I have just booked Tuesday to Friday with Lufthansa via Frankfurt out and Munich in. Under 6 hrs in transit both ways, I could have got it for £200 cheaper but the transit times were circa 16 hours. But 20 hours waiting in airports doesn't appeal compared with visiting the sites (sights) that Athens has to offer.JR1882 wrote:Any clarets in the midlands flying from Birmingham??

We’ve just booked a basic hotel. £50 a night. Decent enough for the amount of time we will spend in it. 10 mins stroll from syntagma square

Re: Athens
Any advice on hotel locations would be appreciated (not been to Athens before).
I've booked to stay down by the ground at Piraeus, with it being on the coast I figured there would be bars etc, having looked on google street maps I may be incorrect, having said that, the recommendation for meeting at Magemenos Avlos Aminta after collecting tickets states there are a "few" bars, the word "few" doesn't entice me to want to book a hotel in that area.
Any advice would be welcome!

Plenty of bars restaurants etc around syntagma square. Not far to walk to collect tickets from there either.

Booked an Airbnb in Kolonaki, £50 a night can’t complain at that.

I'm staying in Glyfada for a few days then moving into the Zappion hotel for the Thusday night near the square/drop off point so I'm not messing about after the game.

Booking.com but I've got some sort of loyalty points, genius or something, never used, says 30% discount so probably that. Looks like a top hotel for the price.Granny WeatherWax wrote:Was double that per night when I looked, and still is. Who have you booked that through.

Re: Athens
Just booked an airbnb 2 mins walk from the pick up/drop off point near the original Olympic stadium, a little 2 room apartment for 25 euros a night. No messing around after the game. There were a couple more in the area still going for a similar price. Not the prettiest of places but looks close enough to the centre for exploring the sights at the weekend so if you're looking for a cheap, no frills type of place for a night's kip and shower then that is an economic option..
For those of you just needing a night then Airbnb would be the cheapest option; stay in someone's place for the night for about a tenner and you'll meet a local and hopefully a bit of brekky!!

Does anyone know stadium policy on bags?
Also they said no bags at turkey but you could leave them on the coach. Some actually got bags in though. Loyalclaret did and think I read he was on a similar trip...
As long as its relatively small and doesnt contain much you should be OK I think.

If it was tomorrow morning early hours you could get to Barcelona or Rome for instance very early and bare in mind the two hour clock changet it could be done.

Game starts at 2100 so finish for 2300 let's say. Then from the ground to the airport is pretty long way but you might be able to make the last metro/train or buses go 24 hours, you'd have to check where you can get a bus from if Metro/trains have finished for the night. I read it is possible to arrive to Piraeus from the airport direct and vice versa. at 0300 greek time now, there is a flight to Barcelona, and at 0500 to Roma & Belgrade, at 0600 there are loads to European cities, Paris, brussels, amsterdam, Franfurt, stansted ryanair.

Sure I would have been able to leave on coaches as there was value in it, only thing they referred to supervisor was a bag of crisp.

I could (without delays and problems) get to Manchester for 12:55. But that would still leave me too late.
There is one possible route. But would cost northwards of £600 one way and as much as I want to go I simply cant justify that. Had I not been to the previous 4 qualifying games I would have just booked and gone. But going to have to prioritise.

Just booked.
We'll travelling Wednesday evening and staying over in Zurich for the evening, then arrive in Athens around 1pm on Thursday.
Going the same way back, but have a full day in Zurich on the return trip (Monday), so it will be good to explore, as I've never been to Switzerland.

Re: Athens
excellent, from the map it looks a bit dodgy, loads of little side streets but it was cheap and near the coach drop off. My place looks to be just off the the main road leading out of the city & after the big National gardens; right between Metro stations of Syntagma & Evangelismos.thatdberight wrote:That area's great - stayed there before on holiday. These are all Ryanair flights that will get you to Leeds/Bradford airport Friday morning giving you time to get to Skipton
FROM:
Dublin 0755-0900 132 euros
Vilnius 0710-0755 168 euros
Malta 0645-0920 144 euros
Barcelona (Girona) 0640-0800 85 euros
Your task is to get to one of these destinations from Athens to change!!! Barcelona might be the one. I saw one this evening cancelled at 0200 and another one (with a different flight number) leaving at 0300ish Greek time.

Vueling Friday morning at 0135 arriving at Barcelona (cant find out which airport though) 0340. If it isnt Girona then you've gotta get there.
308 euros + 80 odd to Leeds. Can you get a cheap one from UK on Thursday or Weds? sounds like there has been a few decent ones outgoing. It's the return that seem costly.

Re: Athens
There is another one at 0400 ish that will get you in at 0605 but I dont think it is Girona, it is the main Barcelona airport, which is no good for that flight.
If there is a shuttle bus through the night to Girona from barcelona airport that'll get you in at 0600ish then it's possible
Edit: can't find anything between the airports, not even during the day. They don't seem to have a link between the airports, incredible!!

Re: Athens
Originally booked a hotel in Glyfada for three nights in what looked a decent place. Read the reviews on Trip Advisor last night and seems like it’s a contender for a location to film a Greek version of Fifty Shades. Most reviews mentioned how impressed that the sheets were clean!
Took the option of free cancellation and booked in the city centre now.

A couple of us travelling but messed around too much booking flights so our return options were limited to say the least! Having to go Leeds to Corfu Wednesday morning, then flying home Zante to Newcastle on Friday. Bit of a pain but no way I was missing another one after Istanbul.

Two of us out from Manchester Wed 1725 to Corfu stay overnight then into Athens local flight for 1015 staying at the Illicia hotel 2 min from ticket pick-up point then back Fri 0730 Athens to Corfu change into Manchester 1855

Re: Athens
Sounds like we could have a bigger following for this one. I’m going to be looking on enviously this time round though.
Really hope we make the group games. Although at the end of the season I was adamant I’d get to every European game, when it comes to it, it’s so difficult to justify the cost, and possibly more importantly, the time implications.
Hopefully we get to the groups and there’s a couple of nearer games where you can do an ‘in and out’ in 24 hours or so.

Re: Athens
Me, too. I've had to stamp my feet a little with the missus this year for hols and said we'd be using the games for part of our hols hence the 4 day trip to Athens. Unfortunately,Istanbul wasn't possible but the home game against Aberdeen was, where we had a few days away. The cost is way too much for an in & out situation; I want to have at least some time to soak up the atmosphere before the game and then have a few days after culture wise and have a full city experience.Quickenthetempo wrote:I know time off work is an issue for some but I just don't get the desire for in and out trips when your visiting decent places in the sunshine.

I desperately want to be there (if only for the game and bit of build up), and if it was weekend games it would be easier.
It was away from Tuesday, back Friday, for istanbul. It was fabulous but I can’t continue doing that kind of thing at the expense of a family holiday.... even if it is a unique season, and unlikely to come around again.
The ‘in and outs’ would be marginally earsier to
Justify with the missus and worst case I could just make out it was a really long day at work

Absolutely. To me I would love to see many of the cities. But the priority here is the stadiums and the match. It has to be. Hopefully get to see some of the cities, but will have been to or will go them again in future.Indecisive wrote:It’s just annual leave mate.

I used to think the same about England fans. Couldnt understand why people did in and out for them. But then again most of them were weekend games and more spread out.
