Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
Received one of these today for going 47 in a 40 zone in Leeds, yes, yes, I'm a **** an arse hole, I deserve it, karma etc.
Question : What will the fine be? And the points? If any? There isn't any information about this, I expected speeding tickets to be issued with a fine to be paid in X amount of days.
Cheers!

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
You'll get the option of going on a speed awareness course. £80 rather than £100 for the offence.
And no points on your licence.
(If I remember right)

At 47 in 40 you may well not get the awareness course option - that's often set at +10% +2 (46 in your case).

I think it differs from force to force.
I was caught at 37 in a 30 and got the course.
I think the letter said up to 42 was the awareness course.

I think it’ll be 3 points plus a find of approx £100.

It's about 10 years since I last got caught for speeding, but can't you go online and check if the Speed Awareness option is available? Or if there's a checkbox/option on your notice, select it and post it back.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
North Yorkshire police rules will be similar to other police forces I’d imagine. I still have this from when I was caught.
I actually enjoyed the speed awareness course, though I wouldn’t like to sit through it again (you can if there’s a 3 year gap between offences). Serious educational elements of course but the gents who ran it were good fun, though I’ve heard those who run the Lancashire one are not as nice? You basically go online and pick your date and time, and that can be a Saturday or Sunday of there is availability. It took 3.1/2 hours.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
When I did the SA you actually went out in the car too. Something, I thought was much more useful than sat in a classroom. Being out on the road, you would do things by habit, which they'd tell you about. Listening to somebody infront of a whiteboard didn't do anything for me.
In fact, afterwards I came out with, "Christ, next time, I think I'll just take the points", to everyone's amusement.

That's the guideline for prosecution. Below 46 and they won't normally do anything.thatdberight wrote:At 47 in 40 you may well not get the awareness course option - that's often set at +10% +2 (46 in your case).

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
Just see it as a one off speeding tax. If you've been driving for 20 years say, and use your car most days then it's about 6,000 journeys. Being honest, everyone almost certainly creeps above the speed limit at some point on every trip.
So an £80 fine works out at around 1p per journey. Well worth it. Just don't be that one idiot on the course who wastes half an hour of everyone's time whining about how they didn't deserve a ticket. Keep quiet, daydream for a few hours and then walk away without any points.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
It does differ from force to force.
The initial NIP will not state your punishment, just make you aware that you were caught doing what speed, and the circumstances.
I was caught a couple of months ago doing 71mph on the M62, when the variable speed limit had dropped to 60. I’ve been offered a speed awareness course, which set me back £92.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
I got done a couple of years ago, 38 in a 30 zone.
Took the speed awareness course as an option, which cost me a morning's work plus about £90.
Personally I thought it was worth it, I didn't think it in any way patronising or condescending. The chap who did it was really informative and passionate about road safety. I honestly believe the course has made me a better and more considerate motorist.

You have 28 days to Reply. Use that time to the full then appeal it and make the parasites work for your money!
If you can make it drag on for 6 months it will time out.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
I got done in July doing 50mph in a 40. Didn't realise it was a 40 and wasn't actually sure if it was national speed limit.
It was in Cumbria. I was offered speed awareness which I did, cost £90. The course has changed my driving for the better. Went past a speed camera van doing 25mph in a 30 yesterday.
I think you are okay up to 52mph in a 40. I think the RAC has a table with the range between speed awareness and points / ban.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
I went on a speed awareness course when they were first introduced. The course was in the Dr Iven suite at Turf Moor. Morning in the classroom then driving in the afternoon. It changed the way I drive too, like most people on this thread.
If you come away from one of these courses taking nothing from it, you are obviously as thick as mince and deserve the points you will no doubt pick up afterwards.
I have little sympathy for speeders these days

Is mince thick? I mean it's shredded meat. Surely a better turn of phrase would be "as thick as the original carcass was"?Damo wrote:I went on a speed awareness course when they were first introduced. Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
Not done one but what does a 'Speed Awareness' course consist of that it helps improve your driving? Genuinely curious.
Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
I passed my test during Italia 90 and I'd guess the Highway Code has changed since then, as have road layouts / sped limits. It is a refresher for one.
I used to be an impatient driver who had to get everywhere 2-3 minutes quicker than it should take. They went through stats of driving at 70mph and driving at 80mph on a motorway and there is very little difference in time / distance covered. I drive up to Carnforth once a week and now do 70 as opposed to anything above 80 mph on the M6. We get there in the similar time and doesn't feel longer. Use less fuel.
Tail gating - the trainer said if you are less than 6 cars distance from the car in front you are tail gating so I keep further distance from car front.
Setting from lights like a dick to stop someone cutting you up, inevitably you will end up at the next set of traffic lights a car behind or alongside that car. It actually happen on my way to the course. Again a waste of fuel and stress levels. Was on the bay gateway going to Heysham the other weekend in poor driving conditions. I was taking it easier and a Range Rover went past doing 80 and guess what happened 3 miles down the road at a set of traffic lights, I pulled up alongside him.
More paint, more restraint.

Re: Notice of Intended Prosecution for speeding
Information about the placing of traffic signs was very useful I found ..... reading the sign is something we can all do but having an idea of why it is there is something extra. (For example - most warning signs are there because there has been at least one accident caused by the hazard ahead - it concentrates the mind when you know that).Wisswosswass wrote:Not done one but what does a 'Speed Awareness' course consist of that it helps improve your driving? Not really. He could have defended it on his own and saved himself a couple of grand. It's a simple point of law and not a "Loophole." The notice has to be sent minimum 1st class and within the 14 day time limit. If we have to adhere to certain driving laws then so should they!LoveCurryPies wrote:

Driving in the UK is a nightmare with the Congested roads and speed cameras. I also drive in Spain half the year and notice the difference when I return to the UK.
Very few speed cameras, little traffic and better quality roads due to the lack of use in Spain

Not quite sure about that, I know there's less fish about for a fact, not quite sure how ducks fit in unless they've been speeding. Back on topic the prosecution for speeding offences seem to be going up & catching people out now in the less obvious places, I'm really careful when driving you've got to be, your eyes need to everywhere.Devils_Advocate wrote:Too many ducks in this country doesn't help but at least their population seems to be going down for some unknown reason

Nothing whatsoever to do with road safety, if it was safer roads they were concerned about They would start by making them safer to actually drive on without motorists having to slalom around the potholes with one eye on the Speedo.
