Ashley Barnes

Post by cricketfieldclarets » Sun Aug 26, 2018 3:48 pm

What has he done to be behind Hendrick again today?

He was easily our best player on Thursday, especially first half. And wood is twice the player alongside him.

Last season they were an outstanding partnership.

Obviously be happy to be proved wrong at 90 mins today. But hendrick and wood seems a very negative setup. Barnes in that role offers far more than hendrick. Closes down more. Has a better touch. Wins more free kicks. Creates more space. And ultimately has a hand in far more goals.

It took time for me to appreciate him so hopefuly same for Jeff, but Barnes is by far our most improved player year on year and probably our most dangerous forward.

SD wants that halfway man. More of a fifth midfielder than a second striker.
Nothing to do with Barnes performance. Away from home it’s the way we roll.

I thought so yes.

Good to see Hendrick off the mark today. How did he play to those there?

Wood was anonymous like the other two strikers when they came on which suggest the quality into the forward line simply isn't anywhere near good enough and the lack of support for the striker is shockingly bad.

Hendrick was our best player today in what was an awful performance.

He is useless as a lone front man. Because he isnt a lone front man.

Definitely need Barnes back up alongside him soon.

I was surprised that Wood started the match in front of Ash, but that may well have been due to Thursday's match in mind.

However, the style of play changed when Vokes and Ash came on giving them nothing to work with.

Hendrick has been our best player in the last two PL games so rightly keeps Barnes out.

Wood isn't a lone striker and never will be. I'd argue Vokes is the man to start as the lone striker, especially if our only out ball is hoofed towards him by the back four.

Why play with a lone striker in the first place? Our successful promotion seasons and PL seasons have been with 442. Why change a winning formula?

Agree. Also with Barnes up top we give them a lot more to think about and make it harder for them to play out.

If we are playing 1 up top I would have Barnes over Wood every time, Wood just doesn't hold the ball up well enough for me.

Because we were 4th in the Premier league playing a 4-5-1 up to December. Agree that with Brady and JBG out our wingers aren’t good enough. JBG has been woeful this season anyway playing on the left. Him and Lennon need switching when both fit ASAP
