U23s v Blackburn
Re: U23s v Blackburn
In hindsight it's sad but is there any point in the youth setups anymore,we have hardly produced anyone jay aside in my time in watching 25 years of Burnley. Not just us but all the prem teams just buy the best readymade players within there budgets. It's like why sign vydra on daft wages as a fourth striker just give the young agyei lad a chance!

Re: U23s v Blackburn
If most of the side are 18 year olds, isn't this a sign that the club is taking a forward-looking approach? Winning at U23 level isn't the end-game here - but developing a squad of talent for the next 4 years with a view to integrating the standout players into the first team setup surely is.
Anyone who claims a team of 18 year olds is likely to compete with a team of players with 3/4 years more strength and experience is being naive.

Shows how far we fell behind, they hardly seem to have much of a production line at Blackburn despite being better than us at that level for a long time. Even at the lowly levels their first team has been at recently, I can't think of many gems they've brought through the Cat 1 set up?
Going to be a big job to get a lad ready for Prem football with us, hopefully one day.

Re: U23's demise ?
I'm not as familiar with the details as many but weren't we doing quite well in the youth cup or similar a few years back (semi-finals or something?). Was that not under Blake, et al? I can't remember in detail so may have got the dates wrong.ClaretTony wrote:Read post 19.
The department is improving but two years ago it was at rock bottom, destroyed in five years by Blake and his cronies. Good people, coaches and scouts gone, others almost forced out. Someone once told me that for every year of damage it will take at least two years of repair. It's going to be a long, hard job but the building has started, that I can promise you.
So to suggest it's not working and pointing fingers at those in charge now is way wide of the mark. And, those neighbours down the road do continue to run a Cat 1 academy. We are just going into the second year as a cat 2 and remember that Blake all but cost us Cat 3 which would have meant the whole thing shutting down.
Just look beyond the results, there is good work going on in the academy, some really good work.

We got to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2011/12 - Blake had taken over the academy part way through that season. It took him a while to start destroying things.aggi wrote:I'm not as familiar with the details as many but weren't we doing quite well in the youth cup or similar a few years back (semi-finals or something?). Cheers. I didn't realise it was that long ago, I must be getting old.ClaretTony wrote:We got to the semi-finals of the FA Youth Cup in 2011/12 - Blake had taken over the academy part way through that season. It took him a while to start destroying things.

That Blake came in and ruined our set up isn’t the main issue as far as I can see. The main issue is that it was allowed to happen and despite, I assume, numerous people raising the problems.
A lesson that has hopefully been learned from the top down.

Did any of those Blackburn lads who beat us in the Youth cup semis go on to anything?

I don't really care about what happened with Blake, as the club has directors who, one assumes, must have been happy with what he was doing at the time.
Since then we've tried to bring players in to strengthen our development squads, there have been many failures. but at least we are now seeing a couple of lads bulking out the first team squad.

Re: U23s v Blackburn
Absolutely. Howe brought him in but those responsible are those who allowed Howe to bring him in when the three previous managers and the subsequent manager have rightly not had that authority. The chief exec and operational director at the time were Fletcher and Flood and, from what I believe, the finger points at them. Then Hoos, for whatever reason, protected him beyond belief. Howe, I know, had absolutely no interest in taking him back to Bournemouth.DCWat wrote:That Blake came in and ruined our set up isn’t the main issue as far as I can see.
