Alistair Cook retires
— 160 Tests
— 12,254 runs
— 32 hundreds
— 56 fifties
— 173 catches
— 4 Ashes series wins
— 1 Alastair Cook
Superb player for England over the years. I will never forget him batting for days on end in the ashes series down under for us to bring the Urn home.

Well played sir.
I'm sure he'd have hoped England had another established opener at the point he retired. As it is, we are left trying to find two of them.

A good decision from an outstanding cricketer, it's the right time to go and he knows it. One of England's best ever run gatherers.

Great player.

He’s been a great player for sure. He doesn’t warrant a place in the team with his form over the last year though. It’s for the best.

Re: Alistair Cook retires
Smashing player who has served us well for 13 years in, arguably, the most difficult position to bat.
He only had 9 ducks in 289 innings and his record speaks for itself.
He has not been himself this year and has obviously decided that now was the time to go after scoring just 209 runs in the series against India at an average of 29.86, however, he has gone out on the back of a winning series and good luck to him.

In Tests where Alastair Cook has opened the batting, his average is 44.38. The average for other openers in those Tests is 34.10.
We won't appreciate what we had until it's gone.

Like it or not he’s scores over the past year don’t justify a place.
He’s not alone in that mind.

County bowlers will be pleased,he'll pile up runs at that level.Bordeauxclaret wrote:He’s playing for Essex next season.

The top players know when to bow out with grace,be typical of Cook to notch a century at the Oval now,his stats aren't brilliant recently but i'd have taken him to Sri Lanka purely because he's our best player of spin bowling, big shoes to fill for someone.
My favourite innings was the Ashes in Brisbane 2010/11 series England were under the cosh and he Strauss and Trott batted for nearly 2 full days to salvage a draw, psychologically this played a major part in England's series win..
Re: Alistair Cook retires
A series too many, in hindsight. Shame to end with such low scores.
Been fantastic opener and leaves behind....a batting shambles.

Re: Alistair Cook retires
He is getting a lot of praise from his fellow cricketers and quite rightly
And virtually all of them are saying that you would find it difficult to find a nicer guy than Alastair Cook
What a cricketers and what a man!

He averaged 29 in a series that the ball was hooping around corners. Batted for an hour and a half for 17 in one which got described as poor. Any cricket captain would appreciate that immensely.
The real problem is we never got a partnership going at the top to protect the rest.

I don’t like to brag about it but I once shared a lift up Heron Tower in London with Alistair Cook and his wife. It was one of the most pleasant lift journeys I’ve ever had, made even more remarkable because I usually prefer the descent.

None of the openers on either team have passed 50 throughout the series, the seam bowlers from both sides have used the new cherry and the helpful conditions to their advantage.Quickenthetempo wrote:Really???

Racking my brains for an alternative opener Hameed would have been an obvious replacement, but he needs to find his form.
England could go back to Mark Stoneman but he's averaging less than 30 in the CC.
Jennings will likely survive for now,but he has to convert these 20's and 30's into half-centuries or bigger.
The only other name that comes to mind is Sam Robson but again he is only averaging 17 in the CC.
Just shows how bare the cupboard is for potential Test openers.

Re: Alistair Cook retires
I'm down The Oval Friday (and Sunday). I'd love for us to win the toss and bat on Friday and Cook to get 50+, it'd be fitting.
He's not been in great form this year but been a great contributor to England's cause over the last 10 years or so. There's not really anybody obviously ready to knock him off his perch but clearly he's had enough and wants to get away from the limelight/pressure and play a season or two for Essex & chill out on the farm. Good luck to him.
He's a very decent man & made a good and timely decision here.

I pray the day dawns when all cricketers retire, it is THE most boring sport on the planet, dull cannot describe it adequately. Horrific, smug, middle class commentry, rich kids who make up the slovenly unfunny barmy army, and...

I'm not fond of The Barmy Army myself but cricket is a great game to watch and play. Very family friendly at club level too.
