Jimmy Mac v Rovers.. crowd!!
Saw this photo yesterday while looking up stuff about Jimmy Mac. How good does the crowd look? Anyone know when this might be? When was the Bee Hole extended?

The Beehole was extended much later than this. At least, the extension to it that I am thinking about was done in the 70s. It affected the right side of the terrace mostly.
Hell of a crowd at the Turf that day. It looks superb.

I think that could be the FA cup game that ended up 3-3.

Around 54,000, 3-0 up with 18 minutes to go and drew!
Similar crowd in replay in previous round against Bradford - won 5-0 and Bob Lord charged kids full prices!

I don't think Bob Lord charged full price for kids but he certainly increased the price, I think, from 1/3 by sixpence. I'd gone with my Dad so he was able to give me the extra money but there were some on their own who, at first, couldn't get in. There was at least one policeman giving out sixpences.burnleypudding wrote:Around 54,000, 3-0 up with 18 minutes to go and drew!

There were obviously complaints and it was said that Lord Bob replied to that children should be in bed at that time( evening replay, I think).
My dad wrote to him complaining and actually received an apology from Bob Lord. He kept that letter for years. It disappeared after my dad died, probably thrown out by my mother who didn't appreciate the uniqueness of a written apology from Bob Lord!

Think you could be right with that. We played them.the week before in a league game at Turf Moor with around 20,000 less than the almost 52,000 for the cup game. No segregation then; I was very fortunate to be allowed to go with such a big crowd(just short of my 8th birthday) but I went with my oldest brother and we had tickets in the main stand where it was deemed I would be able to see better and not have need to stand on a stool.winsomeyen wrote:I think that could be the FA cup game that ended up 3-3.

I was also on the 3-3 draw at the Turf. I still say it was never a penalty, which led to their come back. I went to the replay at Ewood as well, the first time I had been to an away match on my own (without my mum and dad). It only seems like yesterday.

Same here regarding 'it only seems like yesterday'. Remember our goals, all scored down at the Cricket Field End, happened quickly at the start of the 2nd half and then,as you say, a very dubious penalty awarded against Alex Elder with less than 20 mins. remaining. Oh dear!

What a photo. If I were on Facebook, that would be my new background picture. Proud to be a Claret, looking at that.

The club increased the admission price for FA Cup games from the turn of the century. The cup was the main money spinner in those days. Burnley Doubled the prices for adults from 6d to a shilling.

Bit further away than India...Suratthani in south Thailand. It's often abbreviated to Surat though.Stayingup wrote:Your name Surat? Anything to do with Surat in Gujarat?

No. Mike England played for them a few years later. Matt Woods was their centre half that day. The time England was 'shoved up front' was,I think, the time they unexpectedly beat us 1-4 at home around 1965?Guitargeorge wrote:Was that the game when they shoved Mike England up front?

Re: Jimmy Mac v Rovers.. crowd!!
I was on this game, possibly a speck on this photo as I was on the BeeHole end near the front (my earlier games were in the "enclosure" in front of the grandstand with my dad & I later graduated to the cricketfield end).
The main thing I remember from this game (other than the disappointment of the comeback) was seeing Derek Dougan for the first time. I think he may've had his silly haircut by then - he made an impression on me anyway.
I daresay the famous trio of Clayton, Dobing, Douglas were on the Rovers team to but The Doug is the one I can recall from their team.
