O/T Genuine idiot question about DVDs

Post by ecc » Sat Sep 15, 2018 5:49 pm

Hello everybody.

This IS a serious question and any help offered would be gratefully received.

I never buy films on DVD but am thinking of getting one as a present for a friend.

My question is: does the official price of the DVD when first released change (downwards) over time? I'm not talking mega films e.g. "Dunkirk" but films that were average successful in terms of Box Office. Or will sites like Amazon start selling the DVD at a lower price?

Many thanks!

UTC

I think regarding prices it's like computer games. The older they get the cheaper they become.

A SNES game will cost you about 60 quid with a box.

Is it a specific film you want or any?
The likes of Asda, Tesco and the £stores have bargain bins where you can occasionally find a gem.

80% of films will drop in price overtime.

If you know what film you want a quick search online will find you the best price.

Does your friend have a DVD player or a Blu-ray player?
Might be worth checking.

Dvd will work on both systems, but they might prefer Blu-ray if that's what they've got.

Which SNES game? You can get Mario Kart and a full SNES system for less than that. And that was when I bought it (again) around 10 years ago. SNES games I see are normally about a quid.

SNES, and other retro games, are varied in price nowadays, it's a bigger market then it used to be for older stuff.

Thank you everybody. It's a film DVD not a game.

A film will fluctuate in price depending on what it is but generally speaking a new release DVD isn't going to be 15 quid a year later.

It's interesting that DVD's don't seem to be going the way of VHS, yet at least.

They will. It could all be on usb in 5 years. More TVs have usb input now. Space saving for storage and delivery as well.

Charity shops are full of DVDs. You'll have to wade through a load of crap to find a good one.

I think that's because of PCs having the DVD drives. People like to buy DVDs and watch them on their computer, not always on an actual DVD player + TV. Whereas the VHS was pretty limited.

Then again, my PC has a DVD drive and I think the only film I ever watched on it was the Wizard of Oz.

True, obsolete vintage consoles/computers & games awhile ago used to fetch reasonable prices, probably still would to a collector if in a immaculate condition, c64 spectrum ect, the plug & play you can get cheap, mario, altered beast, Dan dare ect, diminished the value greatly with people just wanting old skool type playability.
