That was better

Post by Right_winger » Thu Aug 30, 2018 9:38 pm

Quite impressed with us tonight,

On another day could have knocked 6 passed them.
Just need to find out shooting boots for the league now.

No lack of effort, but let’s now move on to focusing on the Premier League

I thought it pretty awful tbf. Yes we created “chances”. But they looked far far more threatening when they had the ball. Their composure was light years ahead of ours

Played very well in nearly all areas of the pitch.

Unfortunately I don’t recall watching us miss so many chances before. I’m not sure how you help your strikers find form, but we need to quickly find a way.

Hendrick as I’ve said so many times is a different player in the middle!
Taylor should start at full back
Vydra up with wood
Much better clarets
Good effort

How was there composure better. They still only scored only one goal like us. And "chances" on another day that would of been five

You thought it was awful?

We absolutely battered them and should have won by 3 or 4 goals

Best performance of the season and on another day we would be through. Proud of that performance and effort and although disappointed to go out, it may be for the best considering injuries.

Some very good individual performances too and McNeill should take a hell of a lot of confidence from that.

When the received the ball they were calm, composed. Found teammates with ease. Quick decisive on the break. I lost count how many poor short passes we gave away easily. The effort was there. I dont doubt that for a minute. But our quality is shocking.

They big booted it more than we did against Fulham on Sunday.

I agree about quality but from tonight I wanted them players to give their all and leave the pitch with their confidence back. I think we saw that. Just hope the players coming back in on Sunday carry that on.

Brilliant tonight and one goal in first hour and I think we'd have had them. Loved every minute (well almost) of this European tour so now lets take tonights performance into the league after the International break and get ourselves into mid table

Beat Burton in the cup and we're back on the road to Europe again!!

I thought we were fantastic, a real tempo to our play that we haven't seen for quite some time. That was real mixed football, effective and exciting, I can't remember the last time we created so many chances in a game. Ultimately gutted we lost out, a shame we didn't get at them away from home. Many positives, hard one to swallow and we were screwed with the draw really, we drew the hardest possible side in the first 2 rounds and probably the 2nd toughest tie in the final qualifying game. Proud display and should certainly restore some optimism/confidence back into the players/fans.

It was a hell of a lot better with key players stepping up but the number of times we got ourselves into trouble when turning back was frightening. Possibly lack of understanding in a scratch team but needs working on. Within the squad all the calls should be the same.

Have lost my voice shouting for Lennon to move up the wing to receive the ball and take their full back on.He doesn't give our players an option to pass forward.
Apart from that well done lads on another day we would have had 3 or 4 goals.UTC

Lennon looks devoid of confidence to me. He should have hit the ball first time instead of trying to lay it off. Just doesn’t seem to have it to go by his man anymore for whatever reason.

We were very good but it shows how bad Olympiacos are, at times at walking pace. A full strength side home and away would have hammered them, and would probably not have conceded.

The two selections I have a problem with are Bardsley and Long. Bardsley didn’t put a single quality delivery in, whereas Lowton is famed for them. Long made the crucial error, Tarkowski would not have. The rest I was happy with the selections, McNeill was very good and I wish he had played last week ahead of Taylor.

I appreciate some people set a much lower bar for Burnley (and probably themselves) than I do, as evidenced by the abuse I get for criticising our team selection, but it is Dyche’s choice that we are not in the group stages. If Dyche had chosen to, we would be there. Obviously some will agree with him, and some will not. The former think the Premier League is everything, the latter think this competition was the most exciting thing to happen to Burnley for many, many years,

By definition, it means the “one club mentality” with most fans, the board and the manager aligned, will probably come to an end. That’s why I think it was a monumental error in team selection and prioritisation.

Let down by our strikers tonight. As popular as they are Barnes and Vokes just aren't good enough at this level.

Cant understand why people would 'fish' and slag that performance off.

Deary me.

Since when did 'look at me' come at the cost of knocking that level of effort.

Bit harsh. Vokesy’s first one was a bad miss, Vydra’s one was a bad miss and Lennon inexplicably passed when he should have shot.

All the other chances were unlucky IMO...

Thought apart from the missed chances Vokes didn't play too bad. Barnes looked miles out of his depth to me, offered us nothing whatsoever tonight and needs a spell on the bench.

That's the best I have seen us play for a long time, apart from the missed chances we should have been in the group stages but so what, now we can go again in the PL starting with a win against MU

Better performance against a poor side. We played more football tonight than we have all season, but for Vokes misses we would have gone through no problems.

McNeil was excellent, what a delivery. Westwood had a good game for a change to.

United on Sunday will be a different proposition though. We need to get back to basics and there is no better way than keeping a clean sheet on Sunday against one of the best sides in the world

Much improved performance tonight against a seasoned European side, where we moved the ball quickly and created a good number of chances, and acted like the home side.

I’ve therefore no doubt that we’ll do the same against Bournemouth in a few weeks.........

Vokes played great. Won everything in the air. Unlucky with the shot and one bad miss and one instinctive header from a flick on that was unlucky.

Barnes wasn’t as good as he was in Greece

Sorry, Crosspool, I've got to disagree with your key points.

Sean Dyche has to pick from the squad we have available, both for the Europa and the Premier League. My feeling was that tonight he picked a good side that gave it a go. Of course, would have been great if one or more chances had gone in in the first half or early in the second.....

Kevin Long did nothing wrong in tonight's game - he did not make a "crucial error," rather their forward did what forwards should do in that position.

I'm lost on why the "one club mentaility" with most fans, the board and the manager aligned, will probably come to an end...." Why?

The club overachieved last season. I'm sure 7th was higher than anyone expected us to finish. We've played in Europa - and don't forget that some seasons 7th wouldn't be in Europa. So, we've had a short "European tour." Let's see how we get on this season. No reason to feel concerned, we will do well.

And, who knows, maybe in a season or two we will qualify for Europe again, maybe with a stronger and deeper squad and maybe we will overachieve again.
