Very sad story. Hope the lad manages to keep on the straight and narrow and goes on to live a full life.

Being a teenager is tough in itself. Never mind with all the pressures and stresses of expectation, fame and fortune.

Would hate to be a kid growing up in today's society and its only getting worse.

It's just plain wrong to give anyone of that age, that much money.
Ed Sheehan pays himself £30,000 odd per year, apparently, the rest goes into various accounts.
If youngsters deserve the money, then it should go into a trust until they are old enough, and wise enough, to be able to deal with it.
Along with the coaching, clubs should have people around to talk to them about investments, savings and putting something away for the future on a career that could well end by the age of 32.

A lot of that story we knew about when we signed him, and I knew he'd had further problems at Burnley which saw him make an early return from his loan in Scotland. I didn't know about the problems at Salford though.

Just hope he can get through all this and get back to doing what he can do and that's playing football.

A lot of the big clubs do; I know financial advisers that go into clubs, etc Not sure how far down the ladder that goes, I know Man Utd and Spurs and a few others do it.

He had a spat with Piers Morgan on Twitter recently, Piers lost that one.

They have agents too. Yet these things still happen. And continue after they leave the game. Look at Clarke Carlisle.

I'm not sure it's the money but the character.

I agree with Hipper (post 7) It's very much to do with character, plus the people the player has around them and close to them. You can have all the talent in the world, but there is a good chance it will be wasted and largely untapped if the people close to you aren't looking out for you and keeping you grounded and if your innate character is one which leads you to indulge in excesses. Young footballers do get far too much, far too soon, but many go on to have really good careers. I feel for George because there really seems to be a great lad trapped in there trying to get out, plus he clearly had (has) enough footballing talent, but his own character and his support network let him down when he was young, vulnerable and needed it most. There are probably an awful lot of George Greens out there tbh.
