I'm looking for somewhere a little out of the odinary to visit I've done the Lake District once wasn't really my cup of tea along with York once also..London lots of attractions to see and historic buildings but seen enough of them. I've seen sailsbury mentioned as a top place to visit I believe it's got a really high steeple and cathedral.... any views any suggestions welcomed.

Salisbury is great, but don't visit when there is "muddy slush" or else you might miss out on your trip to Stonehenge.

A two day visit to Salisbury would do the trick, remember to look out for the clock.

The Whitby White Dogdirt Museum is a must visit. We loved it and our kids loved it too and so did our dog. They even had white dogdirt fossils on display, but they were black, a bit like jet, not white, but black, a bit like white Whitby dogdirt that's gone black. Fascinating stuff.

I thought the Eden Centre was worth the visit but a massive rip off. You had to buy an annual pass, which is great if you live in Cornwall. But nobody lives in Cornwall.

Erm yeah, it was worth the visit but not worth the money. It was somewhere that I’m very glad that I visited but I wouldn’t pay to visit again. There are plenty of things that I’ve done and places that I’ve seen that have been worth the visit/experience but were overpriced.Garnerssoap wrote:Not worth the visit then was it you subservient clod

Tim,I take it you talking about a day out ,,how about something historical like HMS trincomalee docked at Hartlepool..?
on route, there or back, you could also take in the delights that Durham has to offer.

I don’t get out of my VW camper for anything less than 8ft waves, dude. I remember it not being much of a beach day. The structures were impressive and the idea fairly novel. Worth seeing.Garnerssoap wrote:Seriously bud if you’re glad you gave a day of your life to visit that guff then you’re either a poor mans david Bellamy or just don’t like 6ft waves
I once visited Truro which was easily a bigger waste of a day.

Re: Uk tourist attractions/destinations
I'd never been to Whitby until 18 months ago. Whitby itself gets quite busy especially up narrow street to abbey steps. Even more so when I overlooked taking my child carrying rucksack and opted for the pushchair.
Having said that about busy, there was still a serenity to the place. It made me happy just being there which at the time I found a bit odd. I've travelled quite a bit here and overseas but never experienced that feeling before.
Very little there but also a lovely little spot is staithes. Definitely worth an afternoon there if you just want to relax. Also young kids will know it from old jacks boat

Possibly file this under `stupid questions 2018` but why wasn`t the Lake District your `cup of tea`? Living over here, I pine for that place and whenever I return it`s pretty much my destination of choice after seeing my family. For me, it`s one of the most beautiful places in the world.tim_noone wrote:I'm looking for somewhere a little out of the odinary to visit I've done the Lake District once wasn't really my cup of tea along with York once also..London lots of attractions to see and historic buildings but seen enough of them. Salisbury is open! Great visit. Mediaeval city with some buildings restored. Excellent museums in the Cathedral Close. Plenty of bars, restaurants and coffee shops.
A walk across the 'Town Path' gives you the view painted by Constable. At the other end of the path is the Old Mill pub. Very old and worth a visit.
Currently, parking is free every day after midday and all day, weekend. Market is Tuesday and Saturday.
Adjacent to Salisbury is Laverstock, which has the River Bourne Community Farm Free entry lots of animals, cafe, produce etc.

No...not stupid it just doesn't do anything for me It relates to the commercialism of Keswick I visited over 30 years ago and I just thought money making ...yes I know they're all at it now so that always stuck with me... The guy who's mentioned Whitby I also get his feeling of serenity about a place but again it's not for me but I get him....but I get that in London and Bingley.....strange but true!!HiroshimaClaret wrote:Possibly file this under `stupid questions 2018` but why wasn`t the Lake District your `cup of tea`? Re: Uk tourist attractions/destinations
I see your point but with convenience stores everywhere and supermarkets bursting out of our backpockets, the shops in Keswick still seem so beautifully twee to me (I know they`re not, of course). Keswick is usually my base when I go as I think the North Lakes have far more character than the South.tim_noone wrote:No...not stupid it just doesn't do anything for me It relates to the commercialism of Keswick I visited over 30 years ago and I just thought money making ...yes I know they're all at it now so that always stuck with me... On my next trip back home, I`d love to walk the Pendle Witch Trail and at some stage Hadrian`s Wall.
Good luck and wherever you get to, have a great time!!!!
p.s. what about the Giant`s Causeway in Northern Ireland?

Isle of Skye is probably one of my favourite spots in UK. Loved it. And the drive up isnt bad. Beats the east coast of Scotland to Aberdeen drive thats for sure. But there is a lot of walking to see it all. Nothing too intense other than maybe old man of storr.
Some nice places in Derbyshire which I have mainly seen when working there rather than visiting per se. But always a cracking drive that way.
Wells and Cromer in Norfolk were nice .But seems like you are on the same road forever until you get there. But some of the old buildings in that part are very impressive! Even Norwich itself was very nice. Bit further away Oxford and Cambridge I found overrated and a bit dull!
London always the best for me but always busy for obvious reasons. Except when I went on Christmas Day and boxing day. Had the whole city to ourselves!

You're right it is just a bunch of stones at the end of the day - but we've livened it up now - there's plenty of drummers and the Druids anoint you in blood and get you to participate in a real sacrifice

If you are culturally inclined Stratford on Avon is a great place to go. Very relaxing with lots of amazing free entertainment on the green, including free, albeit abridged slightly, perfomances of Shakespeare. But if you go you must visit the theatre, their performances bring Shakespeare to life and are often done in modern settings, including one time a 'dance' music session.
Unfortunately one of the best places has now changed but that used to have live music on nearly every night, includng some classic rock bands from the past.

When I drove there a helicopter flew past and a tank overtook me on the road while I was looking at the stones. I was more impressed with that tbh. Must be a military base nearby?

Larkhill is about 2 miles away - British Artillery HQ. Then there's loads of other bases in the area. Once you're off the A roads you're very likely to see tanks, helicopters, parachutists etc. I always give way to the tanks...cricketfieldclarets wrote:

Eden Project and Center Parcs have certain things in common... self contained and nothing of Britain lies therein.
Britain has thousands of wonderful things to see and do. Sadly, IMO, neither Eden Project nor Center Parcs are amongst them.
We have wonderful cities of all varieties, stunning coastline, the most beautiful towns and villages, brilliant walking and cycling, majestic mountains and breathtaking lakes; fabulous shows, great gigs and festivals, such a selection of local foods to try, international cuisine to savour, the best breweries by far... and Burnley.

New spot on tourist map: V&A Dundee.
A very clever Japanese architect has built something wonderful.
It's a long time since I've been to Scotland - and never before got to Dundee. The V&A will get me there.
And, if you do visit, tell them that all your friends have told you it's worth a visit.

The Tate Modern extension has a viewing platform, but it's a bit of a miserable art gallery. Some nice painting in the other bit. Hilarious OP by the way... 'I've done the Lake District.'
