UEFA Nations League starts today

Post by FactualFrank » Thu Sep 06, 2018 3:40 pm

I'm quite looking forward to this, as interested to see how competitively teams are going to take it.

We're in Group A4, and of course Spain will be better on paper (ba dum tss!)

Games today:

Group A1: Germany v France (20:45)

League B
Group B1: Czech Republic v Ukraine (20:45)
Group B4: Wales v Republic of Ireland (20:45)

League C
Group C3: Slovenia v Bulgaria (20:45), Norway v Cyprus (20:45)

League D
Group D1: Kazakhstan v Georgia (16:00), Latvia v Andorra (20:45)
Group D4: Armenia v Liechtenstein (20:45), Gibraltar v FYR Macedonia (20:45)

First competitive match for Ryan Giggs and the Germany - France game should be a good one. Kazakhstan v Georgia first game, on Sky Sports.

The tournament that we have been building up to all summer. It’s finally here. At least we should get to see some more interesting friendlies so the new format can only be a good thing.

Is the England Spain match not on terrestrial TV? I thought all England games had to be accessible to all?

This article might enlighten some peeps, the process makes the EL draw look straightforward.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/42719404" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Reading the detail if some nations are cute, there could be an easier route to the 2020 European Championships, from England's POV and most of the other high ranking countries,i suspect these games are just glamorous friendlies.

Wales and the Republic will always be fiercely contested, just hope all our boys come through unscathed.

If the Germans beat the French will they claim the title of unofficial World Champions

Candidates for vacancies at UEFA employees must have read at least two novels by Franz Kafka.

Ireland’s Burnley trio being made to look distinctly poor by a young welsh team :o

He's played 9 competitive games at senior level, I think only with Exeter City!

Dear God Ireland are absolutely dreadful. Think Ampadu has played in a few cup games for Chelsea.

And to top it all off Wardy looks like he’s hurt his knee and has gone off. He’ll be ‘touch and go’ for a week Sunday

Yes i've just noticed he is on Chelsea's books,i hope he gets some game time, even if he has to go on loan in January,he is too talented to warm the bench.

France vs Germany was a good game.

Very competitive and few subs. These teams are taking it seriously which can only be a good thing.

1-0 to Belgium at HT,Lukaku scoring a gift from the Scots though, could have been 2 as the post saved Scotland just before the interval, bigger worry for Scotland and Celtic Leigh Griffiths has a knock.

Now 2-0 Hazard in the opening seconds of the restart.

3-0 Batshuayi after Charlie Mulgrew error.

4-0 Batshuayi again.

They’ve been on top, not taken their chances and then have been caught out and now a goal behind

Where have we seen that before?

England v Spain (19:45 BST)

What a season it is turning into for Luke Shaw as the Manchester United full-back gets a start for England.

Fellow United team-mates Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford are in too, as is Liverpool defender Joe Gomez.

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Shaw, Maguire, Gomez, Stones, Henderson, Lingard, Alli, Rashford, Kane.

The Luis Enrique era for Spain begins without the retired Andres Iniesta, Gerard Pique and David Silva.

Two former Bolton team-mates get a start, with both Marcos Alonso and Rodrigo in the eleven.

Spain XI: De Gea, Carvajal, Nacho, Ramos, Alonso, Niguez, Busquets, Alcantara, Isco, Aspas, Rodrigo.

No Tarks in the starting XI,Oh! well at least he can't get injured, should have a chance of playing in the Switzerland game hopefully.

I've never rated Pique as much as many people have, but Iniesta and Silva will be a big miss for Spain.

I'm a big of Sky Sports football and think they blow BT Sport out of the water. But I do think England games should be on BBC/ITV.

That’s the same referee who gave the penalty against Tarky in the friendly against Italy who’s just given Denmark a soft pen against Wales. Must be working his way through the home nations with dodgy decisions!

A meaningless contest that has disrupted our season.I know some people will see it as a valuable break after our awful start but this break and the one in October are nonsense.

The International break would have been there whether the Nations League existed or not, so it has not 'disrupted our season'. We'd have been sat out watching friendly fixtures instead.

Personally I am fully in the camp who think having a week out is a good thing for our threadbare, injury ravaged squad.
