Total hip replacement tomorrow...

Post by Clarets4me » Sun Aug 05, 2018 12:32 pm

After some years of increasing gip with my arthritic hips, I'm due for the first of my hip replacements tomorrow morning ... a legacy of 20 years of scrums, lineouts, and general mayhem on the Rugby pitch . If I'd known then what it would entail in later life, I wouldn't have changed a thing .... my oldest & closest friends all date back to then, and had some great times ...

Starting to feel a little apprehensive now, despite outward bravado !! Mrs Clarets4me fussing round packing pyjamas, toiletry bag, reading material etc ...

Anybody else had it done or friends, relatives etc ?? I'd welcome some reassuring words at this point !! :D :D

Mum had a double (not at the same time) but was literally on her feet after a week or so.. they really try to push you to stay active!
One other thing she swears by is getting into yoga and Pilates (not a manly thing to do, but it has helped like nothing)

I had a knee replacement and my friend had a hip replacement. You're bound to be apprehensive, that's natural. You will be fine and eventually wished you'd had it done earlier. I say this often but listen to what the professionals tell you in regard to the excercises and rehabilitation, that's the important bit. Good luck with it, it will be well worth it.

My dad has had 5 hip replacements done and the difference in aftercare from the first to the last is amazing. You'll be up and about by Tuesday morning so don't worry and relax..

Mate, I'd walk down St James' St in a Rovers Top Hat singing " I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts " at the top of my voice if I thought it would aid recovery !! Thanks, and hope your Mum's doing well !! :D

My mum's had 8 or 9 replacements done since her first one in her 20's. They are pretty routine theses days, especially if it's your first one as there is plenty of bone there to attach the new hip to. You are now up and walking within a couple of days, and home within a couple of weeks.

Good luck, and a speedy recovery Clarets4me!

The last two people I know had ops were up the same day and home in 3 days... Both over 80 as well so doubt you'll be in for long

Hi Clarets4me, my Dad had hip replacement - after many years of struggling - when he was 81, if memory serves. Gave him several more good years. My brother had one of his done, 50(ish) - he's been back running again for more than 10 years.

Good luck. As above, no reason why it's not "routine."

Easily the best operation in terms of pain, recovery and improvement to quality of life. Had my hip done 7 years ago along with both ankles, total shoulder replacement and a rebuild of my elbow.

The first 3 months are the most trying in terms of not over doing things. Got to be careful not to cross your legs and make sure you sleep on your back with a big pillow between your knees.

All the best with the op. :D :D

I think my mum's last one was more complex as it was the 6th or 7th on the same hip, maybe that's why she was in longer? Home in 3 days is amazing tbh.

Had mine done 7 years ago. They won’t let you home till you can get up and down a flight of stairs. This should be within a few days. They will make you put weight on it within first day or so. I needed crutches for about 4 weeks and was able to drive after 6 weeks. I don’t regret it for a moment as the joint itself is now pain free. As said above, do follow their physio guidelines carefully. I was a bit too cautious in the early months and now have some muscle pain around the top of that thigh which I would not have if I had got moving a bit quicker. You won’t regret it but be prepared for some pretty strong pain initially. Pain killers are a must at the start. Hope this helps.

Funny you should say that, Ian, but Simon Morris, the Claret's Doctor is an old friend from the Rugby days & it was he who told me to go and get some X-rays about 18 months ago when I saw him at a Rugby lunch ...

As for midfield, I fear not, as I more resemble Neil Ruddock's larger older brother !!

Is it literally like you hadn't had it done? Or are there any signs such as pain that remind you you've had a replacement?

Factual: Before I had it done I had to lift my leg into the car and was taking 8 ibuprofen/naproxen a day. Now I don’t take any painkillers and can walk 5 miles or cycle 25 miles no problem. (I was only early 50s when I had it done). Like I said I still have some muscle pain but that’s because I was scared to get it moving too much in the first 3-6 months. I was told to avoid impact on it so I don’t, for example, jump off heights any more. Also I had to stop playing badminton just to protect the new joint. After all I want it to last maybe 30 years.

That's why I'm surprised somebody said they go running! As I assumed weight bearing exercises would have to be kept to a minimum. And I thought they only lasted 10 years, so 30 years sounds good to me.

Best wishes Clarets4me. Knew you were going soon. I see an orthopaedic surgeon on 1st October to start my journey re my hips. I am also of the understanding that it is a routine op and they have you up and about as soon as.

My mother has had a new hip and two new knees. She can walk now pain free. Went up Pendle the other week and regularly does 10 miles along the side of the canal. Biggest piece of advice is you MUST do the rehab exercises. They will hurt but if you don't you won't get the maximum mobility . Stick at it and good luck.

Good advice. Mine is now seven years old - titanium and ceramic. Very little pain after the op, sent home after 3 days with only aspirin and paracetamol. Absolutely vital to follow closely all the instructions from the surgeon and physiology. I was out and about on elbow crutches as soon as I got home and followed the exercise regime recommended. Also took the advice of a siesta in the afternoon. Had to miss a couple of home matches.

Bloke in the same spin class as me has two new hips and a new knee. Hard work keeping up with him!

On the other hand I’m convinced I need a new hip, but my surgeon, perhaps the top in the region, says not, and has referred me to a sports specialist for possible bone shaving

Hi Clarets4me, I can't comment from experience of your particular procedure but having had by pass surgery I can relate to your feelings of apprehension but can also tell you, from experience, that whilst your apprehension is normal it is not necessary. Best advice, as already stated, listen to the professionals, push yourself hard and before you know it you'll be wondering what all the fuss was about.
Good Luck

When they talk about lifespans of these replacements, the problem is that they have not been doing the ceramic on ceramic for more than about 15? years. They therefore can’t say for certain how long they expect them to last e.g. 15 years for now but this will go up as people have them for longer (hope that makes sense). The metal on metal ones are unpopular now due to reports of very small metal shavings wearing off over time. Apparently the ceramic ones are much more resilient. Hope it all goes really well and you don’t look back but are soon feeling the benefits.

My brother had his done last Monday - got a call at 9:30 offering him a cancellation and had it done in the afternoon. He was home by Thursday and I've been to see him today and he's doing really well.

Advice is to do as asked, not too much and not too little, and take the pain killers. Good luck with it, you'll soon be getting the benefit.

From an Engineering perspective.... I'm currently working for Depuy in Leeds who are among the largest providers of hip replacement stems / cups and liners. The amount of effort that goes into designing and testing these things is unbelievable - even compared to my previous industries such as nuclear warhead handling systems and specific areas of fighting vehicles. The material grades / manufacturing precision / regulatory redtape / costs is mindblowing. Been to several cadaver labs where surgeons test the new technology on specimens - the professionalism and attention to detail just gives me a warm feeling inside that I would have nothing to worry about if and when I need the operation

Hi Tim, had both done now 6 years ago and 6 months ago, nothing to worry about at all, after all the pain you will be a pain free guy tomorrow. I can do anything now, no pain, no limp. Wishing you all the best and this time tomorrow you will wonder what all the fuss was about.

I had a knee done 4 years ago and same a guy around 60 who was well into running all his life had his hip done, he was told he would be 4 nights in hospital, the day after his op he got up and into the chair at the side of the bed and he went home on the 4th day so he only spent 3 nights in hospital, it is up to you how long it takes to be walking again but it helps to have the correct mental state and do all your exercises as instructed even though it will hurt at times, good luck .

Good luck, I had a knee done 8 years ago, do exactly what your medical team tell you and you'll be absolutely fine. All the very best, ALP
