Our FullBacks

Post by piston broke » Fri Aug 31, 2018 7:41 pm

I’ve seen a thread with a call for Bardsley before Lowton and many are suggesting Taylor before Ward. I’ve checked 2018 PL fixtures and the results as starters are:
Lowton: W5 D4 L6
Ward: W5 D4 L5
Bardsley: W0 D2 L3
Taylor: W0 D2 L4

The whole team has been off their best. Let’s not lay it at the door of two of our unsung heroes. SD knows best.

But surely the opposition is a variable (one of several, I imagine) that would need to be taken into account?

Absolutely.

So no objections if he plays Charlie and Bardsley, then?

None at all but he won’t.

Both Ward and Lowton haven’t shown last seasons form yet this year. Ward particularly just seems to have lost an edge of sharpness. With a hard working left winger tracking back, Taylor would probably edge it for me at the minute.

I'd still go with Lowton and Ward.

Lowton and Ward for me too

Bardsley is good defensively but looks like he's often on the verge of getting sent off / giving away a penalty. Not sure what it is, maybe he just looks volatile

Taylor has a cracking cross but Ward has more desire to keep bombing forward and overlapping

Having said that it's great to have options

As above, last season's stats don't really matter as much as this season's form. And I would agree that Ward in particular hasn't looked 'at it' this season so far.

Charlie Taylor needs a proper run at left back. He is class. He was arguably our best player during that bad run at the start of the year and was undeservedly dropped.
