Leeds Liverpool Canal 1972

Post by welsbyswife » Thu Sep 06, 2018 7:37 pm

I came across this old documentary on the BBC iplayer last night. Fascinating footage of the canal and towns along it including Burnley. Brings it home how run down places were at the time. Old industry pretty much gone and not much regeneration in sight. He stops off to look at the "new" redevelopments in Burnley and Blackburn town centres and describes a "nice" housing scheme in Wigan. Shows that attitudes to awful 60s planning were not what they are now.

One thing he had right is that he sensed that Burnley was more inward looking than other places on the route. Still like that today!

I'll tell you what... Lancashire and Yorkshire certainly performed a double act when it came to being two different sides of the same mucky coin of the industrial revolution. Liverpool, Blackburn, Burnley and Leeds were all in cahoots to an extent, perhaps.

It was certainly very mucky in 1972. An odd pleasure cruiser in Skipton but the idea of the canal as a leisure destination was some time off.

I DID see something last year about the canal. Liverpool used to dump its sh*t into longboats, and send it to Wigan. Lovely. I guess dealing with other people's crap beat working in the coal mines.

I was looking forward to this, but it appears it can only be viewed in the UK. Thanks for posting it, though.

What is the high building behind the town centre shops at 13.21? Looks like a clock tower of some sort

I’ve got them on VHS bought years ago, the 1972 video was interesting & very noticeable how much has changed the derelict areas are now mostly waterside development, it missed the doublearch bridge at marton off I thought it could have been mentioned quite a significant feature, covering 127 miles in under 30mins can’t cover everything.

Didn't there used to be some sort of Methodist church hall down that way that has made way for something else? I thought that was maybe what the tower was but am not sure. I also noticed that he didn't mention the bridge at Marton and also that he pronounced it the "fowl"ridge tunnel but can't expect everything.

He missed the 2 sunken barges, but featured the Kierby. Interesting.

Apparently applied for listed building status and a blue plaque outside to recognize the talents of 1960s architecture.

Lots of dark alleys in that part of Burnley. And what are you suggesting, Dazzler? The only female I saw when I stayed there wasn't a day under 85.
