Dyche: They'd be back later from a night out

Post by dibraidio » Sat Aug 11, 2018 7:52 am

I'm a bit surprised by the idea of the team traveling home overnight and arriving back at 4 am.
Dyche always talks about rest and recover being as important as training so I'd have thought that they'd have traveled in the morning after a good night's sleep.
What would have happened if they'd have been delayed by 5 hours like they were for the trip to Aberdeen? They wouldn't have been able to simply go home and wait. They'd have all been totally knackered and fighting a battle to catch up on their sleep before the game at the weekend.
Sleep deprivation has a massive effect on your judgement and even though you might not notice you're much more likely to make a mistake then if you've had enough sleep.

I agree. But I think this is something every common man (or woman) faces in their work lives.

The ability to do their job under less than perfect circumstances?

I was wondering if they were flying back to Manchester or arriving “down south” for the Southampton game.

Knownits a lot of traveling in short amount of days but will be something need to get use to if we progress

You’re assuming they would have slept ok had they stayed the night in Istanbul. Not necessarily.

Flights to and from Turkey always seem to be at silly times and is one of the many reasons I will not travel there.

Irrelevant. Burnley decided what time they wanted to fly back.

Dyche Out! Getting a plane home rather than staying overnight really is the straw that broke the Camel's back.

I may well be wrong but isn’t it common practice for most teams in Europe to do the same?

Yes I think you’re right. You hear a lot on commentaries that teams are going straight to the airport after games.

I’ve read loads of times players struggle sleeping after evening matches anyway. Might as well be flying home as lying awake on a bed in Istanbul.

It’s always surprised me that they travel back from Eastern Europe. They are not going to go in training so why not get your normal sleep and travel back in daylight.
It’s a known fact that sleep deprivation doesn’t catch up the next day but the day following so expect a penny line down the touchline for JBG to pop his head on.

If anyone has been running in the evening you'll know how difficult it can be to sleep after exercise when the adrenaline has started.

It's just unfortunate how the fixtures have fallen, with a long away game in Europe, followed by a long away game at Southampton, won't it be the same for the next round as well ? Long trip to Greece followed by a away game at Fulham. It would have been much easier if we were at home after being away in Europe.

It's Sean Dyche I'm worried for.... If Sean is suffering from "jet lag" or just tired from missing his sleep he might put out the wrong team.... or set them up with the wrong tactics. :( ;) ;)

dibraidio is right: "Sleep deprivation has a massive effect on your judgement and even though you might not notice you're much more likely to make a mistake then if you've had enough sleep."

We only need to read the posts on here in the "quiet hours of the night" or when thinking about the transfer window has been keeping us all awake.

I suspect the reason for some of the late night posts on here isn't sleep deprivation.

They travelled by private jet!

We decide where

Decent thread with decent discussion but because the original post held a critical view you cant help but get the odd poster who just cant handle an adult discussion about it.

Sopwith Camel? Wasn't that one of the first planes used by the British military? Was it called the Royal Army Flying Corp, before the RAF was formed in 1918?

They'd need a whole squadron, wouldn't they? Sopwith Camel only had 2 seats.

nah. they have seen a dead rat in front of their hotel. So they canceled traveling by camel. Rented a flying carpet instead

All this would be a damn serious issue, had we had to play Southampton yesterday.

Playing on a Saturday would be totally unjust and I've never heard of a team playing Saturday after a Thursday European game. I think it is unjust to play Sunday lunchtime also, it should at least be a 1700 kick off time to give a bit of extra recovery time. We effectively have Friday & Saturday to recover, travel and then play again Sunday morning/lunchtime.
Compare that to a Sat/Tues game which is the same amount of days in-between but much more time to recover with a 1700 finish on a Sat (instead of a 2100/2130 on Thursday) and then all day Sun,Mon & most of Tue (compared with all day Friday & Sat and a bit Sunday morning) There's at least 5/6 hours difference, which I imagine is quite a bit. If we played Sunday evening it would be similar to a Sat/Tues match.

Haha dry your eyes fella it was a lighthearted comment. If you want me to be serious then I see no issue with them coming straight home. Makes sense and sure they would have been able to relax on the plane and gives them more time back home to prepare for tomorrow. Happy now?

First used, IIRC, in 1917 by 70 Sqn. It was the Royal Flying Corps (RFC), using army personnel until, as you say, 1st April 1918 when they became the Royal Air Force (RAF). The Camel was a single seat fighter and was so named because of the ‘hump’ over the breaches of the twin Vickers machine guns. So, they would be pretty much useless as passenger aircraft in this day and age.

Hard to believe that the Clarets have chartered the same ‘team bus’ for a cup game in Europe that City used for their game with Basel in February. Who says we can’t compete with the big boys? 

Don’t know about the benefits/disadvantages of flying back immediately after the game but as Burnmark said it seems to be common practice that most teams do it.
Would be interesting to know whether the group dispersed and made their own merry ways to their homes on arriving back – ( landed back in Manchester just turned 4am) - or whether a hotel was arranged so they got a few hours sleep and then all got together again to prepare for this weekend’s game before travelling down there.

Think it would have made more sense to fly straight to Southampton to be honest.

Common practice after European away games for most clubs. Read an article on Wenger describing Arsenal' s logistics re Europe and they do indeed fly straight home following the game as the players are usually hyped up and discussing the game long into the night following a game and wouldn't sleep anyway. They will have the following day off. Back to training the day after.
