Which Lane?
Came off the M65 today went past ASDA then got to the new roundabout. I wanted to go towards the magistrates court so I took the lane on the right (towards the M65W) but I was cut up on the inside by someone in the left lane. My passenger (a local) said no-one has a clue which lane they are supposed to be in at that roundabout and it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.
Anybody got a clue what the correct protocol is at the roundabout?

Re: Which Lane?
It's now clearly marked - left lane for left and straight on, right lane for right. As you would expect.
As originally marked, it implied that the left lane was for all three directions and the right lane shouldn't be used. This was because of incompetence at County Hall. But it's now been corrected.
I doubt there will be a serious accident, though - not between two cars travelling in the same direction hitting side door to side door. An annoying and expensive accident, now that will certainly happen. People in the correct lane need to do a shoulder check for people that haven't grasped the rules yet.

Re: Which Lane?
Was a lengthy thread on this very subject a while ago but basically when coming from Asda use left lane to turn left up Active way towards Halfords or to go straight on towards the Town Mouse pub.
Right hand lane to go past Kwik Fit/B&m's so you were in the correct lane IMO

Re: Which Lane?
Traffic lights on roundabouts frustrate me. I'm sure either whole idea of a roundabout is to keep traffic flowing

Someone will always cut you up ..the one near b n q Brierfield .drivers cut across when realising they're heading for the industrial est.instead of east bound. As for the next roundabout exiting east at barrowford ...words fail me.brexit wrote:Came off the M65 today went past ASDA then got to the new roundabout. I use that roundabout near B&Q Brierfield every day on way home from work and had a few near misses with drivers cutting across from the LH lane.tim_noone wrote:Someone will always cut you up ..the one near b n q Brierfield .drivers cut across when realising they're heading for the industrial est.instead of east bound. It's worse when there's a long queue in the RH lane as drivers use the LH lane to try and jump the queue even though the lights change fairly quickly and you don't have to queue for long.

Re: Which Lane?
When you say "cut up on the inside" do you mean by the driver who was in the correct lane unlike you in the wrong lane? The 8ft long letters on the ground are a bit of a clue!brexit wrote:Came off the M65 today went past ASDA then got to the new roundabout. No, he was turning right so was in the right hand lane. As indicated by the 8ft long letters.corporal jones wrote:When you say "cut up on the inside" do you mean by the driver who was in the correct lane unlike you in the wrong lane? The 8ft long letters on the ground are a bit of a clue!

Get yourself an Audi or a Range Rover, that way you can do what you want and still be in the right.

Re: Which Lane?
It always baffles me why there are so many roundabouts where the only correct lane signage is a road marking, thirty or so yards before the roundabout.
It’s fine if it’s quiet but if you don’t know the area and it’s busy, road marking notifying of the correct lane are pointless.
They should all have signs well in advance of the roundabout. Wouldn’t stop the tossers lane jumping mind!

Re: Which Lane?
They still have that roundabout near Gatwick which has roads going through center of it AND traffic lights around it?

Re: Which Lane?
I think in it's current format it fundamentally works, but they could probably add a few more signs to leave people in no doubt regarding which lane they need to be in, as people are still misinterpreting it. The disastrous original markings put down after the revamp really didn't help though.

Re: Which Lane?
It doesn't help that both lanes are labelled with the same road number (A679?) and if you (correctly) use the right hand lane, the second you get onto the roundabout, the road markings are such that you're in the wrong lane and have to cross the line to get into the left hand lane before the turn.

really. I take it you don't use it everyday like me and nearly every time I use it I dread it as no one has a clue.

Re: Which Lane?
The idea is that the left hand lane should be clear by the time you merge across because everyone who was in it has turned left up to Sainsbury's or gone straight ahead to the Town Mouse. The problem is that people are incorrectly using that lane for the turn up to Kwik Fit.Sproggy wrote:It doesn't help that both lanes are labelled with the same road number (A679?) and if you (correctly) use the right hand lane, the second you get onto the roundabout, the road markings are such that you're in the wrong lane and have to cross the line to get into the left hand lane before the turn.

Re: Which Lane?
As in, it now works if everybody is in the correct lane, when it was initially relaid there was no correct lane because the road markings were completely wrong and contradictory. However, if you read further on in my post I mention people are still misinterpreting what lane they should be in, hence the need for more signs.pushpinpussy wrote:I think in it's current format it fundamentally works.

Re: Which Lane?
Not any more. They A679 right sign that was originally in the left lane has been painted out and repainted in the right, correct lane. It's just that some people haven't registered the change.Sproggy wrote:It doesn't help that both lanes are labelled with the same road number (A679?) and if you (correctly) use the right hand lane, the second you get onto the roundabout, the road markings are such that you're in the wrong lane and have to cross the line to get into the left hand lane before the turn.

but that's the point. 95 percent of folk do not know which is the correct lane.

This is the issue.dsr wrote:It's just that some people haven't registered the change.
I was going around the “new layout” near Nelson & Colne College the other day, going up towards Nelson, when the car in front suddenly stopped for no reason, at the place where the “second” roundabout use to be.
I can only assume that they had forgotten that it was no longer a roundabout or was expecting a car to cross divide

Re: Which Lane?
I did, and its a lot better than that bloody roundabout they've screwed up near B&Q - it was so much easier when it had no lane markings on it, not been across it for months now, but I can get across MK in 10 minutes during rush hour - you cant do that in any other city or town in the UKtybfc wrote:Don't move to Milton Keynes
