Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
Thought I’d start a thread ahead of this weeks trip to Athens to see where people will be meeting/drinking on Wednesday night?
Would meeting at the suggested area for Thursday (Magemenos Avlos Aminta) be a good idea to go there on Wednesday evening too?
Any and all suggestions welcome as it would be good to have us together again like we were in Istanbul but on the Wednesday night too for those landing the day before.

A thread was started about this a few days ago, but I don't think any suggestions were added.

Piraeus is about 8km away from the meeting point, I'd booked there originally, cancelled and rebooked in Plaka near Syntagma square. Fly in Wednesday afternoon and happy to meet if something could be sorted.

Maybe have a look at James Joyce Irish Pub just off Monastiraki, they have sports screens as well as food and good beers.
Avoid Omonia Square, and keep your money safe if you use the metro!!!
Apart from that , Athens is amazing!

It's only about 5 minutes away from the pick your tickets up point and just around the corner from the airport.Barry_Chuckle wrote:Piraeus is about 8km away from the meeting point, I'd booked there originally, cancelled and rebooked in Plaka near Syntagma square. Looks like Syntagma Square could be a good shout then for Wednesday night. We land at 7pm and are staying at the Best Western Plus Embassy which is about a 10 minute taxi ride away so not too far.

I land at 3am on the Thursday. Dare I pop down and see how you’re all getting on?

Are people just heading to the area advised by the club for Thursday? Should be in town for about 4 as land at 1430, booked a taxi in to hotel which is 2 mins from ticket collection hotel.

I'll be there, travelling solo for this one due to usual companions unable to get time off work. The joy of retirement thankfully for me.1989_claret wrote:Looks like Syntagma Square could be a good shout then for Wednesday night. Yes imagine people will just drink around ticket collection/meeting area Thursday as per Istanbul.mybloodisclaret wrote:Are people just heading to the area advised by the club for Thursday? We land at 9 p.m. on Wednesday - we'll certainly be looking to get to Magemenos Avlos Aminta on the Thursday but not sure we'll make anything on the Wednesday.

Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
I land tomorrow evening on my tod and am staying in Plaka. I’m planning to grab some food at Athena’s Cook near Syntagma (formerly Athens Beer) and may wander up to Beertime too (on the way up to Omonia Square but hopefully we’ll before the dodgy part). Wednesday I’ll be blitzing some of the sights (never done them), similar stuff Wednesday night (a chance one or two people I know could be arriving by then) and only Thursday afternoon will I head towards the meeting point (feels like we are stuck out of the way deliberately up there). I plan on getting the Metro to the game rather than official transport - a chance to walk around the ground. Will get the bus back though. Hopefully I’ll see a few fellow Clarets along the way

Fair play if you want to get the metro to the ground on your own but I will say the club’s transport and organization for Istanbul was brilliant to and from the ground.CrosspoolClarets wrote:I land tomorrow evening on my tod and am staying in Plaka. Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
Owing to being on a plane elsewhere in the world..for the worst timed holiday ever...whilst the game is on I can't go. However I know Athens reasonably well and wouldn't see Syntagma Square as a great spot. Much livelier around Monastiraki . Syntagma is a big open square with the parliament building at the top end and a tube station in the middle but not the best for a pre-match pint and sing-song. Having said that I don't know the Athens beer place referred to just above which is evidently nearby.

Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
I was thinking of going to the ground by metro as well just to have a bit of time around the ground to take some photos and maybe meet some locals for a beer. Will we be free once we've arrived or will they just pen us in and shove us into the ground?1989_claret wrote:Fair play if you want to get the metro to the ground on your own but I will say the club’s transport and organization for Istanbul was brilliant to and from the ground.

Burnleybabe et al, yes I am on the 0610 from Luton. Looks like there will be a decent crowd on that plane!!
Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
Istanbul you had to go straight in. To be fair there was nothing near by and because of the traffic, we weren’t there stupidly early.diamondpocket wrote:I was thinking of going to the ground by metro as well just to have a bit of time around the ground to take some photos and maybe meet some locals for a beer. Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
Yes, hats off to the club, but the bus point is not where I am staying and I am also guessing it will be getting there very early and we will be funnelled straight in. I may change my mind but will chat to a few Olympiacos fans first and see what they say is the norm in European games.1989_claret wrote:Fair play if you want to get the metro to the ground on your own but I will say the club’s transport and organization for Istanbul was brilliant to and from the ground.
Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point
I’m travelling on my tod via Frankfurt and will arrive in Athens early afternoon on Wednesday, staying near to the Monastiraki square. Plan to find other fans for a drink/food on Wednesday evening.
Re: Athens: Wednesday night meeting/drinking point

Oh some realistic ones will be there that's for sure...It is not 'moaning' as you put it when folk have concerns as to where the goals are going to come from.SussexDon1inIreland wrote:Hopefully you will not be getting all those 'moaners' following our Watford defeat showing up in Athens!

Me and the lad arrive tomorrow (Wednesday) mid afternoon, 7.15am out of Manchester via Munich.
The James Joyce Irish Pub just off Monastiraki, looks a good shout for Wednesday night with sports screens, food and beer. Not far from the Monastiraki metro station.
Planning on having a couple of beers at the meeting point on Thursday, but want to sample the pre game atmosphere in and around the ground, as diamondpocket below.

Two options seem to be the most popular with Syntagma Square being one and Monastiraki the other.

The James Joyce looks a decent shout , only 15 mins on metro right outside the ground from there too .Syntagma doesn’t have that much going on really . Lad and I are gonna get the metro as don’t fancy being herded right in ( and early too )without a sample of the atmosphere . Was in Athens 2 yrs ago and the metro is cheap and v easy to get around on.
