Michael Oliver referee mic during 2018 FA Cup Final

Post by ClaretAndJew » Wed Sep 26, 2018 8:09 pm

A very interesting video that I haven't see and thought I'd share, shows how the referee talks to the players when a big decision is made.

He’s one of very few elite refs. He’s always in control and despite being spoken to by many players, who are understandably trying to turn fine margins in their favour, he appears to have the respect of absolutely everyone.

Perhaps not respected by our current first choice keeper though.

Pretty frenetic stuff. A lot to process there.

If that’s run of the mill for your average top flight referee, you need a sharp mind and a clear communication style to operate effectively.

Many, many years ago they actually miced up a top ref (Taylor?) for the Beeb and listened to everything that was said between him and the players. I'm sure it was back in the 80's sometime and the game was Man U v Derby? It was really interesting and eyeopening tbh.

David Ellery? Tony Adams was caught telling Ellery "you're a f##king cheat" , after which Adams received a booking

I actually think the one I'm referring to goes back further than that. It was definitely Jack Taylor reffing, who later went on to be the head of the referees association and I'm sure I remember him talking to Gordon Hill who was playing for Man U. Steve Coppell was playing too.

I remember Ellery saying something along the lines of 'You can call me a **** or a **** but don't you EVER call me a cheat'

I think referees would get a lot less dissent and players would behave more if they were miked(sp) up similar to Rugby.. Can't see why its not been brought in.

They should be firmer. If they say in the dressing rooms before the game if you swear at me or an opponent it's a booking then how can the player complain.

They are too meek, they need to be authoritative. I couldn't give a f*ck how much these players are played they need to be put in their place

I think in fairness they (refs) have to realise and in fact do realise, that it's a very passionate and emotional game with very high stakes and players (and managers) getting hot under the collar in the heat of the moment has to be expected so a degree of tolerance is right. I do agree though that there is a limit beyond which certain things shouldn't be tolerated and when teams deliberately set out to target the ref by surrounding him at every opportunity from the first minute and actually see it as a legitimate part of gaining an edge in games, (as Man U did under Fergy), it really is unpalatable.
