Team for Thursday

Post by burnley007 » Tue Aug 14, 2018 12:15 pm

Any suggestions of who might be included in the squad?
Heaton or Hart??
Gibson to start?
full backs?
Barnes up front?
Walters?

I dont think heaton is registered to play . Like other posters keep saying . The number one spot now will be joe hart's unless he gets injured , suspended or makes any silly costly mistakes

I fully expect the same team as last Thursday.
Hart, Bardsley, Taylor and Walters included. There might even be a start for Gibson who was named in the squad.
We can have a lot stronger bench and hit them with it later if needed.
Time will tell.

I would expect either Barnes or Vokes to play up front with Wood and 442

Doesn't the squad for both legs have to be named before the first match, thus any new additions thereafter or players coming back from injury can't play until we get through the round?

Jack Cork never misses a game does he? Quite the engine on that lad.

Personally I'd go

Hart
Bardsley Long Gibson Taylor
Lennon Cork Hendrick Walters
Barnes Vokes

O'Neil
Westwood
Wood
JBG ( last resort )

In that order to come off the bench

3 points required Sunday, and has to be first priority, but think that side can put in a performance and get a result.

I don't see Dyche changing three of his back four and that could mean we see Taylor further up the pitch for some or all the game?

I'd guess something like this...

Hart
Bardsley Tarky Gibson Ward
Cork Westwood
Walters Barnes JBG
Vokes

Subs - Legzdins (spelling?), Lowton, Long, Mee, Taylor, Hendrick, Wood

The concerning pair are Cork and Westwood. We can't expect them to play 90 minutes in every PL and Europa game!!

------Hart (or Heaton)
Lowton Tarks Mee Taylor
Lennon Cork Hendrick JBG
--------Barnes Vokes

Hendrick for Westwood in midfield is partly to give Westwood a break, but partly to give us a midfielder who naturally drives and looks forward and can help us break the line.

Istanbul looked more than a little shaky defending the relatively few crosses we got into the box last week (both Tarks and Hendrick had good chances from fairly innocuous balls in) so the presence in the team of our 3 best available crosses - JBG, Lowton and Taylor is essential. Playing Barnes and Vokes as a partnership makes sense for that reason, too.

As per the thread yesterday, we've got to go strong. This is a chance to make memories and history, and with a perfectly adequate break before we play Watford on Sunday afternoon, and no travel to contend with like last week, there's no reason not to go all out. If anything, the biggest potential problem would be extra time (there will always be players who have to play both games), so going strong to avoid that is probably the best way to protect players anyway.

The players left out of the squad are Pope, Heaton, Defour, Wells, and Vydra.

no idea but at some point Cork and Westwood will need a break. At this stage of the season it’s not a problem and an international break not far off but as weak as we are currently in there we can’t flog them to death.
I’d go Barnes, Vydra and save Vokes & Wood for Sunday.

Totally agree that we should be prioritising Sunday's fixture but come Thursday I'll be willing them on to win that one, too. I think it's a lot easier said to prioritise than it is to carry it out.

Let me see.

If we win against Watford I will be happy for a few minutes.

If we win against Istanbul I will have the chance to take my kids on a European tour to Athens to play one of Europe's most successful sides.

Each to their own though.

As much as I'd like to see Gibson play, I think I'd prefer Tarks and Mee in to start - I can't see rotating the defence at this point in the season being a good thing. Plus we KNOW that Tarks and Mee works.

Hart
Lowton Tarks Mee Taylor
Lennon Hendrick Cork JBG
Barnes
Vokes

We need to create chances and score in this game and as stated in another post probably 2 goals. For this reason I hope we don't weaken too much or play Bardsley and Walters down the right. Istanbul were not short of technical ability and I don't think just graft and cloggers will be enough.

I would play our strongest team, similar to the one at Southampton. We are at home on Sunday and Thursday, so no extra travelling required, they are professional footballers, they should be fit enough.

You'd feel at least 1 goal, possibly 2 is needed to progress, starting with the same 11 as v Southampton makes that very unlikely.

442, none of this 4411 with a do a job being the creative link.

