Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
Are we always going to bring stuff like that up?
Conditions were tough. Very humid. But they weren't that good yet we didn't test them.
Enjoyed the trip but disappointed to travel all that way and not even see a shot on target tbh.

I can understand your disappointment cricketfield, but SD couldn't have known just what level they actually were. He's gone belts and braces first leg. Use what he's learned next week. (I know he'll have vids but it isn't the same, I'm sure you agree judging by your tripcricketfieldclarets wrote:Are we always going to bring stuff like that up?

a draw, away from home with a depleted team. Not exactly over the moon but quietly satisfied with a job done, hopefully next week we will be a different animal.

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
For the record im very happy with the result tonight as I expect 99% of us are but constant harking back to the dark days whenever someone expresses a critical opinion is just tedious and pethetic

I’d have taken that before kick off. Performance of course wasn’t great offensively but defensively I was impressed.

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
Last year in Turkey they beat Braga and Bruges, drew with Hoffenheim and Ludogorets Razgrad, and lost (2-1) to Seville. Perhaps a little bit better than "bang average".Vegas Claret wrote:I was at loads of those games and whilst the result tonight was decent let's not kid anybody, offensively we where dreadful against a bang average team

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
They were bang average tonight and that was probably due to our defensive performance - we were garbage offensively though from open play. I watched the Seville game last season and they weren't much better, didn't see the others.dsr wrote:Last year in Turkey they beat Braga and Bruges, drew with Hoffenheim and Ludogorets Razgrad, and lost (2-1) to Seville. It was ok. We restricted them but we look short on ideas going forward at the moment which is a tad worrying for the bread and butter of the Prem.
Wish we could have nicked a goal but a draw is ok.
Hopefully Vydra will give us an added sonething up front.

A away draw against a team that has finished second and third in the Turkish League over the last two seasons and who have lost only one home league match in those two seasons. The expectation of Burnley fans is .....................
The thing that is worrying me most is the crazy schedule with the game tonight, back home tomorrow (?), to Southampton on Saturday for the game on Sunday. Training?

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
First ‘proper’ European tie, reminded me a bit of our first away games in the Premier League. Trying not to give much away.
It’ll be a big learning curve for us should we go on.
Happy with the draw against a neat and tidy side.

On the face of it, it’s not bad.
But I will say we’re new (as fans) to seeing our team in knock out football. 0-0 away are not really that good a result.

I enjoyed some of the games in the original post in 88 and 89. Think you need to go back a couple of seasons to highlight your point.
Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
Is it a sign of growth, considering five years ago we was an average team in the championship and now fans are disappointed we drew away in a UEFA qualifying round.
Must improve on keeping the ball without a doubt but would have taken that result if offered it.
On to Sunday.

Enjoyed the trip but disappointed to travel all that way and not even see a shot on target tbh.
Hendrick had a shot well saved

Of course we want to see shots on target, but that wasn't the aim of the evening. The aim was to get a result, whilst not knackering ourselves prior to Sunday. That's exactly what we did, how can you be unhappy.

We could've easily put a goal or two past them and make next weeks work easier and in turn make the weekends game that week easier.
Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
5 years ago we were about to start a season without Austin having signed a crap keeper a Huddersfield reject and an over the hill midfielder playing a lump as a striker and an untried and injury prone young striker. We were one of the favourites for relegation and the rest as they say is history. Oh and most on here probably would have opted for a better managerJeffbfc wrote:Is it a sign of growth, considering five years ago we was an average team in the championship and now fans are disappointed we drew away in a UEFA qualifying round.

That Turkish side were crap and rusty, their first competitive game of the season, I expected us to get at them, sharp and at least score an away goal. I'm not sure if it's a good result at all, any goal they score next week is worth double, I think we'd have been better getting at them this week and holding out next week given the importance of away goals.

Cracking result tonight, sets us up nicely for the return.
Every result that has gone before is completely irrelevant.

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
They were far from ' bang average'.
Their midfield hunted in three's and closed our players down very quickly when off the ball, when in possession they rarely made a bad pass.
Up front they didn't present many problems but that was because we contained them so well.
A good result.
We will beat them at the Turf.

He was in the stands watching the game, more than entitled to be disappointed with our attacking performanceColburn_Claret wrote:You don't seem to understand football at all.
Of course we want to see shots on target, but that wasn't the aim of the evening. The aim was to get a result, whilst not knackering ourselves prior to Sunday. That's exactly what we did, how can you be unhappy.

Everybody is entitled to feel anyway they like. But if he is disappointed with our attacking display, then he isn't being realistic.Vegas Claret wrote:He was in the stands watching the game, more than entitled to be disappointed with our attacking performance
Away legs in Europe involve a 4 day match. Travelling there, at least a day early for interviews, the match, travelling back. The heat in country like Turkey. All that 3 days before a league match. When do you recover, when do you fit in training, tactics without tiring players even further.
At home there's no travel, an extra 2 days of rest, lots more time for recuperation and training. Next week I fully expect a stronger, more attacking side, because SD knows it shouldn't affect the Watford game.
IF we qualify he will employ exactly the same sort of team, and the same sort of tactics in Athens, and he'd be right. So if lots of shots is what you are looking for then going to Olympiakos is pointless.

Agreed. Burnley 0 - 6 Hereford Utd for example.Blackrod wrote:I enjoyed some of the games in the original post in 88 and 89. Think you need to go back a couple of seasons to highlight your point.

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
They've known since last May we were in the Europa league, had we signed players 4 weeks ago we may not have been so toothless. As to you other points all I see are excuses which our manager rarely makes. As for olympiacos, they will batter either of the teams I saw tonight, usually a CL team and very experienced to boot. That's not to say we won't improve by then should we get through next week. To not have a single attempt on goal is poor considering the team we put out.Colburn_Claret wrote:Everybody is entitled to feel anyway they like. Edit. I should add you could tell from the first minute we would struggle offensively, the distances between our attacking players gave us zero chance of any cohesion. I'm happy with the result in tricky conditions, I just don't make excuses for our attacking play or lack thereof

Just in cab driving along the Bospherous, 2am, had a few beers and a weird clay kebab thing, watched us draw away from home in a European game. Life is good. Not looking at past results, enjoying the now UTC.

So Burnley could win the home leg 6-3 and it would effectively be a 6-6 draw?KRBFC wrote: I'm not sure if it's a good result at all, any goal they score next week is worth double
Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
Are you unaware of how away goals work? if they score 1, we need 2, if they score 2, we need 3. Basically we need to win the game or draw 0-0.djemba-djemba wrote:So Burnley could win the home leg 6-3 and it would effectively be a 6-6 draw?

Re: For anybody disappointed about tonight's result.
Whilst I'm not going to disagree the match was of poor quality, what I will say I loved every minute of the Istanbul experience. Istanbul is an absolutely crazy place, silly busy, chaotic, exhilarating and stunning.
I remember well days when a similar scoreline at Barnet was a well earned point.
Enjoy every minute guys of the adventure we are on whether next week is the end or it's onwards to Greece and Olympiakos.
Like I said, Istanbul was a brilliant experience. Embrace it.
