White swan fence
Just won a Michelin star!
Great place if you get the chance to visit, and on the doorstep.
Can’t think of many places serving food of that quality that doesn’t break the bank. Hopefully they don’t move the price up too much from the 3 course for under £30.

Wow, grew up just round the corner from the White Swan 40 years ago. Landlord was a nasty piece of work back then. Eventually got to drinking age and he’d never let us in. How times change

Re: White swan fence
Good to hear. Heard it had one or was due to get one.
Went a few years ago and assumed it was just a pub and was very impressed with the food then, without knowing it had such a reputation.
Went in on NYE Last year when walking from Barley, round Pendle into Barrowford and back. Stopping off at every pub for a beer. The White Swan was closed as they were decorating for NYE. However they opened up for just the two us, served us a good few beers and snacks and were genuine, nice people. Cant recommend it highly enough and will be back again soon for sure.

I took the Mrs for a quick lunch one Friday & ended up with the 3 courses. On first look I almost decided to try somewhere else as I didn’t really fancy anything on the short menu, glad I stayed and tried some new dishes as it was really good. £70 for what was supposed to be a quick lunch wasn’t cheap but I couldn’t argue as the quality was greatIndecisive wrote:Just won a Michelin star!

The significance of the award cannot be understated.
City Centre Manchester has not had a single starred restaurant for 40 years.
The last time a restaurant had a star anywhere in the whole of Greater Manchester was 2009 when The Juniper in Altrincham lost it's award .

I'd be happy to pull you a pint on Christmas day and I'd do so with a smile and wish you the very best seasons greetings whilst doing so.
It's a wonderful time to be serving folk, chatting and have a good time.

Only place I can remember getting a Michelin star anywhere close to here was in Ilkley across the border. It was called The Box Tree restaurant.
At one time years ago it had two Michelin Stars, just googled and the place is still in business with one Michelin Star.

Tough industry is running restaurants. Very few are ripping people off... most are are making a modest living at the end of it. If you want to serve complex creative dishes using top quality ingredients, the costs are high. I get not everyone either appreciates or enjoys that kind of food. That’s absolutely fine. It’s not worth it...to you. Others can take great enjoyment in spending 2 or 3 hours in a great restaurant. Maybe as much enjoyment as another person would get from a few hours at the turf...where 2 tickets aren’t far off £70....

I like the mucky duck/white swan and the young chef has worked his way up from another very close restaurant- fair play to him. It has been good value over the years, which might now increase slightly. The Enclosure wrote:Only place I can remember getting a Michelin star anywhere close to here was in Ilkley across the border. It was called The Box Tree restaurant.

I have eaten at the Box Tree a couple of time, they also catered for our wedding, but I think I prefer the atmosphere in a normal pub like the White Swan.

Yep, Gerald was a funny bugger. went in a few times, sometimes he just point blank refused to serve customers if he didn't like the look of you.Cirrus_Minor wrote:I remember he had a bit of a nasty streak and played up to it s bit.
Once remember popping in the early 90`s with three friends as we were passing and as i was driving. I ordered a soft drink whilst my mates all ordered pints, he served them and Gerald refused to serve me. He said pubs are for drinking beer in, I told him i was driving, he just said so!
As for how it is now, not been in quite while for even though I live close by, but have friends who go often and all like the quality of the food. I believe the chef / co owner trained at Northcote Manor.
Got to say, it is great accolade for the chef and the pub, well done!

I 'grew up' in the Swan though, on the Pendle Witch, and Gerald and Viv were always great hosts and good for a lock in. Remember him doing Stew and Hard for about a quid, and he'd do a rib of beef for the old lads but always told incomers he didn't do food. And he kicked out my mates when I brought them back from university and one of them ordered a tequila slammer
Different times etc.
And back to the present - I live a long way away now but a couple of times a year get up there for lunch and been really impressed.
Well deserved IMO but I can't imagine what Gerry would think!

Re: White swan fence
I can remember Gerald and he could be a funny bugger used to go quite a lot in the 80s, early 90s.
The stew and hard was wonderful, we went a lot for that, once went on a saturday night for bar meal and several pints ( he used to have about 11 or 12 beers and several largers he used to got pick the barrels up himself rather than pay for delivery) with another couple I was on 50/50 driving with the wife (I drove there she drove back) we got there ordered our drinks and food but was told no food on tonight, so got the drinks and sat down deciding where to go for food. Gerald came over and said was the beer good we agreed and then he said I believe you wanted food, our reply was yes he said not doing food tonight, but asked what we would have ordered. Next news another round appeared in front of us and the bar maid said on the house, never ones to turn down a drink we accepted and started on them next she came out with cutlery and condiments and our food arrived. We tucked in to it and could here people going up asking for food and they kept getting refused. They all looked at us sat eating and said well they have, his reply was they are friends and I would not want them to eat in my lounge upstairs when they have come to see me , people just looked dum struck and if it had not been for the several pints we had drunk we may have felt uncomfortable but as it was good night out.

Northcote manner is emperors new coat IMHO and if you don't like some of the expensive weird and wonderful dishes its because you haven't got an educated palate. I now choose to do runners from far less formal eateries.

the french is the main contender for me. also where the light gets in in stockport is brilliant, funnily enough adam reid was at the next table when we ate there.
Re: White swan fence
I remember going in the ‘Mucky duck’ around 1985 when Gerry had it. I’d not been in before and so being hungry asked if they did food. He gave me the dirtiest of looks and looked as if I whe was going to chuck me out! “Pie and peas” was all He said. Take it or leave it, I took it, being a lunch time, and it was lovely, but service with a smile, Er, no. It was a proper pub then. He was proud of his beer and had a great choose of ales. Non of this fancy stuff. How times have changed. Well done to them.

Thoroughly deserved and not just for the food. The staff there are all brilliant. We had our wedding reception there earlier in the year and it was the best meal of my life. Everyone was stunned at the quality they produced, for 36 people, at once.
When the 2nd course came out (Guinea fowl ravioli with mushroom and cep sauce and crispy onions) the place fell silent. Everyone just looking around saying "wow". A never forget moment.
Hopefully doesn't attract too many star struck tourists so that locals can still get in.
As for Wile E coyotes comment, proper bell end. Stick to Sycamore farm.

Moor hall is phenomenal.
A one off trip for me though. Unfortunately don’t have the penny’s for that kind of dining. Anyone with a love for that kind of food will see it as value for money though. I felt it was better than l’enclume.
White Swan though is very accessible price wise. Manager there is a great host, as down to earth and unpretentious as you could possibly hope for. Cheese board is absolutely A1.
Haven’t done wtlgi or the French, but fancy both. Also umezushi (sp?). Anyone been there?
