Giving up alcohol for October
I'm thinking of signing up and raising a bit of money.
Anybody fancy having a go?

I can do that over birthday and Christmas. Easiest way to lose weight as well I've found. I've lost a stone in a month in the past just by not drinking alcohol.claretdj wrote:Feck that, you are meant to drink more not less!

I'm doing it again as I did it previously in 2016. It's not easy as mentioned above but it's worth it for such a great cause.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I've probably left it too late to raise any amount, so it'll end up me doing it to prove I can do it again. It'll be very interesting to see what sort of weight is lost though. Anything close to 12 pounds would be superb.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I would do it, however I've bought tickets for the Oktoberfest in York where I'll probably drink a months quota of beer in one day....... Would 1 day off be allowed?

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
Up to you SC. I can't see people donating for giving up alcohol, especially the lads I go out into Leeds with, so sacked that off and decided to donate to Pendleside if I can last. Some sort of incentive.
Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I've got too much going on in October, so thinking of having a go in November instead. Honestly don't think it will be that hard for me now, a few years ago I could never have done it!

I don't fancy my chances either. Life is so dull at the minute, that I feel like I have to drink. Without it, it might be slitted wrists time, but we'll see. I can try and see how things pan out.dougcollins wrote:Rocktober?

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
It doesn't help with watching rubbish like that does it Frank but I suppose it goes with the territory of being a claret for over 50 years !FactualFrank wrote:I don't fancy my chances either. Good luck with Alcohol free month if you attempt it, couldn't do it myself, always need a beer when home from work, and watching clarets.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
Why give it up. Moderation, excersie and healthy diet is the key. I have 3 days a week of maximum and have to earn my drink. For example I had a 6 mile walk to the pub yesterday and blasted 8 pints down, don't normally drink so much but got the taste
Re: Giving up alcohol for October
Eat less and exercise more to lose weight. Then you can enjoy a drink from time to time too.

8 pints of water? Then you're fineTop Claret wrote:For example I had a 6 mile walk to the pub yesterday and blasted 8 pints down
8 pints of lager? That's more calories than you'll have burned walking.
Inititally, it was to raise money for charity, but I've realised people just won't donate for this kind of thing, so I'm doing it for myself. I know from experience as I lost knocking on a stone the last time I went a month without alcohol.
Another reason - helps with depression.
Re: Giving up alcohol for October
If you're regularly overweight best to make long term sustainable lifestyle adjustments rather just a quick temporary fix.

Cool. Doesn't apply to me.taio wrote:If you're regularly overweight best to make long term sustainable lifestyle adjustments rather just a quick temporary fix.
Re: Giving up alcohol for October
Then nothing wrong with easing off the alcohol for a short while. Thought you'd posted before about the need for you to lose weight that's all and if that'd have been the case only changes for the long term would work.FactualFrank wrote:Cool. Doesn't apply to me.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I bounce (quite literally) with weight, but I then go back to boxing and can lose it pretty quickly. But it's not just about weight. It helps with depression, so it's not just about calories. It helps your frame of mind. And at the same time, it's good for people who can raise a bit of money too. So losing weight is only a part of it.taio wrote:Then nothing wrong with easing off the alcohol for a short while. Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I remember a few months back Frank you mentioned your troubles regarding depression, hope you are in a better place now pal and good luck with your booze free October.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
Thanks. I just live with it now. It's not improved. I doubt it ever will. When I wake up in the morning, I immediately think of what's on TV the following evening to go back to bed and watch. Probably not the best thinking! haha.Aclaret wrote:I remember a few months back Frank you mentioned your troubles regarding depression, hope you are in a better place now pal and good luck with your booze free October.
But giving up alcohol is something I'm thinking might help. I'll try and help myself and see what happens.

I'll have a do, it's a good idea to give your liver a break, I'm ok on school nights usually cave in on a weekend if I can resist a thirsty Thursday.

Just don’t get the idea that someone would sponsor me to go for 31 days “dry” having regularly done 4-6 months stints without a drink.

Think it's more designed for people who drink regular & want to cut down in order to be healthier long term, if you can do a complete month abstaining you know you are in more complete control, other people may not agree that's my take on the idea.box_of_frogs wrote:Just don’t get the idea that someone would sponsor me to go for 31 days “dry” having regularly done 4-6 months stints without a drink.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I can't drink anyway as I've got Nodular regenerative hyperplasia of the liver because of my Myeloproliferative Neoplasm.
However, I do lots of parkruns and they are a great way to exercise:

This Saturday in Towneley park there will be pacemakers to give you an even pace.

Yep. I thought that was obvious to be fair, but clearly not to everybody.Jakubclaret wrote:Think it's more designed for people who drink regular & want to cut down in order to be healthier long term, if you can do a complete month abstaining you know you are in more complete control, other people may not agree that's my take on the idea.

How did you get on lads?
I've decided to knock it on the head for the Xmas period. I'm working Xmas day and boxing day so I want to enjoy the rest of it with the kids completely sober. Did any of you do the full month?

I've only had about 3 alcoholic drinks all year, all at Burnley games/away trips.BennyD wrote:Were you in a coma, or working in Saudi?
Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I had to give up alcohol four years ago due to medical reasons and haven't missed it one bit.
In fact, it's one of the best things I've ever done.

I like to do everything in moderation. No over indulging and no having to give up. Giving up for medical reasons is something entirely different.
Re: Giving up alcohol for October
Interestingly, the word 'moderation' seems to be used an awful lot. As soon as I ever mention to someone that I'm teetotal they always tell me they don't drink much either. I'd be a very rich man if I got a pound every time I'm told that.Blackrod wrote:I like to do everything in moderation. No over indulging and no having to give up. If that's the case then either people are lying or the medical profession has got it wrong in its assessment that people drink too much.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
What's moderate is very subjective. I know people that have two or three drinks every night and consider that moderate. Whereas I regularly go for two or three weeks without touching a drop, but then I'll have ten pints one Saturday and wake up with a horrendous hangover. I'd say moderate is drinking once or twice a week, but not to the extent that you're affected the following day.

Re: Giving up alcohol for October
I've cut down, but I haven't cut it out and to be honest, I don't think I want to. It's good to have a few beers over the weekend. I just don't have as many as I did until a few months ago. I plan to cut it down even further after Christmas. Moderate for me would still be around 20 units a week, which is around 9-10 pints. But for the last couple of weeks, I've been walking 5 miles most mornings. It's only 90 minutes of the start of my day and even with 10 pints, I'm losing weight.

If what ever your doing is doing you no good then it’s only sensible to either cut down or stop doing it.
Fortunately I have managed to escape such scenarios so quiet happy to continue to live more for today with the philosophy of enjoying now without loosing the balance of course.
