Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
18th of May 1982
I made my way to Turf Moor in anticipation that would see plenty of goals it was our last game of the season having already clinched promotion at Roots Hall winning 1-4 on the Friday
It was another evening kickoff a win and the third division title was ours it was pelting it down with massive ques of supporters trying to get into the ground so large was the crowd they had to delay kickoff for 20 minutes.
Id had enough and decided I was going into the away end, word soon travelled round that Chesterfield had not brought any supporters so half the crowd at the turnstiles also headed for the away end, the game looked in doubt as it was so torrencial big puddles where starting to lay on the surface. This was the first time this has happened being in that part of the longside and it also happened against Wrexham and Hull before they brought the famous old end to its knees
As the game got underway It was thought they might be a few away fans dotted about in the Cricketfield stand, the allocated away end on the Longside was full to bursting with home fans having the banter with the Longside making the atmosphere like we was the away fans.
The game ended 1-1 kevin young got our goal just after the restart of the second half the draw meant we would have to wait 24 hours to be crowned Champions as it was posible that Carlisle could better our goal difference but had to keep a clean sheet and score seven to pipe us to the title which was very unlikely not like the Norwich v Stockport for the goal difference for us to make the playoffs and Stockport had the keeper sent off in the first five minutes.
So this game was the lowest of away support Burnley v Chesterfield 1982 i have witness tomorrow could be similar but also we could be surprised but doubt it UTC

In 1991 we played a Russian team in a friendly and they didn't bring any.
When we scored the shout went up of 'Your not singing anymore'.

There were 4 in the away end in our worst ever season against Torquay 86/87.

I remember counting Wimbledon fans in about 2001. I think they brought 37 off memory.

In 87/88 Hereford United brought 4 to the Turf for a Saturday pm game in December. I'm sure they enjoyed the 0-0 draw.

It was 3 for the Torquay game. One from London, one from the wrong end of the M65 and the third was Gary Heaton, who was a year above me at school in Nelson. I think there may have been 6 Police in there too, as it was the minimum allocation for away fans.South West Claret. wrote:There were 4 in the away end in our worst ever season against Torquay 86/87.

I believe on hearing that our support at a Chelsea v Burnley when they moved the game to mid week day match in the sixties that 3 supporters went and that was debatable.
Not sure on figures but the European tour of the sixties i would of thought would have been quite low especially that hostile game in Napoli

I think there was less than 50 travelling supporters on Wimbledon's last visit to Turf Moor.
Millwall fans were banned one year.

The Millwall fans where ban from every ground that season, Cardiff Leeds and our selfs have been band from certain games.
But we still manged to get quite a few in at Torquay
I wouldn't have thought many would have gone Celtic in the Anglo Scottish either.

I remember the Torquay game, I think a couple of locals went in just to bolster there numbers. There was certainly half a dozen or so.

In modern times, Wigan’s support a few years ago was miserable
Re: Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
When we played Millwall and they were banned from visiting instantly came to mind for me.
Re: Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
Torquay and Luton both banned away fans one season but I got into both.
I also went to Celtic Park
don't think the turks will turn up

Considering it was a Prem game, and the proximity of Wigan , it was pitiful.

Stoke always were the best away supporters apart from the big city clubs. And very noisy.

As a fledgling supporter back in the 1970s my grandad regularly took me in the away end of the Longside if it was a midweek match and not many away fans were expected to travel.
One game against Bristol Rovers there was myself, my grandad and 4 visiting fans

Re: Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
On THAT last game in 1987 did we not move the Orient fans into the CFS so we could have the whole of the Longside?
I'm sure there were only 4 of them.
Or have I imagined all of that?

I thought they brought about 1500 or so they were one of the better supported division 4 clubs at that time. But i could be completely wrong there was some confusion about the official attendance that day.tybfc wrote:On THAT last game in 1987 did we not move the Orient fans into the CFS so we could have the whole of the Longside?

Yes, you have imagined it, or misremembered it. Orient fans were on the other side of the No Mans Land - see pictybfc wrote:On THAT last game in 1987 did we not move the Orient fans into the CFS so we could have the whole of the Longside?

I don't think there would be suitable access in no man's land and probably not included in the safety certificate for fans.

Re: Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
I would like to know the true crowded against Wrexham the away end held 5000 longside when packed held 10,000 the bee hole held 5000 plus then the two stands were full 28,000 i make it when ground was full in them days but they always gave it around the 18,000 mark i think the turnstiles could not count past that figure

Yer I know but you could easily get 30,000 on as we so against Celtic even though yet again the crowd was given at 18,000 plusQuickenthetempo wrote:The ground only held 22500 when the terracing was still there.
Same against Wednesday in the quarter final in 83 they never gave the true attendance
Went to loads of grounds that used to do the same Wrexham away 3,000 Burnley fans when Graham Lancashire got an hatrick 2-6 win crowd was given 3,161
Re: Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
Went to a Tuesday night, end of season game against Newcastle united, very late 70s or early 80s. No more than a a couple of dozen at the most. So much for your 'toon army' those days.
Re: Smallest Away Support You Have Seen On The Turf
Club have just announced that the away section will be closed tomorrow and no tickets will be available to any local Turkish fans to buy.

The Millwall fans were only banned from one ground and that was ours.