Hart
Lowton tarky Gibson Taylor
JBG Cork Westwood Lennon
Barnes
Wood

Big game, with a limited squad, this is a eleven which is good enough.
Think ‘we can mix it up’ with this eleven

Barnes and Vokes need game time, as does Taylor and Gibson.

Vydra should be playing soon which would give one of the midfielders a break. JBG might need a rest after the world cup etc...

I said similar to the one at Southampton. I would preferably play Wood and Barnes up front from the start, but will Sean do that. I was intimating that we shouldn't be considering the likes of Bardsley or Walters etc.

I agree, apparently these lot are at their best on the counter attack.
We don't want to fall behind against these, they're Leicester esc from a couple of seasons ago.

A classic set play goal ( should we not kick it straight out, or play it back 40 yards before hitting it in row Z) and then let them break us down.
We are great when we go 1 up at getting the required result.

I wouldn't play JBG, he looks like he needs a rest and he is far too important to burn out, I'd be reluctant to name him on the bench but we might need him.

...................Hart
Lowton Tarks Mee Taylor
JBG Westwood Cork Hendrick
............Barnes Vokes

Bardsley is a good defender but poses no attacking threat.

Wood to replace Barnes or Vokes around 65 minutes.

I think we need to be very careful in this game. They are probably very happy with a home 0-0 as they are a counter-attacking side who will try to pick us off if we over-commit in attack.
Hart,
Bardsley, Tarkowski, Mee, Ward,
Walters, Cork, Westwood, Hendrick, Taylor,
Barnes

I think he'll bring Bardsley & Taylor back in and could include Gibson. Suspect it might be Barnes or Vokes rather than Wood up front.

With an international break coming up I think it gives us chance to put out a stronger team to try and ensure we get the job done without the need for extra time.

It could be those that potentially will get game time that will be rested tonight. So maybe something like:

Hart
Lowton Gibson Mee Taylor
Lennon Cork Westwood Walters
Hendrick
Vokes

Ledgzins
JBG
Barnes
Wood
Tarks
Ward
Bardsley

Think its definitely a game for playing two up front, and getting the ball wide, fairly early. I think we're more vulnerable to the counter attack sometimes where we play 1 up front and play a bit more football, because sometimes we get drawn into over committing.

Istanbul looked dodgy in the air, so playing 2 up front exploits that, and it also allows us the option of playing plenty of long diagonals, and getting the ball wide early, which may well aim at their softer underbelly.

I'd like to see 442 also, and hoping a for a good game from Lennon. He threatened against Aberdeen but his end product was lacking a bit, hopefully he'll create something decisive. I'd save Barnes for the weekend, and give Walters a chance to push further up the pitch tonight. He did a good job as a defensive right sided midfielder last week, and deserves a chance to get in and around the box. Vokes is brilliant if you get quality into the box early, so hoping JBG provides this. Would love this to be over after an hour (in our favour, of course) so we can rest a few of the midfield.

Walters
Walters Walters Walters Walters
Walters Walters Walters Walters
Walters Walters

Just imagine the experience, know how, professionalism and application a team like this would offer....we would be unbeatable

Just checked their team from Sunday and Adebayor was in the squad, came off the bench.

No Turan still.

The beat Trabonspor (however its spelt) , who featured a 33 year old Hugo Rodallega up front

We don't necessarily need to be long, but we need good balls in the box from good wide positions (as spice also said) Although I picked bardsley initially perhaps lowton would be a better shout for this one. If we're not getting near the byline his crosses from deep are decent.

I expect us to go same again as last Thursday. Just pray it will be enough.

Spice has got most of this right, Lennon and Taylor to provide some width. Unfortunately I can see a midfield lacking Cork's energy getting done badly.

What's wrong with it? Hart starting is obvious, apart from those who still keep choosing Heaton.
Gibson and Long are't crap. Ward is starting.
Westwood and Hendrick in the middle is fine
Lennon right
Taylor left, who we know can put a superb ball in, to Vokes.
Barnes and Vokes

It's a balanced side, whilst at the same time keeping an eye on Sunday's game. I think he's done right.
