Southgate
Wonder what he will take away from today's match?
Surely Hart has to be right up there in his considerations? Not sure what to make of Cork today and Tarks was solid.
A recall for Lennon ?

I suppose it was the game in the prem featuring the highest number of English players.

Re: Southgate
Cork was outshone by some very good individual performances, but he did the basics well as ever.
Re: Southgate
I’d said in my rating that Cork seem like he would benefit from a rest but as the above post says, he may of just been outshone but the other midfield 3 who all put in improved individual performances

Re: Southgate
Have a feeling Hart will never be included in an England squad again. After refusing to be the 4th GK in the warm ups to the final world cup squad I think he screwed up his chances of being recalled again. Southgate does hold grudges with things like this as shown by his refusal to pick Zaha and happily let him play for another country.
If the likes of Pope and Heaton aren't picked because of lack of games he will start picking Gunn or McCarthy and start planning for the future

Yes Definitely French from Somerset but luckily he has an Austrian granny and may get a nod from there....although He didn't last time, when it was thought he might.Steve1956 wrote:Isn't Barnes French or something like that?

Re: Southgate
I said to my brother in law as we walked out re: Cork, it wasn’t that he played badly (he did his job in a tidy unassuming professional manner) it’s just the other 3 were excellent yesterday. I often had this opinion about Jones, he did an an excellent job most weeks without really shining (though his assists were often ignored) compared to the comparative Marney, Barton, Arfield etc

Re: Southgate
The way things are trending there will soon come a point where certain games will be off limits to Southgate due to there being no Englishmen playing. When the PL began teams comprised 76% English players and that figure has reduced year on year and is now a frightening 34%, a situation that the England manager must find difficult to accept.Bop wrote:Loves the match day atmosphere and our lava pies. Obviously not helped by the fact that only 6 of the current PL teams have English managers. At least when he visits Turf Moor there are several English players to run the rule over but in general terms he really must despair at the ever reducing number of English players operating at the top level.
Re: Southgate
Let's be honest though, prior to the formation of the PL the national team were no better. We just had a bigger pool of poor quality players!Royboyclaret wrote:The way things are trending there will soon come a point where certain games will be off limits to Southgate due to there being no Englishmen playing. Can anyone really say that after winning the World Cup in 1966 they ever had high hopes afterwards?

1986, we were punched out of a semi-final.
1990, we were denied a final on pens.
1996, we’d have been in the final if Gascoigne hadn’t cut his toenails.
2006, we’d have been in the final if Rooney hadn't been crippled and a blind? ref had allowed Campbells perfectly good goal.

The point of the post though was to highlight the extent of the latest figures not so much to apportion blame. In four or five seasons time, if the trend continues, PL teams will be lucky to contain just two English players out of the eleven and that surely must be to the detriment of the national team as a whole.
Burnley, of course under Dyche, continue to be the exception to the rule.
