Am I the only one who thinks he'd still be a decent benchwarmer. He just came across as a lad who would give his all.

Heard this and whilst I was pleased for him it annoyed me even more than when I saw Olympiakos were hosting Betis.
If only we could have taken the competition more seriously we could have been hosting a Betis or Lazio or similar tonight which might have helped lift some of the negativity that seems to be floating around at the moment.

I don’t know why we didn’t take this more seriously. We should be hosting Real Betis tonight. We should have signed more players to cope with the workload. Whatever. Such a shame. We probably won’t get the chance again.

I liken the Europa qualifications to when we first got promoted under Coyle. Woefully unprepared and clearly out of our depth, but we tried.dermotdermot wrote:I don’t know why we didn’t take this more seriously. We should be hosting Real Betis tonight. I don’t believe we did “let him go” there was an offer made as I understand but he chose to leave for a fresh start somewhere else. I too would love him to be still in our squad, great attitude and great player too.dermotdermot wrote:Shouldn’t have let him go. Really stupid.

Airfield is and was a quality player for the football we play/played. He might not be a world beater but he left it all on the pitch and did his job well.

I'm not suggesting anything other than he'd be a useful player. Lets face it JBG and Lennon in particular have not exactly shone have they? I can understand his desire to have more game time but personally think he'd have offered more than the previously mentioned, and particularly the latter have to date.ElectroClaret wrote:I'd give my all as well, if I got the chance to play for the Clarets.

I think Airfield doesn't have to defend so much in the Gers system- a bit more duty free. Consequently, his career north of the border has really taken off.

Re: Super Scotty Arfield
He was quality against Dundee the other day. And yes I know it was Dundee. But if you get chance check out his assist in that game. Exceptional skill.
Would have him here in a heartbeat. Knew the system. Worked his socks off. Wasnt without talent.
The sad thing was we knew he was going in January time. Its not like it was a surprise. Yet we still did nothing about it

He probably thought it was the right time in his career to move on, and to the team he supports ?

And that we had two inportant midfielders injured. Its proving to be a critically poor situation with four gone and none in.bfccrazy wrote:I think more could have been done replace the gap he and Marney left is the point being made. When we knew they were going months before.

Its akin to when we didnt get any back up on for Marney and Jones in case of injury. Which inevitably happened.
This is even worse though. We knew he was leaving but didnt do anything to bring anyone in. There was the clucas story. But when that failed where was plan B (or even C).

Precisely. And Arfield offered us flexibility accross and just in front of the midfield. He effectively offered us 3 or 4 different options.bfccrazy wrote:I think more could have been done replace the gap he and Marney left is the point being made. When we knew they were going months before.

Re: Super Scotty Arfield
Sadly the beginning of the end for Scotty was when he decided to play for Canada. Should still be here albeit as a squad player. But as injuries take their toll whicb they already have he would have been excellent backup.
Cant help feeling eith the likes of him and Marney leaving more so Arfield that a big part of the clubs heart has been ripped out. I really think he was a massive part of what we were about and will struggle to replace him not just on the pitch but off it

Scott has gone to one of Europe's giants that play attacking football and try to win every game.
Apart from salary what would keep him here?

Re: Super Scotty Arfield
I love Scotty and he was an absolutely brilliant player for Burnley - free transfer and integral to our success in the early years under Dyche.
To be honest though in the last couple of years he was injured and on the bench quite a lot. In hindsight it would be great if he was still here with our lack of form and injuries as he was a very confident reliable player who never seem to get bothered by the crowd and a few boo boys.
But if we had JBG, Brady and Lennon in form he knew himself that he would be on the bench and it was him who understandably wanted to play first team football. Rangers is a big move from him and I am sure like Barton he thought that he could do well playing at a level below the Premier League.

Mad that he started being touted as a winger - when he wasn’t .... he just slipped in there because he had to.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Precisely. And Arfield offered us flexibility accross and just in front of the midfield. He effectively offered us 3 or 4 different options.
Re: Super Scotty Arfield
I always thought Arfield had more quality than people gave him credit for. Certainly in our first Premier league season under Dyche he looked capable of beating a man with the ball on the ground (I remember a few nutmegs in the first game against Chelsea). He always seemed to want to play the game in the right way and his work ethic was excellent.
He was limited by pace and strength but he was a good player that kept things ticking over, he was someone I would want the ball to roll to around the edge of the box/just inside it because his composure was generally good.
I can't believe some people on here think he wasn't good enough for us, we are missing him massively at the moment. He wasn't outstanding in any particular area (aside from his work ethic), but he was a decent underrated footballer and someone I would love to still be at the club.

Re: Super Scotty Arfield
I made no secret of the fact Arfield was a hero for me and my lad.
I was gutted when he left though fully understood it and probably expected it but I think we all expected replacements... I'll say no more on that, other than, right now, we REALLY miss him

We'd still be in the same position with Arfield, possibly 1-2 less goals conceded but incapable of scoring from open play.

Face it, though. He was terrible on the ball at the Prem level. He looks much better now because the competition isn't as stiff.

Re: Super Scotty Arfield
Whilst seeing both sides to the for/against keeping Arfield argument - one issue that's created real problems this season is the lack of protection offered to the defence by the midfield - that was probably one of his greatest strengths whether playing centrally or wide.

He simply wasnt terrible on the ball though. He was probably our most skilful player with easily the best touch (Defour aside). Just not the quickest.ontario claret wrote:Face it, though. He was terrible on the ball at the Prem level. He looks much better now because the competition isn't as stiff.
Re: Super Scotty Arfield
As per my post above I totally disagree with this. He probably wasn't as good on the ball as Brady (when fully fit) or Defour, but most of the Burnley sides he played in lacked technical ability and he was one of the better players in that respect. He always tried to play it on the deck and could beat his man, what he couldn't do was accelerate away from him.ontario claret wrote:Face it, though. He was terrible on the ball at the Prem level. OK. I grant you that when he played central midfield and had more options, he was definitely adequate. But when he played on the wing, he almost always ran into a blind alley, and always came off second best.
