Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
you're right , it did, but then the poxy league and FA decided it was to be a free for all with all manner of crappy sponsporship deals, and the whole shebang was devalued, said it before, they try to whip up nostalgia for these domestic comps , but the paying public see right through it.scouseclaret wrote:Think you’ll find we’ll never win that, but we might be able to win a cup, and getting a bye to the third round and drawing the lowest ranked team in it should have been a good place to start.
That’s what football used to be about - winning stuff...
It had some degree of merit as the football league cup, but how many guises has it got under in last 20 years ?
Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
We were not rubbish, we should have been 4-1 up by 60 minutes but again our finishing let us down and 2 chalked off by the ref.
Howver Taking Defoe and Vydra off showed how 1 dimensional we are. Both of the war runing a master class down the centre with plenty of good intelligent passing football, as soon as Barnes and Vokes came on it went back to long ball.
Yes only Burton but signs of good things ahead if we can pass it about like that. And today was just 1 of those days where it just wouldn't go in.

It's the numbers that appear on the score sheet and get written down in the history books that count, how we lost is insignificant.

SYeah, sems to be taking the route of being the next Pulis; churning out functional teams that do not excite but produce some kind of result. Don't recall Pulis having any sort of joy either in cups with Stoke or West Brom. It is rather embarrassing our cup record but I doubt he is that bothered really coz Dyche is making the same decisions year in year out, i.e. making loads of changes and playing the 2nd string and the results are the same.CrosspoolClarets wrote:If Dyche had any backbone, which I doubt, he would take a risk and put out a side with the priority of giving the fans a run to make up for Europe’s debacle.
Instead we got six changes, good players but some barely match fit and others badly out of form (Wood, Ward). Fluency is all but impossible.
He’s so pragmatic he daren’t take a risk of harming the league so seasons become devoid of much excitement. I can see why he does it but it doesn’t make it more palatable.

It's 50+ years since we were last in Europe and we are hardly likely to repeat the European experience anytime soon. To see Burnley play in a competitive match at a venue such as the San Siro is unlikely to happen in any of our lifetimes, unless our business model changes as a club.boatshed bill wrote:Fair enough, if that's your view on it.

Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
They were good tonight Derby from the bits I saw. I like decent attacking teams that do not pass for the sake of it. They passed it well, in good dangerous areas. He's refreshing, looks like he enjoys it. I expect him to go far as a manager.bf2k wrote:Agreed about attacking football but Lampard is unproven and a huge risk.

Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
It started with Barnsley weeks after Dyche took over. Then we had Spurs, Wednesday, Southampton, West Ham, Arsenal, Port Vale, Lincoln, Accrington, Man City, Leeds, Olympiacos and now Burton.
All defeats. 13 defeats in Cups. 5 against Premier League sides, the rest against (in theory) inferior sides.
We have beaten Aberdeen, Basaksehir, Rovers, Sunderland, Bristol City, Middlesbrough, York, PNE and Forest.
9 wins. Only 1 a Premier League side, and they were bottom. The two European games needed extra time.
A 9-13 record isn’t great when only a handful have been higher in the league than us.

Another embarrassing result. I've never said a word against SD but he is sh!t when it comes to cups. It pains me to say that we are fast becoming an emarrasing joke of a club when it comes to cup matches. Sickening.

Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
With absolutely no evidence at all I wonder if it is SDs attitude before these games that leads the players to believe they can get away with 90%?
Does he train them for this game and give them a Burton factfile or does he just toss it off and concentrate on Cardiff? They would get the message.
Whatever something is seriously wrong for this to happen repeatedly and it is an insult to the travelling fans.

Not a fan of changing the Team for the sake of it, mainly cos I don’t think they work for us, that said I would have made 3 of them Defour, McNeil and Heaton.
Anyway this game had a bigger picture than just winning so I can live with it and will get over it fairly quickly. Well done Burton and good luck hope they get a big draw in the next round.

Unless we have a massive amount of funding available I doubt any manager could improve on what we did. We would need a billionaire owner to even match that. Outsiders very occasionally succeed once, but never twice.

Nobody can blame Sean for fielding a weakened team tonight.
I think out biggest issues with cup competitions is we can't cope people expecting us to win. I think that is the reason for our poor start to the season.
We love being the plucky underdogs. That is when we fight and get the result.

Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
Heats, Ward, Long, Mcneil, Wood are all 2nd string as they are not playing currently and havent much recently; clearly, all out of favour or others being preferred. Defour is just coming back from injury.
At the start of the game I thought he was right to make the changes as discussed in the live feed; I expected them to still be enough for an average League One side but clearly not and it isn't the first time. Therefore, the manager must be questioned for this strategy. If they all play Sunday at Cardiff then fair enough as they got a bit of match practice and some minutes under their belt; if they don't, then what was the point in changing a winning team? For these players to then just go back on the bench and play under 23 games and be back where they started a few days ago; this was a competitive, serious game and we lost; questions should be asked seeing as people shelled out money and time to travel there.

Re: GoneforaBurton versus MIGHTY CLARETS
What's alarming is we controlled the match, they created very little,2 soft goals given away again, when did we have such a soft centre.
Annoying that we have once again meekly tossed away a cup competition, even more irked as this isn't the 1st round, victory tonight and a potential quarter-final could have awaited.
That side should have had enough nous and quality to beat a League One team, especially after taking the lead.
