My Dad’s favourite player also.

Met him outside the old post office once and he was polite, unassuming and a gentleman. Today’s players could learn a lot from him in regards to humility and respect.

RIP legend

Very sad news some say a player cant be bigger than the club but in Jimmy's case he was a legend and very well respected he was a icon
When he was sold to Stork City a good percentage of fans vowed never to return thats how big a player he was for this club
RIP Jimmy a Burnley Football Club legend

I had the pleasure of meeting and chatting with him a number of times. He was genial, dryly funny, charming, and sincerely self effacing in his modesty. I never saw him play, but I feel somewhat blessed to have this wonderful sportsman and human being associated forever with the football club I support.
Goodnight Jimmy.

Heard he once turned down a move to sampdoria and a villa on the med because Burnley had everything he and his wife would ever want or need 8-)

Very sad news indeed. The term "Legend" is used all-too-often these days but without doubt Jimmy really is a true "legend". RIP Mr Burnley.

Lucky enough to both watch him play and meet him outside of football. A true gentleman.

I just assumed he would go on for ever.

Sad loss.

If they ever invent time travel seeing him play for Burnley would be the first journey I'd book.

RIP Jimmy Mc.

Also, if they decide to have a minute's applause (and I hope they don't) I will be standing in respectful silence.

As many others on here i was privileged to see him play and he was a true great in every sense of the word.
Magnificent footballer , a great representative of Northern Ireland and a lovely man. If ever i bumped into him in Sainsbury's in Burnley he always had a smile and a kind word.
Very sad this morning. We have lost a legendary figure.

I never saw him play. My granda would tell me about him, having watched him for Northern Ireland. I did have the privilege of meeting him just the once, at the Oval in 2008. He was a gentleman. I often wondered how he was doing, most recently just last week when I was out walking my dog and walked past Danny Blanchflower's house on Grace Avenue. I looked up to read the blue plaque and thought of Jimmy and that 58 squad.

Obviously, at 31 I never had the privilege to see him play, but the stories you hear and the clips you can see are what will keep his legend alive long past any of us.

Again, too young to have seen him in Claret and Blue ....
Met him several times in his later days, always had a twinkle in his eye, and a ready smile... lovely man

I remember reading Sir Stanley Matthews' Autobiography, and a chapter relating to players he'd played with and against. Of Jimmy McIlroy, he wrote .." they say some players can make the ball talk, McIlroy could make it recite Shakespeare ! "

God Bless, Jimmy !!

My dad's favourite player too....he has dementia now but mention Jimmy McIlroy and his face lights up and he will say "By goff 'e were a good 'un !". Imagine having the ability to leave that kind of impression on thousands of people.....fantastic.

A very sad day for all us Clarets of whatever age.

RIP Jimmy Mac. My thoughts are with his family on this sad, sad day for all of us. Every club has its ultimate hero Jimmy was ours. Even like me if you never got to see him play.... we had parents that did. I have been privileged to meet Jimmy several times over my years following Burnley and like many others was struck by the genuine warmth and humility he had. Just a lovely lovely man. It is no secret he has suffered in recent years and I only hope his nearest and dearest can find some solace that he is at last free from pain. God Bless you Jimmy xx
