Maybe you already have but if not give a listen to Marvin Gaye's classic album What's Going On

It was voted the best Black album of all time

A Masterpiece IMO

Is this a total coincidence?
I Say A Little Prayer from Aretha and a mate of mine has just messaged that she is seriously ill.

Yes pb, sadly Aretha Franklin is very ill.

I saw the stories this morning, so no coincidence.

I've got most of Aretha's stuff from her first secular LP with the Ray Bryant Combo/Trio in 1961 onwards.

This is newish but well worth a listen.

So do we all mkmel.

She has never referred to herself as the Queen of Soul. A number of years ago whilst Aretha was with Gladys Knight a reporter, no doubt trying to cause a bit of mischief, asked them both who was the Queen of Soul and they both simultaneously answered and quite rightly in my view, Linda Jones.

The High Priestess of Soul is my favorite, particularly when playing the piano as well.

That has confused me a bit as your clip is for Nina Simone who is in fact a fantastic Jazz pianist. However Aretha did play piano on a lot of her stuff and was very accomplished.

Loved her version of First Cut is the Deepest. She has had quite a career though after starting as one of the Ikettes backing singers to Ike and Tina Turner

I was talking about Nina Simone which is why I said high priestess of soul rather than queen of soul.

Nina crossed genres Jazz Folk Soul Blues.

I know it was going away from the thread title.

Aretha Franklin

BBC news reporting she is seriously ill and receiving hospice care. Friends have been told she could die any day. Sad to lose that voice. Absolute legend.

A sad but inevitable day. What a musical legacy Aretha Franklin leaves. The best female singer I have ever heard, and what a performer... those songs from the 60’s and 70’s particularly, were of the highest quality... plenty of soul music fans on this forum, who will be feeling the loss. I feel like a part of my musical growing up just left the party and moved on.

We still have Stevie and a few others..thank God for that.

What a star.. RIP.
