hijacked phone number

Post by mdd2 » Fri Aug 31, 2018 10:46 am

Just had a call from a number advising that my IP address has been hijacked and as per usual I put the phone down. However I have now had about 6 UK calls from callers advising that I have just called their number when clearly i haven't.
Anyone else had something like this happening. Apart from p*****g off me and the other callers, what's the point?

Sounds like plenty of people or voice recording into the scam.

Just keep blocking their numbers.

Mdd2, are you with BT? I remember something similar regarding a BT Engineer calling to say the same thing.

I had my mobile number copied. Mobile operator was useless and insisted it wasn't possible, despite the evidence to the contrary. It eventually seemed to stop.

If you get another call, I'd wait to see what they say. Just don't open up any apps if they ask you to - in fact, don't do anything they ask you to, you'll just get an idea of which scam it is.

Be careful, a friend of mine was told by his son that when he called him it went to Orange answer phone even
though he was with Vodafone .. within days his bank details had been hijacked and just over £3,000 out of
pocket ..

You're probably going to have to fork out for a new number because it sound like yours has been spoofed. If so then getting renumbered is really the only solution. It costs about £25, and no, it probably won't be waived.

It's hard to tell as he put the phone down.

He would need to hear what the person on the other line said first. The other people ringing could be just doing that as they are part of the scam - making him think there really is a problem.

What I'd be doing is:

1) Google any number that shows up as incoming - a good chance people will have received a call from the same number, and you'll be able to find out more about it
2) The next time someone calls, see what they say, but do nothing that they ask you to do

As there are similar scams where they'll ask you to open an app or press a number to go through to an automated menu.

Probably just cold callers, but be careful it could cost you money.

If you use two factor authentication (2FA( to secure sites, like the Google Authenticator, then someone with your number can get access to your tokens. If this happens they can authenticate as you. This is a common scam to steal crypto currencies from known crypto traders since all exchanges are secured using 2FA in this way.

Any unknown numbers I usually ignore an make note of number in phone contacts so I know if they call again. If it’s important they’ll ring back.

If I do answer a number I don’t recognise I never speak first you can usually tell from their opening line if it’s a recorded message
