Away goal and only 2 goals to get.... should not be out of the question back at the Turf. Our lack of form is getting a little worrying. I know we traditionally start the season slowly, but still seems very little spark at the moment.

That’s why most managers especially Dyche don’t change them! They need to be a well oiled, in tune unit. You need your spine at the very least. The first goal Heaton was marshaling an unfamiliar line and was never happy. 2nd goal Gibson seemed to be covering for Taylor, who isn’t the regular left back. The penalty you could call unlucky. But our defense which we can usually depend on has not met their usual high standards in 2 back to back games. Coincidence?!Nonayforever wrote:Changing the back 5 has FA to do with a defender deliberately handballing and elbowing a forward off the ball.

We were well beaten by a team thrown together over the last few months.
I wouldn’t be surprised if they beat us in the second leg as well. We’ve started the season just like we ended the last one.

I thought we were excellent in the first half especially after they scored.
Sucker punch for them to get two quick goals in succession and us a red card but after that we closed up shop and were unlucky not to get a second.
Not going to be easy in the 2nd leg but certainly not out of reach.

both definite pens, extraordinarily rare to not be booked for handball in the box for the last 10 years - ref didn't really have a choiceDark Cloud wrote:Our penalty was a tad soft and their's was a pi**ing joke!! Sums it up succinctly Steddyman,an early goal at the turf will put us right back in the tie, important not to concede again in the final half-hour,gives us a chance still,be tough though.Steddyman wrote:I thought we were excellent in the first half especially after they scored.

I thought we were good in the first half
Too slow off the blocks in the second and no problem with the pen, but the two yellows for Gibson were harsh.

Thought we played one decent half again. Seems all we can manage at the moment. Started the 2nd half slowly just like against Watford and it cost us again. Defence looks shaky from set plays at the moment whoever is playing and overall not as solid as last season. Not sure why. Second half were outclassed by a better team on the night. We were lucky it was not 4 or 5. At least we have a chance now at the Turf. 2 is possible, 3 0 would have been very unlikely. We need to play our strongest team though or we will be out. That lot tonight won't cut it. We are desperate for creativity. Without Defour we struggle for any sort of transition from midfield to attack. Hopefully Vydra and Brady will improve things in the next few games.

It will be tough and I think we will need to score early. If we are huffing and puffing at 60 minutes at 0-0 that will be it. It is not impossible though and we have a chance. At 4-1 down we wouldn't have. I fancy them to score at Turf Moor if we don't play the regular tested back four.BurnleyFC wrote:We won’t score 2 at Turf Moor when we never manage a ******* shot.

Re: Olympiakos v Burnley
Disappointed as anybody else on here that we couldn't keep the deficit to just one goal but we still have a chance if we can up our performance at Turf and get an early goal. We still have to keep things tight at Turf and with Dyche's game management tactics he would still feel we are in with a shout if its 0-0 well into the second half. I usually get mad at refereeing decisions but I dont think we can have too much to complain about tonight really. The Gibson bookings were a bit soft but all 3 goals came from naive challenges / handball situations which in another game might've been avoided?
I generally enjoy catching up with Clarets news on here and there are some great threads and informative and amusing comments from some fantastic Burnley supporters. However most visits now end with me shaking my head in disbelief at some of the deliberately provocative negative comments from people who might as well support our opponents each week. Constructive criticism is to be expected and even pessimism as life is like that with everyone having different outlooks. As one of them said above "Don’t read the board if it bothers you that much". He is right I wont. Maybe I'm the naive one logging on here to read interesting views and turning off when quality threads turn into childish squabbles. Clarets Mad got like this so I stopped visiting. As he says maybe message boards aren't for me either.

We were the better team first half and like everyone else I thought we started to slowly in the second. Overall I thought the ref had a decent game although Gibson 1st yellow was harsh. Linesmen got it wrong with wood through on goal. Pleased Wood got the penalty hopefully he can kick on from there and we shouldn't male the same stupid defensive errors at the turf.

Disappointing result, but we live and breathe. We need to make some noise next Thursday, the players aren't going to turn this without us.
For the Trolls, you know who you are, everyone is disappointed, not everyone is blaming the manager, blaming the tactics, blaming individual players. If you can't take a defeat without spitting your dummies football, and in particular Burnley, aren't for you. You could try supporting Citeh, a VERY successful team who rarely lose.
Coming on board to share your disappointment is fine, coming on here to spout your anger and bile is childish and serves no purpose other than to **** off other users. We are Burnley not Barcelona, defeat is an occupational hazard, it requires little inquest.

Wow I haven’t seen the game or listened any of it but I guess it was difficult and I expected us too lose but had hoped we would score. Let’s be clear we aren’t playing European minnows here they had won there League 7 times on the trot up till last season. I listened to a Greek Football expert earlier this Week and when asked about playing Burnley his response was Olympiacos HAVE to reach the group stages there are no other options. Said it all too me not seen the teams but my impression is that they would play there first team while we will play a team that maybe half are our normal first team. We could overturn this deficit if we prioritize the second leg I don’t think we will sadly the teams we have picked in pretty every game in the comp suggests as much. I don’t agree I think we should live in the here and now and try and go as far as possible but i’m Not going to argue with the decision that is made we all have too make choices and not all you agree with.

To put tonight into some perspective this from the BBC HYS- :That team has beaten Liverpool, Arsenal (3 times), Manchester United, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Juventus, just to name a few, at the same ground over the last few years in the Champions League. Learn your facts.:
That's a formidable home record, however they are dogger away, especially in England, which gives us half a shout with the away goal.

Re: Olympiakos v Burnley
I thought the lads did reasonably well overall. They put in a solid first half, dipped when they came out for the second and then dug deep to keep them at bay with 10 men. We seemed to be pretty evenly matched and its often said that a moment of quality can separate two sides in such games. However, it is also true that moments of sloppy inadequacy can make a big difference as well.
That was our undoing. We gift wrapped the opportunities for all three of their goals. The free kick off Bardsley (aided by the wall building farrago), the free kick leading to a header for their second and then the hand it over penalty that lead to their third. The sending off was a bit harsh, but being on a yellow Gibson should have been a little more restrained and savvy.
The game was very similar to the Watford game in that we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory because we made a couple of silly errors that proved to be very costly. If we can tighten things up a bit and add some goals then we could do well this season.
I thought Kevin Long had another good game. He looked very tidy and made a couple of excellent interventions.
Its a tough result to take and hopefully some important lessons have been learned. That extra goal they nicked from the penalty leaves us with an uphill climb, but it's not beyond us. We always seem to play better when we are up against it or we are being labelled as the underdogs.
Our seventh placed finish was very well deserved last season, but we haven't established ourselves as the perenial best of the rest team yet. We are starting out from scratch again this season with everything to prove and a couple of heavy wake up calls might be just what we need to kick on and move forward.
