Would a Vpn not get around the issue.
Re: Data at university

On the rare occasion I've used a VPN I used tunnel bear but limited data for free.

Depending on whether you get data through your phone contract, you could set up a mobile hotspot on your smartphone. Otherwise, it will probably have to be a VPN although I'd be careful when on the university network. Blocking youtube is harsh btw!

I always find this kind of thing counterproductive. Yes you can **** your day away on YouTube but there's also Incredible knowledge to be gained from it.HieronymousBoschHobs wrote:Depending on whether you get data through your phone contract, you could set up a mobile hotspot on your smartphone. Like when a manager sees me on my phone and thinks I'm texting but I'm really looking up the correct way to make a triple ristretto latte con panne with a Madagascar cinnamon topping.

Look at giffgaff they do data deals without any contract. Might be worth getting a cheap tablet that accepts a SIM card.

Re: Data at university
I would not recommend using any mobile data for Youtube usage, you couldn't burn data any faster than watching online video.
Best option would be a VPN as already mentioned, you can trial different ones to see if they work as the university may well block certain ones if it already blocks Youtube.

Re: Data at university
As someone who works in a Uni IT Dept, my advice is to go and speak nicely to the IT service desk and explain what you want to be able to to, and check whether they have any preferred VPN providers for you to utilise. Be nice to them, most IT support staff will assist if you're nice to them and if anyone knows how to circumvent eduroam on their connection it will be them.

£25 a month on giffgaff for unlimited minutes/texts/data (it does go a little slower after a certain amount but never had a problem) - it’s an expensive trade off but if someone didn’t mind switching sims then it’s a great deal without being tied into a contract.superdimitri wrote:I would not recommend using any mobile data for Youtube usage, you couldn't burn data any faster than watching online video.

Most Unis are signed up to the Box Of Broadcasts service which should be available to students. Full terrestrial Freeeview service and recording and editing facils. It’s part of the BUFVC.

Re: Data at university
That's pretty steep considering you can get a VPN for next to nothing! But yeah, if you pay already some money for a phone maybe this is a good option.bfccrazy wrote:£25 a month on giffgaff for unlimited minutes/texts/data (it does go a little slower after a certain amount but never had a problem) - it’s an expensive trade off but if someone didn’t mind switching sims then it’s a great deal without being tied into a contract.

Re: Data at university
That’s how I meant it - if you don’t want to be tied into a contract and already pay 15/20 a month for your package then adding £5/10 and knowing you’ll never have the problem of being blocked or running out could suit people.superdimitri wrote:That's pretty steep considering you can get a VPN for next to nothing!
