sad thing is in a few years these are the sort of idiots who infect society with all their ridiculous policies and ideas
Re: Clapping Banned at University
So, in the interest of making things better for the disabled, they are introducing a policy whose main effect is to exclude blind people? Clever lot, these students.

Why don't they ban driving, walking, talking, singing, dancing and swimming as they are not accessible to all. Absolute berks.

"The union say the loud noise created by clapping, including whooping and traditional applause, can pose an issue for students with disabilities such as anxiety or sensory issues."
Fair enough I say, I CAN'T stand all this whooping, when or how did this start? I have never whooped.

Re: Clapping Banned at University
the MEN using a clickbait headline for a perfectly reasonable story? well i never...
Re: Clapping Banned at University
Are people without hands allowed to whoop and cheer? How does their right to cheer clash with the right of frightened people not to hear any cheering?
They could perhaps introduce a multi-sensory touchscreen on which students could register their feelings, silently and invisibly, so students with various disabilities could watch or listen to (via earphones, of course) their screen which would record expressions of approval without anyone actually moving or making a noise.

Re: Clapping Banned at University
The students might be better concentrating on studying and making themselves suitable for work when they have finished their courses. This is another idiotic ban.
No doubt it will be suggested for football matches soon. No clapping allowed. Then no cheering as it will upset someone for sure.

Mate, I haven't read it. Why should I? its just students being students.
I'm just loving the reactions to the headline.
To be fair, its stayingups that pushed me over the edge! (I'm still chucking about it now)

its essentially about accessibility for deaf students so i'm not sure earphones would work.dsr wrote:Are people without hands allowed to whoop and cheer? How does their right to cheer clash with the right of frightened people not to hear any cheering?

given the events it mainly applies to are debates, panels and talks, there's unlikely to be anything too raucous occurring anyway.
a outright ban on clapping at a university would be absurd but adopting a more inclusive and accessible approach for certain events really isn't.

Re: Clapping Banned at University
I'm with Lancaster here, just a bunch of tax dodgers doing what they have done throughout history, going completely over the top, then sitting down in the SU bar feeling all smug about it. I remember when I was at University in Newcastle the student's Union spent a whole week agonising over whether to allow a speaker from the National Front. In the end he was allowed to speak but nobody turned up to hear him. A much better response I feel than No Platform.

Biggest thing I can remember the SU doing though was inviting the Wurzels to do the end of season thing.

Multi-sensory. Deaf people could watch the screen, blind people could listen to it, and people frightened of loud noises wouldn't have to suffer.quoonbeatz wrote:its essentially about accessibility for deaf students so i'm not sure earphones would work.

Even if it means banning what is, a normal human physical expression of joy or approval. Recognised the world over since time immemorial.
They should drink more and being having more casual sex.

Re: Clapping Banned at University
They are trying to show they welcome diversity by not offending any particular group. They havnt considered all minority groups and won't do anything where they have to make sacrifices. If they did away with all public and music events and all the Union bars people who were agoraphobic would not feel excluded. In fact they should ban teaching classes and just plug in earphones at home remotely.

Lancaster and Quoon being very smug here I think. Look at us two, understanding some of the excellent reasons behind the ban.quoonbeatz wrote:its essentially about accessibility for deaf students so i'm not sure earphones would work.

The rest of us in our own way are only commenting that it is a bit daft, but no, we are not on your intellectual, ex Newcastle University level. Never mind eh? Most on here never had a chance to go to uni. If they had been lucky enough to go, I bet they wouldn't have wasted their time on this sort of s***t*! They might have actually studied and worked.

It's the sheer counter-productive stupidity of oh-so-earnest people who are supposedly intelligent and have no apparent power of rational thought. It's an NUS policy, too - it's not just a handful of dimwits at the regular meeting.Lancasterclaret wrote:Chip, nothing about being smug, its just about realising that its just students doing what students do. One of the Bristol universities did something as stupid last year - they made the operatic society cancel the show Aida, because there weren't enough black people to play slaves. For years and years, black people have been trying to get their foot in the door that skin colour needn't matter in stage productions; and then along come Bristol students to declare that playing the "wrong" colour amounts to cultural appropriation and should be stopped.
