Burnley town centre refurbishment
Just a snippet from the new plans that may interest us fans, courtesy of burnley express online.
Another long-term aspiration is to revamp Yorkshire Street. This could include improving pedestrian access to Turf Moor. The report states: “The large roundabout junction arrangement at the Church Street/Centenary Way/Yorkshire Road junction is very unhelpful to pedestrian movement across all junction approaches and the pedestrian subway is uninviting.” The masterplan proposes a redesign of the junction, with additional space given over to pedestrians: “There is also great potential to formalise the processional route to Turf Moor with lighting columns, signage / flags, and tree planting, which would add to the sense of occasion on match days.”

Could’ve started right at the big pink and lilac bus station. Bloody thing should’ve been claret and blue. The buses should be claret and blue. Railings should be claret and blue. The whole bloody town should be decked out in claret and blue.
Yorkshire st could be so much better, and it’ll cost a few quid to sort out. We’ll see.

And while there at it, Yorkshire Street should be renamed Lancashire Street.

Where the bandstand was and what was once a thriving part of Burnley with a central bus stand and town centre liveliness, is now a concrete wasteland. In winter it is as desolate as the moon.
There is no reason, given the ground acreage, why an architectural development could not be built from the Swan Inn to where Benns Toy Shop used to be, with alley ways and boutique shops and cafes and pubs and a new 'quarter' for the town, perhaps including flats above.
Think the medieval quarter of Barcelona etc. or the shambles in York, or whatever it needs to inspire somebody that matters.

Re: Burnley town centre refurbishment
Yorkshire Street is a mess!
I pass through it a lot, and you'd think after years I'd be blinded to the view, but I'm not. It's such a shame when you see pictures from decades ago when it looked far cleaner and more uniform. I don't know, maybe the black and white images helped?
I sigh when travelling through other towns (not all as some are far worse than ours - Luton, Worksop etc), when seeing that the local council obviously have strict rules with regards to signage (Lutterworth, Shrewsbury etc), ensuring little to no garish neon signs on takeaways, and having uniformity of the buildings and windows. The buildings around there are falling down, and either need to be compulsory purchased and renovated, or demolished. The old Footballer's Arms is one of those buildings, as is the RDA building.
I wish our town planners would be stricter with regards to shop fascias, and force those takeaways down there to sort their building out. Even if it meant part payment with the council, or cheaper rates for a while. Blooming eye sores.

Re: Burnley town centre refurbishment
The building at the end of Plumbe Street has been empty for around 30 years. I find myself wondering how a landlord can afford to have a building sit empty for that long or why you wouldn’t try to sell it

I suspect that the building isn't fit to be used by another business without huge sums being spent on it. Burnley looks tired. But one of the main reasons is the shops with old dusty signage, flaking paint, old windows and disused wires flapping about. I think if landlords, owners and tenants of the shops, pubs and other buildings took more pride, it would look much nicer.

Could it be tax related?MRG wrote:The building at the end of Plumbe Street has been empty for around 30 years. I find myself wondering how a landlord can afford to have a building sit empty for that long or why you wouldn’t try to sell it
I know a friend tried to buy a town centre premise that had been empty, at market price, for four years but the owner would not sell it.
Sure one of our resident accountants could de-bunk that theory if incorrect!
Personally I think they’ve done a good job with the town centre and look forward to them improving Yorkshire Street. With the developments in the pipe line at the other end of town near Primark- things are looking up for the town centre.

Levelling the Kierby complex would be a start. Also levelling the Adelphi and Reindeer Hotels. 1st impressions last and our main bus station and train station are surrounded by sh!tholes. Look at the mess that Croft St. is. Sidewalk 53 has been derelict for over a decade and that whole row facing the bus station is a disgrace

A big improvement would be a clean up and facelift for Westgate from the Mitre lights down to Kwikfit / B&M Bargains traffic lights.
The houses and retaining walls on the right hand side should be sand/water blasted and de-weeded, the disused car park just past Chorley Nissan be purchased & brought into use, and whilst the " Plane Tree " may now house luxury flats, the outside is covered in weeds and looks like a dosshouse from the outside....

I hope the planners also think about the car drivers who travel from around the country. It's chaos trying to get away from Turf Moor.

That is where a "Shambles" type shopping area should be

I am quite impressed with the flagging and trees on st James st, especially at night when they are lit up.
Re Yorkshire st not sure what you could do with it, the shops are tired the takeaways are tired but will the owners contribute anything to them being given a facelift ? Doubt it.

Re: Burnley town centre refurbishment
I mentioned Luton further up. Now I didn't expect anything as such when I was there for a couple of days last week for work but blimey, Burnley looks like Kensington in comparison. Even Trowbridge near Bath is very much like Burnley, yet I expected more down there. Swindon is just like Burnley, and I might argue worse, and Worsksop, and even parts of Leeds are rough. We're no different than many areas all around the country, but it doesn't mean we should be happy and accept it.lrac wrote:Your town is heavenly .just compare it to Keighley near to me .I think you will change your minds .now Keighley is a real dump.
On the whole Burnley isn't bad, but we do have small pockets we could make look better, especially the main through roads into and out of town particularly, as that's what people see. Away fans travelling to Burnley (in the Premier League it's thousands most home games), for example, always see Yorkshire Street and the terraced streets at the back of Belvedere Road when parking cars, which are very run down.

Yorkshire street does need some serious money spending on it, as does Belvedere Road.

Ha ha, artists impression indeed. I think someone on the council pocketed the cash and got their eight year old to do it. Hilarious, but rather worrying too if they want the plan to be taken seriously.

It's a laudable idea as it definitely needs sorting and (the bizarre street people/cut outs aside), it doesn't look bad to me, but they need to seriously think about traffic on Yorkshire St as it's constantly snarling up on there most times of most days and backing onto the roundabout.
