So who had the best and worst transfer window
Considering the signings and sales, along with current squads who has had the best and who has had the worst window?
Reasonably happy with our own. It was important not to lose critical players like Mee, Vokes, Tarkowski etc as adding to them. But the three we brought in all bring something we need (if unforeseen in Harts case).
I would have to say the worse window is Everton and Brighton. Everton have spent big but not addressed their problems. Also the money spent looks like a massive gamble at best but massively poor value in reality. I cant see them finishing higher than they did under sam or koeman. Brighton I just cant see how you can integrate 15 players especially after a decent season.
Liverpool have probably had the best window. Just addressing their few weak areas and retaining a very strong squad.

Most of those Brighton signings are for their development squad.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
Everton and Liverpool the best for me - the quality of the players they’ve bought in are top drawer.
Not sure how in what way the OP suggests Everton haven’t addressed their shortcomings.
Fulham, Wolves and to a lesser extent Brighton will be interesting. Personally I think Brighton will do well because they have an excellent manager, though their fan base appears giddy with expectation. Fulham have complimented their squad really well with a good blend of youth and experience. Wolves are going for more wholesale change than is maybe necessary, which could be dangerous.
On paper you’d have to put us towards the lower end, but our defensive strength is quite something now, especially if Taylor keeps improving.

All the best teams appear to have bought fewer than 4 signings, a sign of a stable team...

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
Potentially those with the greater number of senior players signed could turn out to have the worst window.
Having to integrate that many players in a short space of time whilst also ensuring everyone gets a game etc can cause dressing room disharmony.
Also could mean that players who were already there may feel like they don't have the backing of their manager.
You'd have to wonder what Spurs are up to, at times last season they looked in need of fresh ideas.
I'm happy enough with our window though.
Looking forward to January so I can see people slating the club again and making baseless accusations/claims.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
I just think Everton have gone about things wrong. Bernard is a good signing on a free which I suppose makes richarlisons fee a bit more palatable. But I dont see the defenders from Barcelona being the answer to the problems in that area. Nor do I think they have filled the gaps up front.
Wolves imo have made way too many changes to a team that won the league.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
Spurs is a funny one. Especially given how reliant they are on kane. Could they become like arsenal after moving to a new stadium? Spurs are at the midst appealing to new players theyve ever been and they should have got 3 or 4 good players in.GodIsADeeJay81 wrote:Potentially those with the greater number of senior players signed could turn out to have the worst window.

But they do seem to blend youth a lot and have kept all of their best players. So they will be ok. Still top 4 I think.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
Times places Burnley in 15th position by gross spend, £29 million. Spurs (£nil), Palace (£9.5), Watford (£24,8), Newcastle (£25.2) and Cardiff (£28.5) all spent less than Burnley.
Does the table of money spent mean that Liverpool, gross spend £161 million and received £30 million, net £131 million, mean that Liverpool had the best transfer window?
If it is all about how much money goes out and how much comes in (I'm sure no one thinks it is), then I expect the table should take into account (a) the players who have been retained by signing new contracts - Ben Mee signing new contract being very important for Burnley and (b) sell-on money that flows through the selling club to the clubs that hold sell-on rights - again, possibly, Danny Ings to Soton results in sell-on money flowing back to Burnley.
Of course, it's not all about money, it's how the team performs with the incomings and outgoings through the window. The "best and worst" will be decided in May 2019.
I'm happy, btw, with how the window has worked out for Burnley. I'm looking forward to St Mary's at lunch time on Sunday.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
As ever those gross spend figures don't tell the full story.
In this table a player who joined a club on a free transfer, tempted there by a huge wage offer, would be counted as £0 spend which it clearly isn't.
More accurate would be gross spend based not just on the transfer fee, but also the signing on fee, agent's fee and player's wages for the duration of the contract.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
However one regards our recruitment I am sure that posts stating that we needed just 2 outfield additions in this transfer window would have been in very short supply, if not non-existent, up until 5pm yesterday.
There were far more posts claiming that we needed 3 or 4, especially somebody to play out wide, but that they would be reserving judgement until the window had actually closed.

Mostly young players for their development squad, I'm not sure why they've been included on the list of signings given that our youth signings haven't been.quoonbeatz wrote:there's some proper quantity over quality there.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
I think most of us would have been ecstatic if we had signed a winger. We addressed the obvious issues and are now pretty much at a place where we have two good choices for every position when everyone is fit (with the exception of 'keeper where we have 4 good options).kentonclaret wrote:However one regards our recruitment I am sure that posts stating that we needed just 2 outfield additions in this transfer window would have been in very short supply, if not non-existent, up until 5pm yesterday.

No pleasing CFClaret ha. If we signed the Barcelona mascot we would be over the moon, never mind 3 of their players.

Really difficult one to judge when looking at teams like Brighton and Huddersfield.

Liverpool have bought well.
Spurs have had a decent window when you consider the likes of Kane, Erikson, Aleidweild, Dembele, Trippier are all still there.
Burnley one player short but a few clubs are.
Id say the worst Man Utd. Im not entirely sure they have a clue whats going on. I suspect the board just ain't willing to back that absolute cock head in charge

You should’ve heard the ******** spouted on Talksport yesterday about Wolves and Fulham’s new signings. They were positively gushing over them because they’d spent so big.
I personally feel both of the above teams will struggle. You cannot replace that many players and expect them to seamlessly gel in such a short space of time.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
A Newcastle fan was going apesh!t on ssn, paraphrased he said
'I don't understand why clubs like Bournemouth Burnley and Huddersfield, who have smaller fanbases and are places where football isn't the be all and end all, can spend more than us.
We've made three signings v their six and spent about £5m more.
I wonder how the lad dresses himself in the morning if that's his take away from the transfer window

Anyone else concerned that Utd may want Dyche...? Afterall, they took a successful chap from Aberdeen and built a legacy, Dyche could be their Fergie MK2. It’s the only club I’d actually worry about coming in for him, especially if we have adapted again and look good again this season by Christmas...Steve1956 wrote:Best..Palace holding on to Zaha

Can you imagine the outcry from the United plastics if they did go for Dyche?Rick_Muller wrote:Anyone else concerned that Utd may want Dyche...? Anybody else on her not even heard of a vast number of the players on the list? At least we know what we are getting in every aspect with our three.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
Does anyone else think that there should be a restriction on how many foreign loans each club can get? Looking at the list again, it’s worrying that so many foreign players have come on loan, or am I being fickle...?
Edit - I notice that it’s Wolves and Fulham who have the most - perhaps it’s a risk averse way of adding numbers to their squads...

just read this about spuds not signing anyone, probably the daftest thing i've seen about the transfer window.

Re: So who had the best and worst transfer window
There is no way the clubs signing big numbers of players can have done their full diligence and looked properly into the characters of everyone of them. We've learned from the dressing room cohesion at Gawthorpe how important that is. There will be some bad eggs slipped through the net at some clubs and they will cause problems. Plus to make a judgement on who has had the best window you would need a superb knowledge of European football because I've never heard of the vast majority

Somethings not right at Spurs. I know they're building a new stadium but not signing anyone is just odd. A couple more players and they could have had a real go this season. I'm wonder if they are gearing up to sell the club
