What would you do...
Question for the night owls...
I am staying in a small hotel in Vietnam. Woke up to find that managers dog has chewed my leather sandals and they are ruined. Do I...
Complain to manager and ask for comp to pay for replacement, approx £50, which I guess is 3 days salary for him
Or take it on the chin and have to spend £50 for a new pair upon replacement.
Insurance won't cover as excess is £75. No mention of dogs when I booked!

Take it on the chin mate! That's what I would do...having lived in Thailand for 4.5 years I know that he would be mortified at what has happened but probably doesn't have that kind of money to replace.

Re: What would you do...
tell him what happened and tell him not to stress about it - better he knows what the dog did via a decent human being like yourself than some knobhead that goes on off him for said compensation - best of both worlds

Re: What would you do...
Sound advice above I think. Given a bottle of beer in Vietnam is well under £1 maybe try and view it as a “beer tax” over the duration of your trip with every bottle you drink recouping part of the hit.

Ah...just seen that you have now said you’re off to the airport ! Beer will no doubt cost more there and you may be unable to manage enough cans before take off !

Don’t tell him he might eat the dog
Re: What would you do...
Another story where a dog has created a problem for an innocent person going about their daily business.
I'm sure like many of the other stories, it will end up being at a cost and inconvenience to you.

Kill the dog and fashion it into some form of bloody hound shoe.
Explain to the manager why you are walking around with your foot inside his dog.
I know the Vietnamese. He would be offended if you didn’t do this

Never mind the moral dilemma - £50 for a pair of sandals?!
Could be this year's "£4k watch"

When living in Thailand flip flops were very cheap....however, the amount of times they were 'stolen' by someone from outside a bar....hahaha!!

Unless you saw the dog chewing the sandals, I reckon it's more likely the manager who hasn't eaten for a few days.

Birkenstocks! Any other form of sandal is a false economy as you have to buy 3 pairs to match the life of one pair of birkenstocks.TheFamilyCat wrote:Never mind the moral dilemma - £50 for a pair of sandals?!

Re: What would you do...
Sad story but true, you have to be careful who you argue with in that part of the world. A couple I know very well had a son who managed a nightclub in the Philipines, one night he refused entry to a guy who he suspected might be a drug dealer. A little later the guy came back and shot him dead.
If anyone gets a shoe eaten in future by a dog just say 'good boy' and walk away, otherwise you might not be needing shoes.

Re: What would you do...
Perhaps get yourself a cheap replacement pair over there - something which the manager could help towards the cost of?ClaretDiver wrote:Different story!!! Just explain to the guy as VegasClaret said...then go buy a bottle of Mekong and sit down with him and have a good laugh!
Re: What would you do...
Not technically true... You might only have a pair for 2 months before a dog eats them, whereas someone else might pay £10 and they never get eatenAlanstevensonsgloves wrote:Birkenstocks! Always put the Birkenstocks in the room safe, along with your passport. Sounds like you were quite neglectful, where did you leave them, in the dog basket?

On a serious note though, I’d just write a scathing review and give the hotel a 0* rating on TripAdvisor to make sure that the guy’s livelihood takes a hugely damaging hit.

That will unfairly affect both the other members of staff, plus the 3 innocent dogs. (Presuming it was only one that did it, and they weren't all having a quiet nibble!)Rileybobs wrote:On a serious note though, I’d just write a scathing review and give the hotel a 0* rating on TripAdvisor to make sure that the guy’s livelihood takes a hugely damaging hit.

I'm surprised Bin Ont Turf hasn't been on this thread celebrating the demise of a pair of sandals.
