Bombers over Downham

Post by Archie Claret » Sun Aug 12, 2018 4:24 pm

I don’t see a post on this but did anyone else see a Lancaster Bomber fly overhead on Saturday afternoon.
I was mowing when suddenly this thing flew over very low indeed. I felt like I’d stepped into a WW2 film. Quite fantastic!
The same thing happened a couple of years ago with a Vulcan. I only wish I knew when they were coming!!

Was Forces day in Lincoln and the Lancaster flew overhead around lunchtime so probably went over parts of Norfolk also
A Dakota flew over Lincoln later and a Spitfire was also on Display in the grounds around Lincoln Cathedral
Amazing day yesterday

The Lancaster flew over Chatsworth yesterday and did a banked turn before flying back over us, it was nice of it to make a special effort for my birthday :-)

The red arrows fly over me on a regular basis as I live only a few miles from their base at Scampton

I saw it on the way back from the Clitheroe Food Festival halfway between Gisburn and Barrowford. Early afternoon. No escorts with it though, usually there is a spitfire and a hurricane, but not this time.

Apparently it was flying over the "Yanks" reunion at Uppermill And Dobcross

Lanc flew over some 1940s event in Darwen. Spit and Hurricane also there but appeared at a different time for some strange reason. Was looking out for the Red Arrows, but didn't see them. They must have crossed the Ribble Valley slightly to the North of their usual flight path. Flight was scheduled at 22 minutes from takeoff at Blackpool to touch down at Scampton. Once of those rascals would be ideal for travel to away games!

Edit: The Spit and Hurricane were apparently delayed by bad weather at some event in Ireland.

It was a bit murky on Saturday but this is enough to brighten up anyone of a certain vintage

An airworthy B-29 Superfortress warplane, similar to the ‘plane that dropped the nuclear bombs over Japan to end WW2 is on view Tuesday and Wednesday at Waterloo (Ontario) Airport as part of a Canada wide tour. I saw it overhead approaching the airport earlier today, so noisy. The airports a 10 minute drive from my home, I’m looking forward to seeing it the next couple of days and post some pictures if you guys are interested.

I was lucky enough to handle a lot of old aircraft in my last job in the RAF. My last see offs were the Spitfire and Hurricane. Loved it when BBMF came to my base. I know a few lads who still work there, including the boss and the Dakota pilot. I should get myself up there for the tour!

The 1940's event in Darwen must have been very futuristic for them. I bet the hid when the planes flew over.

I had the pleasure of viewing 'Fifi' the B-29 bomber on view at Waterloo Airport a couple days ago.

I hope this picture works!

Flew over my house last year. Couldn’t resist having a play in PhotoShop with one of the images (the dark one).

I'd like to see them, always interested in Lancs bombers as my Grandad was a pilot of them in WW2.

Some great shots lads....

Something very special about the BBMF. Hope to God it is maintained. These beautiful machines (the spitfire in particular- the most beautiful man made machine of ALL time) MUST be preserved.

An airworthy Lancaster bomber from Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton, Ontario will be flying alongside the B-29 bomber August 29th at Community Charity Airshow in Brantford, Ontario. I won’t be missing that opportunity to see two iconic aircraft!
