Villa need to be wary that they don’t become the next Leeds Utd. They could face a decade or so in the relative wilderness, if they’re not careful.

Re: Steve Bruce
Ive seen the story on Skysports, attributable to the old "Sky sources". Not a great surprise but it's not immediately clear who they'll be able to get as a more able replacement.
Bookies will be opening books shortly (if not already done so).

Re: Steve Bruce
Incredible end to last night's game v Preston. 3-2 up v. 10 men and Villa scrambled an equaliser before getting a penalty right at the 'death'. Whelan,of all people,took it and it was easily saved. Apparently he has only scored one goal in the last seven years. Wonder if the decision to sack him had already been made or if that penalty had been scored it might have bought him just a little more time?

Re: Steve Bruce
Local Brum press report that Thierry Henry is the early favourite @ 5/2;
BFS 2nd favorite 3/1;
Mick McCarthy in at 6/1 with Dean Smith (who he?);
Alan Pardew 8/1 (surely people aren't still flogging this dead horse);
N Pearson 10/1; Carlos Carvalhal 10/1 etc.
Interesting to see who they get and how they do.

Dean Smith is manager at Brentford who play some excellent football. Seem to have a high turnover of staff in the close season but always manage to maintain a very good standard of football.

That team on paper, is way under performing for the championship. I've nothing against Bruce, but something has to be wrong somewhere.
Similar scenario, different level, with Moanrihno at Man U.

Re: Steve Bruce
I don't think Dyche to Villa is that unrealistic. If their new owners were to offer him a fortune to spend, potential friction with our board,plus he must know he's never going to better our 7th place finish from last season? Not to mention how much better the location would be for him.

Re: Steve Bruce
Every now and then a job comes along which for some reason you have to feel might just grab SD's attention and this I'm guessing may well be one of them unfortunately. 90% of the jobs he's ever linked with he'd never ever look twice at given where he's taken us to, where the clubs in question are in terms of status and how much Burnley fits him just as much as he fits Burnley. BUT, a genuine giant like Villa, the challenge of getting them out the championship and where they could go after that, plenty of cash to spend, the location of the club and the fact that like many people he may well feel we peaked last season and it will be hard if not impossible to ever actually build on it, I feel might get him seriously thinking just for once.
Re: Steve Bruce
Villa have been linked with the agent Jorge Mendes to help them get players. If so, that completely rules out SD as he'll want TOTAL control of who he signs.Dark Cloud wrote:Every now and then a job comes along which for some reason you have to feel might just grab SD's attention and this I'm guessing may well be one of them unfortunately. 90% of the jobs he's ever linked with he'd never ever look twice at given where he's taken us to, where the clubs in question are in terms of status and how much Burnley fits him just as much as he fits Burnley. That's a good point as he definitely has full control at Burnley and tbh I get the feeling that that's something of a rarity these days, in the top two divisions at least.Spijed wrote:Villa have been linked with the agent Jorge Mendes to help them get players. Not a chance.
Its a backward move whatever way you look at it.
Bigger club? Yes. More fans? Of course. Richer owners - seems so. But its still a backward step. What would it say of him if he decided to leave a top flight club, who consistently punch above their weight and finished 7th in the richest league in the world last season for one who is in middtable in the league below and have just sacked a manager who actually has an even better record at that level and has managed at this level for many more years too!
Villa could come up. Could do well. But equally they could easily be the next Forest, Leeds, City (for many years), Sheffield Wednesday etc etc etc
If he was to go it would never be to a league below while his stock is so high. Never.
Dyches eyes will only be on consistently improving. If he took such a gamble and failed his reputation would take a completely unnecessary battering.
Even if he succeeds it doesnt enhance his reputation that much. And Villa fans wont be patient with him.

Re: Steve Bruce
I can't see Dyche to Villa as much of a possibility. Various bookies odds are now developing (as per oddschecker table linked).
Dean Smith and Paulo Fonseca clear favourites;
Thierry Henry, John Terry, Brendan Rodgers as the others under 10/1.
BFS, Carlos Carvalhal, Sami Hypia upto 20/1.
About 15 others before Dyche comes into the reckoning.
That's realistic.
I might have a couple of bob on Carlos Carvalhal. I think he would be a good fit.

Re: Steve Bruce
If Dyche fancies it and his agent lets Villa know then it could be interesting.
Sometimes you have to take a step back to take a larger stride forward and it seems Villa are prepared to throw plenty at it. His credentials would certainly be a lot stronger than a carvahal or dean smith (though smith might have admirers from the job he did with Walsall too, on villas doorstep).

Dyche won’t go to villa. His throwback style might be enough to get them out of the championship but he’d soon be potted in the premier league serving up dycheball and only targeting players from the championship/West Brom.

Re: Steve Bruce
All absolutely true and fair enough I can't disagree with any of it, but I also feel there WILL come a time when SD looks for another, fresh challenge as most successful people in many and varied jobs do. He's been with us a while now (absolute eons in football manager terms!) and at some point he'll start thinking about taking on a new project and backing himself to succeed in it. I honestly hope to God it's not soon as he really is THE most crucial cog in our wheels, but from where I'm looking Villa could be a very interesting, tough for sure, but tasty challenge for the right chap.cricketfieldclarets wrote:Not a chance.

Villa's next manager will be one of super agent Jorge Mendes clients according to quite a few media sources today. Fonseca from Donetsk is the most likely apparently. I doubt Dyche will even be in the reckoning or even considered by Villa if the Mendes link as any substance.

Re: Steve Bruce
I'm struggling to think of an occasion where in an in-work manager of a top division club left to take up a job in the league below.
The Championship is full of 'big' clubs, or at least clubs who were relatively big at some point in their history. Villa are now in the third (?) out of four seasons worth of parachute payments and it doesn't look like this season is going to be any easier for them to get promoted than the previous two despite their expensively assembled squad.
SD has proved he can get a club out of the Championship and into he PL twice - really don't see going over the same ground, in a much riskier environment, fits the career path he has in mind.

Howard Wilkinson - the last English manager to win the top flight - did it twice.
He left Notts County to join Sheffield Wednesday in 1983, got them promoted and kept them there, then in 1988 dropped a division again to take over a lacklustre Leeds United side before getting them promoted as champions in 1989-90 - remarkably going on to win the league in 1992, the year before it became the Prem.

Unless it's about £20m a year for the next 10 years with no chance of being sacked I really can't see what they could offer that would make him leave us for Villa. Would potentially be career suicide.The Enclosure wrote:Villa may dangle a carrot at Sean.
