My Grandad fought against the Germans and Italians in the Second World War in the African desert, through Italy and into Germany. They detained loads of each nationality as they went and the Funny thing is he liked the Germans but absolutely despised the Italians.

My Grandad told similar tale.
He was based at one of the holding POW camps in Holland and had just moved out a group of Italian soldiers prior to a German group coming in.

On arriving at the “hut” the lead German stopped at the door, sniffed and said “Italians have been here”. They asked for bleach and cleaning stuff and scrubbed the place themselves before moving in.

Of the 2 groups, grandad said the Germans were the much better to look after, always polite and never had any problems with them - in fact one prisoner even made a wood carving for my grandad to bring back for my nanna
