Back to the subject of players we've been linked with. Rodriguez in the West Brom team today, Gibson not included by Middlesbrough.
Re: ARTICLE: No signings yet but speculation mounting
Gibson 'unsettled' in football parlance. Rodriguez stated he was happy to play and not force a move, so WBA playing chess with Burnley.
Hart not playing anywhere?
Clucas....Claret?

Yes I was at that game and was gobsmacked that Marlon was not there and had been soldClaretTony wrote:Bang on that one - we got to Walsall for the game and saw Chris Woods lining up and were told Marlon had been sold. Strangely, he was playing so poorly at the time, and had cost us the points at Carlisle in the previous game, that Wood coming in helped us to stay up.

Re: ARTICLE: No signings yet but speculation mounting
I'd be ok with Deeney but surely not a five-year deal. Deeney is physically a handful and would be great when Dyche fit, I'd see him as cover for Barnes. Chris Wood is a bit of enigma as he doesn't appear to do a lot but does know where the goal is when he gets a chance. Sam Vokes is a great team player who Dyche gets the best out of. Can't see Rodriguez and Dawson happening now and the board does right to move on. Gibson at £15 Million appears good business given how much we got for Keane last year and the fee being mentioned for Maguire to go to Man U.
Clucas fills the gap left by Scott Arfield. I suspect we saw the best of Scott Arfield at Burnley, but Clucas is an upgrade on Arfield and the kind of transfer that fits with a steady strategic improvement in the squad.
I think there must be more to Tom Heaton fitness than is apparent. But it shows how the club has progressed when a 31 year old ex-England goalkeeper with 75 caps wants to join us. Personally, I think it's a great deal for Joe Hart given our recent track record in developing defenders and goalkeepers. Same for Gibson.
Will there be a signing that's unexpected - a fit Danny Ings would be fabulous. Add to that a fit Defour and Brady, the upcoming Dunne and O'Neil and we don't look too bad. Did we beat Norwich 4 -1 at home to bring to an end a 19 game run without a victory? It's not that long ago, is it? I think we're in for a tough season because of increased expectations after last season and our European adventure, but Istanbul could be tough and then it might be a straightforward 40 points to stay in the Premier League:-) How much would Ralph Coates be worth now, he'd be a good signing.

'a fit Defour'
Is there still one available? I have grave doubts over that.

How would you describe 'any time soon'? I agree with what you are saying but just wondering if your 'soon' is anywhere near my 'soon'.ElectroClaret wrote:Don't think we'll be seeing Defour any time soon .

Substitute soon for again. We need a replacement in January who can play every game.

True Tony, but we are in a precarious position now.
If Hart plays 4 more games it will be way to late to save us from the championship.

Obviously a 4 month old thread but is there any noise about a Deeney move in Jan?
Is there any noise at all for that instance?
Probably warrants its own thread mind

Burnley FC are in talks with a Billionaire Sheikh from the Middle East. They are discussing a Multi Million pound investment to get the club back up the table. Sheikh Anvack has promised to put the freshness back.

Might this be a window that sees some of the squad leaving? Nixon has mentioned a Heaton move to Leeds for the rest of the season but I dare say our current table position might have one or two of the squad thinking ....

Fulham, Cardiff and Leicester interested in Liverpool right back Clyne. Nixon mentioned there is now a 4th club interested and looking the most likely proposition... Us?

He’d be an excellent signing for us.
He came off the bench yesterday though so I’d be surprised if they let him go.

I'd be surprised if we were to get anywhere near Clyne.
But it would be great to think we might at least rival Cardiff.

We could have attracted a wider choice of players had we pulled our finger out in the Summer. Now it will be very difficult to sign improvements.

Absolutely right - we could certainly have considered ourselves a more attractive proposition than the aforementioned Palace, Fulham and maybe even Leicester during the summer. Not any more.Blackrod wrote:We could have attracted a wider choice of players had we pulled our finger out in the Summer. Now it will be very difficult to sign improvements.

Ah, the lure of the Europa League.
That would have counter balanced the above list of paying far more wages than we do.
I keep forgetting that.

Who was in the bottom three in the summer?
Fulham are in London and spent a billionaire owner.
Bit of reality required to who we can and can't compete with, and about the lure of European competition.

You can scoff about the Europa League, but European competition is an attraction for the sort of players we should have been in the market for, particularly foreign ones. We also finished 7th - the best of the rest - that should have been a big marketing statement, but rings pretty hollow now.

Whose scoffing?
Absolutely brilliant for us as a club, but counter balancing a billionaire owner who pays daft wages?
Not really I feel

And again, you are completely ignoring the reality of Fulham and their owner with their spending power.

I’m not ignoring it. I’m simply saying some players would happily have come to play in the Europa league and get a good wage, rather than get a very good wage and get relegated.

In terms of spending power we are a mid level championship club at best
Yes the time to spend was in the summer but that ship has sailed now and the next two weeks will show if we have done anything behind the scenes since then

You really think the attraction of playing in the qualifying stages of the Europa league was going to attract top class talent to Turf Moor?
Leicester struggled to attract players and the could offer the Group stages of the CL.

Didn’t they spend more than £100m on transfers and goodness knows how much in salaries ?
How exactly do you think we can compete with Fulham when they are spending like this ?

Baffling how some people can’t grasp that our position in the summer, in terms of being able to attract better players, was the best we’ve been in for many many a year. Yes it was just the Europa League, but it’s still European competition, and Burnley finished 7th in the richest league in world football. Now we are in the relegation zone looking like a club on its ass with what we are currently serving up.

Re: ARTICLE: No signings yet but speculation mounting
That’s one player. We might struggle to compete now, but we had a strong hand in the summer. Why does everyone assume all players just go where the most money is? Joey Barton didn’t. Players with character want to better themselves. We could have offered that opportunity a few months agoTVC15 wrote:Clearly not that bizarre given Mawson chose Fulham before us....why do you think that was ?

Joey Barton was going to sign for West Ham - and would have done but for them pulling the deal. You are a bit naive if you think that a player who earned £75k a week for many years did not come here for money. How do you know any other club were interested at the time ?
These players you talk about “with character” and who would come to a club on a lower salary than they were offered by another club are few and far between. Tbh in this league I would be amazed if there were any.

Whatever deal we gave Hart am I pretty sure it was the best (or only) offer he had which also meant he could leave City which was his number one objective.
