Great signing for Southampton if this was 3 years ago. Now? Not sure.

Re: Danny Ings
I was at the Rosebowl last night watching Hampshire V somerset and was proudly wearing my Burnley top- got talking to a few Saints fans and they seem pretty confident at the start of the season.........apparently they have a good pre-season and Austin is fit and firing
they think we will have the same problems as they did a couple of seasons aga when they were in Europe which resulted in them struggling in the league
all in all a good set of fans down at Southampton although Hampshire are toilet
Be happy with A draw

No time for Southampton after their relegation game against us, pitch invasion, coins thrown into the away end, women and kids being led away with tears and blood flowing. Their tosser element is bigger than you’d expect. Once again, I hope they go bust.

i think this will work out fine for him, a genuine talent, injury prone, but skilled, back on home turf and he will be a threat to all the opponents if he stays fit

I can't comment on their fans but i'm getting cheesed off with clubs casually writing off their debts and then splashing the cash.
They do need a striker to get 10-12 goals to ensure they aren't in another relegation scrap,Austin only netted 7 Premier League goals last season.

Not sure buying another injury prone striker to complement the injury prone Austin was the best answer though.tiger76 wrote:I can't comment on their fans but i'm getting cheesed off with clubs casually writing off their debts and then splashing the cash.

Re: Danny Ings
They can take turns to be injured. Or maybe a bit of bionic surgery, and they can make one whole striker out of the parts of two.deanothedino wrote:Not sure buying another injury prone striker to complement the injury prone Austin was the best answer though.

Re: Danny Ings
I guess they didn't have many options on deadline day,so had to get somebody in,it is a risk even as a loan,if Danny breaks down in the next month, they have a long time till the next window.deanothedino wrote:Not sure buying another injury prone striker to complement the injury prone Austin was the best answer though.
Beyond Austin and Ings their striking options look weak,Shane Long is shot-shy,Gabbiadini is hit and miss, and their only other forward is Sam Gallagher who even at Championship level is hardly prolific.

Watched them last week against Borussia Monchengladbach and they were awful. No structure and Austin and Gabbiodini arguing with each other throughout.
Re: Danny Ings
They say it's a £5m loan fee and an agreed transfer for the balance, making it up to £18, next summer. That sounds to me like a Liverpool attempt to rob us of £1m sell-on fee. Hope it fails.

Re: Danny Ings
Klopp had only good things to say about Danny on his departure:
"It is a very strange feeling saying goodbye to Danny. The biggest emotion is how much we will miss him.
“He is such an outstanding boy. Honestly, if you could bottle character and spirit, his would sell worldwide - he is so incredibly positive and full of energy. But we won’t just miss his character because he is a footballer who has all the tools.
“What is clear is that in his time here he had zero luck really, certainly in my time. Before joining I tried to watch as many games on tape as I could from the season so far and Danny Ings stood out as someone I was really looking forward to coaching.
“We all know his story and the bad luck he has had since then.
“It’s why the other emotion is that of being pleased for Danny that he has such a good move and his future is now very bright.
“When he said to us he thinks this is the window it might be best to look elsewhere, for the sake of his career and playing more regular football, it was clear early on that Southampton has great appeal to him personally. It’s his home, his family is there, it’s his boyhood club. They have a great manager and I think the supporters and him will feed off each other’s passion and energy.
“So we say farewell to a friend, but for Danny I know the best chapters in his personal story are still to be written. He is as fit now as at any point of his career I would bet and he just requires the opportunity.
“He has that opportunity and on behalf of his Liverpool family we say good luck Danny and we will miss you.”

Re: Danny Ings
Massive commitment from Southampton for a player with a catalogue of injuries - in effect it is a five year deal.
They've committed to a one year loan deal followed by a four year contract to be signed next July with a transfer fee of £20 million rising to £22 million.

20% of any profit - so if he doesn't get another injury we''ll get £2.7 million next year which would take the total to £9.2 million.Buxtonclaret wrote:What's our sell on clause again?
Whatever his talent, it shows what's happened to the transfer market if a player can get two bad injuries and hardly play in three years and his value goes up to £20 million. That wouldn't be a lot for a fully fit Ings though.

Couldn't remember if it was 20 or 25%. Another nice wedge.
And yes, risky, given what it'll cost them.
But if he stays injury free and, gets back to anything like he was, Saints will have a good 'un.
Be interesting to see how it goes. Hope it works out for him. He's had a pretty crap time since leaving us.

Re: Danny Ings
How many goals does it take to stay in Premier League? How many did City score last season to win it?
I'm sure there's a formula that can show how much each goal is worth as a share of the EPL tv money - with adjustments for a good defence (or a weak one).
So, put x goals against a player's name - and you are starting to see how much a goal scorer might be worth. Then you've got to factor in that there will always be 3 teams that get relegated.

Re: Danny Ings
Ollie Watkins signed by Brentford last summer for £1.8m
Brentford valued the player in this window at £15m plus but declined to sell.
Attacking players with an eye for goal will always command a premium fee.

Re: Danny Ings
I've got a fairly strong feeling that Southampton didn't actually write off any debt when they went into administration (apart from internal debt) but it was actually all paid back. Not sure where I saw that though, someone may be able to cast some light either way.
Looks like it's an expensive try before you buy, I imagine that remaining fee after the loan is conditional on him staying fit (I'd imagine a clause of "available for x number of games in the 2018/19 season").
EDIT: Yes they did pay the debts in full
Not only did the new owner save the club, but he also paid the debts in full, as opposed to many new owners who only pay a few pennies in the pound for debts owed, leaving many small business and public authorities out of pocket.

Not a try before you buy as I read it. Guaranteed transfer, next July, on 4 year deal. £18m then plus £2m in addons.aggi wrote:Looks like it's an expensive try before you buy, I imagine that remaining fee after the loan is conditional on him staying fit (I'd imagine a clause of "available for x number of games in the 2018/19 season").

Sunday could be a rather unpleasant day for our defence if Ings and Austin both play. They could be the perfect match for each others games and if they work as well together as Ings and Vokes did in the Championship for us then no reason why Southampton can't be back vying for a EL spot at the end of the season (assuming they stay fit)

If he remains injury free he will score goals regularly and I wish we still had him at Burnley. I think Liverpool got more than they should for him given his lack of playing time but Southampton have possibly made a really good signing. I just hope he doesn't score against us but suspect he just might.

I don't remember Austin and Ings playing very often together. Was it injury or just Austin doesn't play with partners very well? He's an out and out goal scorer who wants the team to play to him.

I’ll say that he changed the game when he came on, his vigour was enough to pressure us and push us back too deep. That said, I still wouldn’t want him back with us as he looked one tough challenge away from 12 months out.

Re: Danny Ings
I know about his injuries but if he's back to full fitness he would be just the type of player we need. Hopefully Vydra can fill that void.
Re: Danny Ings
Showed in his brief spell exactly what he brings, he was the key that nearly unlocked our defence.
You'd imagine once up to speed and settled in with his team mates, he will play a major role for them, and be involved in most of their attacking play/goals
