if he truely wants to leave.
Captain, on the shirt launches and posters, I'd say he's more likely to sign than not, I just think he wants top whack and 1 last bumper pay day.

Re: The Captains Armband
A captain in football is the most over rated position in sport.
There's not even any real benefit to winning the coin toss.

Maybe for You, I would give my left boll0ck just to captain Burnley for one, one match.Quickenthetempo wrote:A captain in football is the most over rated position in sport.

Re: The Captains Armband
I dont get how players are called disloyal for seeing their contract out.
It's basically the polar opposite of that.
Yet a player who sees their contract out will get slated. (See Ben mee here, Danny Ings before etc) Whereas one who leaves midway through a contract that HE signed will be treat like a hero ( Jay, Trippier).

Ben hasn’t looked himself in both the Aberdeen games IMO. Hopefully just a bit of rustiness and not anything about his future. Captain (if fit) should be Heaton all day for me.

What would you give to just play for Burnley for one match?
Sadly you couldn't be the 'tosser' of the coin with only one testicle.

Running the contract down screws us over.....and they know it.
Re: The Captains Armband
I don't think Mee should be our captain this year. From January he'll be able to talk to other clubs, wouldn't be human if his mind was focused 100% on Burnley.

We will get more than that for Ings! Not to mention 11 years of playing service between him and mee.

Re: The Captains Armband
Absolutely should not be our captain IF he is refusing to sign a new contract. If we have signed Gibson Mee should be our 3rd centre half, why would you play him if he doesn’t want to be here.
Re: The Captains Armband
I agree, if he won't sign and we can get Gibson in let him sit on the bench for a season. We can't afford to have players more concerned with their next move.

Re: The Captains Armband
I love how you assume Mee is 'flatly refusing' to sign a new deal. Maybe Burnley are flatly refusing to negotiate. It happened with Scott Arfield also looks to be happening to Vokes.Diesel wrote:With Ben Mee flatly refusing to sign a new deal, should he be stripped of the captaincy?

I hate this side of football as it just shows both players and clubs lack of Loyalty. Clubs will always look for better options as will players. Playing for the badge and having club hero's is looking to be a thing of the past.
Maybe he won't sign maybe he will. But before we start stripping the captaincy off him maybe we should wait till the start of the season. I still feel from the lack of noise coming from his side there is a deal to be done.
