I actually got emailed this link, without seeing this thread. I genuinely thought it was a joke.

But it isn't. It's bad.

Not for businesses in entertainments - we're a classic example of a business who only needs to employ people for a certain amount of time on certain days. It makes sense to have a pool of labour from which to draw. For people who this is appropriate for (e.g. students etc) that's fine. No one is saying they make good basis to hold down a mortgage etc.

For SOME businesses they have to operate in that way - you can always set up to say that you will guarantee a certain amount of hours but often sports venues have a pool which they draw from.

Why are we asking people to volunteer for this? Isn't this a stewards job?

Didn't the London Olympics (and possibly other Olympics) rely on an army of volunteer "Games Makers"?

Thousands took up the opportunity. I wonder if there will be such enthusiasm to stand about outside The Turf.

Have to say for a business that is turning over millions of pounds every year this is really poor. Don't like the way the club seems to be heading off the field. I feel like the 10/11 thousand of us who'll be there no matter what are increasingly being taken for granted. If we end up back scratching around the bottom half of the Championship in the next few years the tourists and 50/50 scarf wearers certainly won't be there.

Deary me. These type of jobs infuriate me. Pay the people a decent hourly rate you tight sods We have a Manager and staff earning thousands of pounds a week, more that some of us can dream of and they advertise for people to provide a service for them for nowt, it stinks.

Manchester City have similar roles I think they're called gamemakers or something like that and they pay £14 an hour! Not saying we can compete with that rate but as a multi million pound business asking people to work for free not even a minimum wage, free tickets or literally any incentive is absurd. Clearly the club aren't just stingy when it comes to the playing staff...

That is absolutely staggering. Why would anybody give up there time for no material reward at all for a multi million pound organisation?
If you want volunteering on your CV, there are thousands of more deserving organisations where you can make a genuine difference.

The idea of the roles isn’t necessarily a bad one. Aside from that though, expecting someone to do this for free, miss the game and for no reward, is poor.

Yes of course you could be transferred to City. Only one problem though, Burnley would want a transfer fee.
Seriously though, I cannot believe BFC are not offering a reward to these volunteers in the shape of a couple of VIP 1882 lounge tickets per volunteer as a thank you. They could take these on less glamorous matches like Huddersfield et al or night games. Of course they couldn’t take the same games together but should be easy to administer. Come on BFC you are seriously out of touch here!

Oh, and this scheme is vile. I've seen the club be good, bad, inconsiderate, helpful, stupid, clever and everything in between to fans, players, staff, and everybody else but this is just vile. I don't have a problem with this. Expect it won't be taken up by fans who want to be in the ground to watch the match, but it may suit some who just want to volunteer every now and again.

I've just posted the same on another thread - that is about the same subject. (Why do we have two threads)?

It worked very well for London Olympics. I can't see the problem with Burnley looking for the same. It's not a job, it's a volunteer opportunity. It will suit some - though not those that would want to be in the ground watching the game.

There is a difference - an Olympics is seen as a one-off, once in a generation opportunity to showcase the city and country. To that extent, engagement of the country's people to assist visitors fits well with that. Nearly everyone at an Olympic venue is a tourist; either local or foreign. The number of tourists in Turf Moor is trivial and these people will spend most of their time performing admin tasks such as checking accreditation. Also, the funding's different. In the end, a host city stands behind the Olympics so you're effectively helping your own taxes by helping unpaid at an Olympics. At Burnley, you're helping some of those players on Sunday get paid £30,000 for that. I'm disappointed in you Paul; you usually stand up for a very reasonable view of corporate responsibility - miles away from the leftist claptrap that others on here spout but very much against the more egregious actions of private organisations. This time (because it's BFC?), you're giving some very bad behaviour a free pass.

games makers !! what ********, whilst the tories flogged off more sports fields to building companies, there was lord coe, doing deals to line his pockets, but way down the pecking order were the games makers, a willing band of saps happy to hang on to the coat tails of popularity.

I think Burnley is different though, just genuine fans with time to spare, and willing to help.
